BLED

Bled is known for the glacial Lake Bled, which makes it a major tourist attraction. Perched on a rock overlooking the lake is the iconic Bled Castle. The town is also known in Slovenia for its vanilla and cream pastry (Slovene: kremšnita, kremna rezina).

Naturopath Arnold Rikli (1823–1906) from Switzerland contributed significantly to the development of Bled as a health resort in the second half of the 19th century. Due to its mild climate, Bled has been visited by aristocratic guests from all across the world.

Today it is an important convention center and tourist resort, offering a wide range of sports activities (golf, fishing, and horseback-riding). It is a starting point for mountain treks

and hikes, especially within nearby Triglav National Park.

A small island in the middle of the lake is home to Assumption of Mary Pilgrimage Church; visitors frequently ring its bell for good luck. Human traces from prehistory have been found on the island. Before the church was built, there was a temple consecrated to Živa, the Slavic goddess of love and fertility. One can get to the island on a traditional flat-bottomed wooden boat (Slovene: pletna).

The island on Lake Bled has 99 steps. A local tradition at weddings is for the husband to carry his new bride up these steps, during which the bride must remain silent.

The Lake was first mentioned in 1004 and we’re sure they marveled at its beauty just as we do today. To get acquainted, there is nothing better than to stretch your legs with a lazy walk around the lake. The length is 6km and can be done in a brisk hour or a lot longer for those who will want to linger and take up the numerous photographic opportunities! You could take PLETNA boat to island (left) or a easy walk to castle above the lake.

Visitors of Bled are inspired by its mild climate, fresh air, plentiful sunshine, clean water and tranquil serenity and charmed by the time-honored “PLETNA” boats that slowly glide across the lake. Horse-drawn carriages add to the town’s traditional flair.

Bled and its surrounding area, much of which falls within the Triglav National Park, ensure plentiful opportunities for spending an active day in the great outdoors, including golf on one of the most beautiful courses in Europe, white-water rafting, cycling and hiking. Recently, Bled’s ambitious and cosmopolitan chefs, who like to give new interpretations to the typical traditional dishes of the area, have managed to establish themselves among the very best in the country, thus adding to the pleasures of visiting Slovenia’s Alpine pearl.

About SloveniaDiscover the diversity of Europe in miniature

Legend has it that when he created the world, God had a little bit of everything special left over in his pouch. Not sure what to do with it, he took his bag and emptied it all over a small plot of land in central Europe that much later became known as Slovenia. This pocket-sized country in the heart of Europe truly is amazingly diverse. A short drive will take visitors from the high peaks, gushing rivers, crystal-clear lakes and verdant valleys of Slovenia’s Alps to the laid-back villages on the sunny Mediterranean coast. In between, the dazzling underworld, disappearing lakes and majestic Lipizzaner horses of the Karst await exploration, and wine-growing regions beckon guests to linger. In the very heart of the country lies its culture-loving capital Ljubljana, a city of beautiful architecture and a relaxed flair. The eastern part of Slovenia, in turn, is characterized by thermal springs, ancient castles and monasteries, historic towns and a rural lifestyle. This mosaic of landscapes enables visitors to enjoy the great green outdoors and urges you outside for action-packed adventures in the fresh air.

To top an unforgettable stay in Slovenia, there is excellent cuisine ranging from home-made local fare to contemporary gourmet dishes prepared by the best Slovene chefs, while best of all are Slovenia’s open and friendly people, who will do their utmost to make you feel genuinely welcome
