AMADEUS

If you like plays with elaborate costumes and an innovative set, don’t miss the Launceston Players’ production of Amadeus by Peter Shaffer – opening next week!

Amadeus is an award-winning play, made into a film which won 8 Academy Awards in 1984. Jeff Hockley directs this production which features an amazing set, designed and built by local professional designer, Darryl Rogers, with the indispensable Alan Gray. Sonja Hindrum, local exhibited textile artist, has designed and made countless exquisite period costumes with her dedicated sewing team.

So what’s it about? The play is based on the rumour that Mozart’s untimely death was due to murder. The story follows main character and rival composer Antonio Salieri (Ray Sangston), who, on his deathbed, recounts his jealousy of Mozart (Travis Hennessy) and how he killed him… or did he? Only the audience can be the judge.

Amadeus also features Tracey Ollington, new to Launceston, as Constanze (Mozart’s wife) as well as many actors well known to Encore audiences including Patsy Marshall, Dennis Man and Bonnie Harris. Even if you know nothing about Mozart or his music you will still enjoy the drama, comedy, backstabbing and wit of this remarkable play.
