Training will be provided to volunteers. Catholic Charities and AmeriCorps VISTA hope to launch the Welcome New Americans radio show, which will be recorded as a podcast and sent to community radio stations. The goal with this segment is to help refugees and immigrants in the Lexington community by providing a place to celebrate their culture through stories and music, build social capital through mainstream resource awareness, and promote public service announcements that will benefit the health and safety of the local migrant populations. We’re currently seeking interns and volunteers to help fulfill the communications and journalism aspects of the Welcome New Americans Project and its radio show. Interested volunteers should email Nina at [email protected]. Interns who are interested in assisting Catholic Charities in communications and journalism should email Ruslyn at [email protected]. We look forward to working with you to fulfill our mission to empower and assist individuals, families, and groups in the Diocese to improve their quality of life. At the 2015 World Day of Migrants and Refugees, Pope Francis said, “It is necessary to respond to the globalization of migration with the globalization of charity and cooperation, in such a way as to make the conditions for migrants more humane.” According to a 2010 report found at CIS.org, 43.6% of all immigrants in the U.S. are living in or near poverty. In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Catholic Charities strongly desires to do what it can to help migrants live with dignity. This impulse triggered the birth of the Welcome New Americans Project, which serves as a brand new partnership between Catholic Charities and AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America), a national service program designed to fight poverty. The Welcome New Americans Project seeks to develop the most efficient volunteer-based programs that will serve to help break the cycle of poverty within the migrant population of Lexington and surrounding areas. The program intends to empower refugees and immigrants to build social capital and greater self-sufficiency. The Welcome New Americans Project will be 100% sustained by volunteers and geared toward refugees who have already been through the 90-day resettlement process. The program plans to seek volunteers who will act as Transitional Case Managers, Medicaid Advocates, and 1-1 Tutors. The Transitional Case Managers will connect refugees to the necessary mainstream resources, while the Medicaid
