Guidance NotesA Progression Agreement is a formal arrangement between education providers. It spells out
what a learner needs to do to be considered for a place on a named programme of study.Progression Agreements may vary in the criteria they specify but they should always aim to
give students clear information about what is needed to progress into higher education. Thesenotes give you some ideas about how to go about developing and maintaining ProgressionAgreements.
Identifying a progression route and developing the Progression Agreement
• Use course information provided on The Creative Way website to identify potential
progression pathways (www.creativeway.org.uk)
• Develop contacts with relevant providers to gain an understanding of course content, structure, facilities and resources and learning and teaching methods.
• Identify any adjustments which might be needed to enable students to progress from
one course to another (eg to curriculum content) and where relevant, consider anyadditional measures which will enhance successful progression (eg audition or portfolioguidance, campus visits).
• Identify the criteria for progression from one course to another. This involves
identifying the level of attainment students will be required to demonstrate for aguarantee of interview and/or place. Knowing about the curriculum content of the “provider” course should enable HE staff to assess the extent to which it preparesstudents for the HE course and hence enable progression criteria to be identified.
• Once progression criteria have been identified, the progression route can beformalised in a Progression Agreement.
Progression criteria and pre-application guidance and support for students
In addition to the successful completion of the provider course, progression criteria mightinclude, for example:
• Portfolio, audition or other evidence of skills and competencies. It helps students if HEcourses are able to provide clear information about what they are looking for. It alsohelps if pre-application guidance and support is available – eg, audition workshops, portfolio clinics, campus visits etc.
• Evidence of achievement / attainment other than a formal qualification. This isnormally expressed through provision for AP(E)L.
• You will want to make sure that staff and students know about opportunities on offer
via the Progression Agreement – make sure you contact The Creative Way with details
of Progression Agreements you would like to be shown on The Creative Way website.
• You will also need to ensure you have a system in place to ensure that students knowhow to indicate that they are applying through a Progression Agreement and that thisis recognised in the applications process. You should also ensure that students knowhow to get feedback if their application through a Progression Agreement isunsuccessful.
