Finding and Using Downloading Tools

Found public domain content on sites like You Tube that you like?

Many schools/districts block You Tube and the ability for teachers to access downloading tools to install on their school computers. This is for good reason and is a best practice.

However, you can use your home computer to access free public domain content on sites like You Tube as well as tools that will allow you to download the free content for use in putting on a flash drive (USB drive) and using on your school’s computer.

I have found several tools and techniques for downloading free, public domain content that work nicely. This Cue Card has information for each tool/technique with complete directions.

Please note: New Dimension Media takes copyright infringement seriously and does not condone or encourage pirating of licensed content of any kind.

Using KeepVid

KeepVid is found at www.keepvid.com

1. KeepVid is an online tool and doesn’t require any downloading of a client to use.2. KeepVid works nicely on PC computers and with older MAC OS systems.3. Since I’ve upgraded to Lion OS System on my MAC, KeepVid no longer works. I now

use 4K Video Downloader on my updated MAC system. Directions for this tool are found on slide 4 of this presentation.

4. For KeepVid, copy the URL of the video you want to download. Go to KeepVid.com and you’ll see a screen that looks like this:

5. Paste the URL of the video you want to download in this field and select download button. It will take a few seconds. The results will be displayed below the window in a variety of file formats. Right click on the format you want (preferably MPG4) and save to your computer or flash drive. Voilà! You are ready to go to school and use your video.

Using 4K Video Downloader

4K Video Downloader is found at www.4kdownload.com.

1. 4K Video Downloader does require you to install their client on your computer. 2. It is cross platform and so it works great on PC and MAC. There directions for

downloading the client are easy and straightforward. 3. Once you have downloaded the 4K Video Downloader client, you can begin to

download videos. Copy the URL of the video you want to download.

4. Open 4K Video Downloader. 5. Simply select the Paste URL button located at the top left side of your screen and it automatically pastes the url for you. In a matter of seconds, your download is available in the window. 6. Right click to save and save to your desktop or whatever you store your video content. Put on your flash drive to use this video at school.

Using You Tube Directly

You Tube Technique (Trick:)

1. You Tube does have its own downloader.

2. It takes longer than the other two tools I’ve just shared, but is good when you don’t want to download a client or use a third party tool.

3. Simply find a video on You Tube you want to download and type the word “keep” in front of you tube in the address. An example is shown to the right.

4. Select enter after adding the word KEEP and you will be redirected as the video formats are being rendered.

Be Strategic Collecting Free Content

1. I have been collecting free, public domain content for years. I have a file system set up to keep the raw video files that I’ve downloaded over time.

2. My file names are pretty simple. I label with the strategy or purpose with which I want to use the videos. Some examples of my file names are shown below:
