Joanna D. Underwood

Founder and Chair, Energy Vision

Email: [email protected]

Joanna Underwood, one of the pioneers of this country's environmental movement, has launched and run two national environmental research organizations. The first,in l973, was INFORM, which documented the impacts of business practices on theenvironment and pubic health. Its research, published in more than 100 reports, influenced US public policy significantly by introducing the importance of strategieseliminating pollution and resource destruction at their source. This inspired thecountry’s first pollution prevention law (l990) and won for INFORM the USEnvironmental Protection Agency’s highest leadership award. In 2007

Underwood launched Energy Vision, concentrating on ways to make the most rapidtransition to the renewable energy sources and carbon - free fuels needed for asustainable future. In comparing all available fuel options, EV found one of the mostpromising to be the first commercially viable sustainable fuel – a form of renewablenatural gas (RNG) made from organic wastes – clean, virtually carbon-free (and insome cases net carbon negative).

EV organized the first RNG workshop with the US Department of Energy for itsClean Cities affiliates in 2010, and has since then sponsored day-long “Power ofWaste” Workshops in ten regions of the country. EV has published severalgroundbreaking reports on the waste-to-fuel strategy including the first step by stepguide for communities on how to explore beneficial uses of their organic wastes.Underwood was invited in 2015 by the US EPA to introduce this strategy intoTunisia and will host a workshop in Johannesburg South Africa later this year.

Ms. Underwood has spoken widely on sustainability issues. She has served on manyboards ranging from the Rocky Mountain Institute to the New York State EnergyResearch and Development Authority and the President’s Council on SustainableDevelopment under the Clinton Administration. Among awards that she hasreceived was being named one of the 100 top global sustainability leaders by EarthTimes in 2000 and 2002 and a lifetime achievement award in 2015 for her role inenergy innovation from the Natural Gas Vehicle Association.

Ms. Underwood received her BA from Bryn Mawr College in 1962 and an honoraryPhD in Science from Wheaton College in 1992.
