often play together and

share some of the same

hobbies, including reading,

dancing and swimming.

During the week, Kaylee

attends CCD classes. Twice

a week, she attends tap

and ballet classes, which

she began last year. She’s

really looking forward to

her first recital this spring.

In May (her birthday

month), Kaylee will play

baseball for the Miracle

League. She’s so excited

about it! In fact, she had a

chance to meet some

Pittsburgh Pirates team

members, who helped raise

money to build the field.

She has even appeared on

Fox Sports Network and

local news websites to

support the league.

Like a lot of young girls,

Kaylee loves the Disney

princesses and enjoys

watching each of their

movies. As for her favorites,

she rates the princesses in

this order: 1) Cinderella 2)

Sleeping Beauty and 3)

Snow White. She likes the

Disney movie, “Camp Rock”

(Mitzi’s her favorite

performer), and she

watches Disney shows,

“Zack and Cody” as well as

“Hannah Montana.” Plus

she tunes in to a variety of

shows on Animal Planet.

Kaylee is quite a tech-

savvy kid. She has a laptop

and likes to go to the

Webkinz and Pogo Internet

sites to play games. She

frequents the Noggin, High

School Musical and Disney

sites as well. Kaylee also has

a Nintendo DS text

messenger. Her

neighborhood friend,

Mallory, has one too, and

they have fun playing

games and chatting with

each other.

Kaylee has Apert

syndrome and has had four

surgeries so far, with none

planned in the near future.

Doctors are checking her

development and will make

decisions on what kind of

surgeries or procedures she

needs when she gets older.

She went to last year’s

CCA retreat in Myrtle

Beach, SC, and had a blast!

She made new friends and

has kept up with them

through letters. Kaylee may

go to this year’s retreat in

Grapevine, TX. Hopefully

she’ll catch up with her

friends there and will, no

doubt, make new ones,

too.

eight-year-old KayleeSantiago is a third

who loves being with her

family, going to school,

making friends and

enjoying life. She’s also very

caring of others and willing

to help whenever she can.

Maybe that’s why she

wants to be a nurse when

she grows up.

At school, Kaylee has lots

of friends and likes going to

her reading and swimming

classes. She’s really into the

Junie B. Jones series of

books and reads them at

home and at school.

Purple is her favorite

wears a lot of purple

Kaylee has a sister,

Craniofrontonasal Dysplasiasyndrome. (Say that 10times fast.)At seven months old, she

had surgery to release herright coronal suture andalso had her right orbitadvanced two centimeters. One of the hardest thingsfor parents to do is tohand over their precious, innocent child to theanesthesiologist rightbefore surgery, knowingyour baby will never lookthe same again. She came out more

swollen than we ever couldhave imagined. She wasalso overdosed onmorphine in the PICU andhad a code blue momentin her daddy’s arms. I thinkthat was our scariestmoment thus far. After thefirst few scary days, hereyes were swollen shut fora total of seven days! Shewas miserable!Four days after her

discharge, she wasreadmitted for meningitisand bacteremia. She hadto have a PICC line for sixweeks at home, which shetried to pull out along withher feeding tube. She justwanted to be free!I finally found CCA after

Lily’s first surgery. What agreat support and networkthey have. I only wish I hadfound them earlier.Lily has also had eye-

muscle repair on her eyes, and tubes placed in herears, as well as having hertonsils and adenoidsremoved. The next stage ofsurgery is to bring herorbits closer together and

build a bridge to her nose. This will be at age four, andDr. Morales told us it is oneof the hardest craniofacialsurgeries you can have. Weare very nervous already.Through all of this Lily

has continued to touch thehearts of nearly everyoneshe meets. She is verysocial and loves to talk toanyone and everyone. Lilyis also very smart and has agreat memory! She is the pride and joy

of our family. With just oneconversation or hug fromher you can feel herbeautiful, strong spiritshining through. Lily hasour family and entireneighborhood all wrappedaround her little finger. Herbig blue eyes and beautifulblond, curly hair attractspeople everywhere we go.She says “hi” to all the

“grandmas and grandpas”at the grocery store. Theylove it. She has a tenderheart for the elderly andalways wants to come tothe hospital with me whenI work so she can see thepatients. She also loves to “clean”

her teeth and checked mybraces when I had them.At the tender age of two,she already aspires to be adentist.

She has known herABC’s since she was 18months old and learnedthe Pledge of Allegiance acouple months ago. Lilyenjoys going to pre-schooland her gymnastics class.Other moms tell me that alltheir kids talk about isplaying with Lily at school.

princess of the house andexpects to be treated assuch. She has been aspecial kid from the get-go, and we couldn’timagine not having thisadventurous addition toour wonderful family. Before Lily was born, we

knew she had a feistypersonality. In the womb, she strongly protested toimpingements of her“space,” food and loudnoises. However, weweren’t prepared forexactly how “feisty” thislittle girl could be.The day she was born,

the pediatrician told us shehad some kind of asyndrome and that shewould likely have kidneyand heart problems. Wewere shocked. We justthought she had spent toomuch time in the birthcanal and then having touse suction to get her out,she had a large hematomaon her head. Now we understand why

her birth was so difficult:Her right coronal suturewas fused, and her headwouldn’t collapse to comeout. We were lucky shewas so small, or we wouldhave had an emergency

C-section, according to thedoctors. We didn’t know what to

do or where to turn forsupport. (I hadn’t foundCCA at this point.). Weshed many tears notknowing if our sweet babygirl would be ok and notknowing what her futuremight hold. They told us her heart

and kidneys were fine butthat she was missing partof her brain (the corpuscollosum), and she hadsome kind of syndrome thatincluded craniosynostosis. The corpus collosum is astructure in the center ofthe brain that houses morethan 250 million nerve cellsand does most of thecommunication betweenthe right and left brain. The doctors told us that

the degree ofdevelopmental delay isvariable and depends onthe individual. It couldrange from none to severe. One doctor told us thatRain Man had the samediagnosis. This only addedto our frustration becausewe didn’t really have anyreal answers yet. I askedwhat I could do to stimulatemore communicationpathways and they saidnothing. I tried anyway. Idid all I could think of tostimulate her brain. I triedmusic, dance, touch, massage, reading, exercisesand a whole lot of love.

We didn’t have adefinitive diagnosis untilshe was six months old.

That’s when Dr. Moralestold us that Lily has

who chose to donate to Children’s Craniofacial

Association in memory of George E. Shephard, who

passed away in September and at 86, was a father of five,

grandfather of 12 and great-grandfather of 16. One of

George's granddaughters is Angela Cronin, a devoted

CCA volunteer and mom to 3½ year-old Megan, who was

born with a craniofacial condition.

Angela recounted for us how her grandfather always put

family first. He was there when Megan was born and two

years ago, at 84 years old, traveled over five hours with

them for one of her surgeries, sat through the eight-hour

ordeal with the family, and was there to comfort Megan

when she woke up. The entire family has followed his lead

Fundraising in Honor of Quentin ZaengleI’m Bridget Cardell and I

currently attend Mount SaintJoseph Academy inPennsylvania. This year Ienrolled in a class called SeniorSeminar, where the studentsbecome active in a cause ororganization. For my project, I was an

activist for Children’sCraniofacial Association. Ibecame interested in thisorganization because I have afamily friend, Quentin

Zaengle, who has Apert syndrome. After hearing of thework CCA does to help children with craniofacialdifferences, I immediately wanted to become involved.

I organized a social awareness event and fundraiser atBorders Bookstore in Montgomeryville, PA, last December. My friends, volunteers and I wrapped gifts for free whilealso passing out pamphlets I created with moreinformation on facial disfigurement.Because of everyone’s generosity, I raised $165 for

CCA in Quentin’s honor. I hope my project spread moreawareness for this cause, so that CCA’s vision of “a worldwhere all people are accepted for who they are, not howthey look,” can come true.

Arbonne Hostess GivingFor the second year, CCA mom Cheryl Swearingen,

In additionto the wonderful holiday music, we had a very successfulraffle and enjoyed coffee and cookies from Something’sBrewing in Greenwich, NY. I would like to extend aspecial thank you to my sister Jessica Schwerd for herhelp in planning the event. Along with all of our familyand friends, the event could not have happened withoutcharitable donations from the community, including JaneSchwerd, Mae Communications, G. LaneConstruction, Country Power Products, Linda Corazzaand Barb Sartell.

See our burstingthermometer! Yourefforts helped surpassthe family/friendsfundraising goal!

cCA’s family fundraising goal

for 2008 was $100,000. By

the end of the first quarter our

families had raised almost

$13,500. By the end of the second

quarter you had raised more than

$37,500. At the end of the 3rd

quarter, families pushed the totals

up to more than $88,000! At year

end you had raised around

$147,000! Thanks so much for all

you do!

Special thanks go to families

who sent donations for the

holidays in lieu of exchanging

gifts, and to all who responded to

our annual fund appeal. We

appreciate those who gave in any

way throughout the year as well as

everyone mentioned here. All of

you brought CCA to a successful

close for 2008!

was born with Goldenhar syndrome, is also a third-gradeteacher at Lincoln Heights Elementary in Greenville,Michigan. Her students and former students were touchedby CCA’s cause and Marcum’s resolve to spread awarenessthat “Beyond the face is a heart.” Her class involved theentire student body and together they were widening thecircle of acceptance and helping to support CCA with apenny drive that alone raised almost $1,000. The number of pro-bonoservices CCA has receivedhas been, and continues tobe, invaluable. There have been so many

individuals and groupswilling to give theirexpertise to make it possiblefor CCA to use financialresources in the mostefficient manner. And therehave been so manyindividuals willing to give oftheir valuable time tovolunteer at CCA’s office. We’ve also seen countlesspeople at events, spreadingawareness across thecountry. And we’ve had somany dedicated donorsrecognizing the value inthese programs that changethe lives of the individualsand families we serve.CCA is literally the

product of each andevery one of theseindividuals. There areentirely too many to listhere, but as you read thisyou know who you are,and please know how

much we appreciate everysingle thing you do!Although we wish there

weren’t a need for CCA toexist, there is, so we’reglad we have been able toserve families affected byfacial differences for thepast 20 years. Thousandsof families have taken andcontinue to take activeroles in ensuring thedelivery of programs andservices.Today, our families are

involved in every facet ofthe organization. Somefamilies are active inspreading awarenessthroughout the countrythrough the NationalAwareness Program. Someoffer emotional support toother families in need of ashoulder on which to leanor just someone to talkwith through the FamilyNetworking and InternetSupport Programs. Othersfind their niches infundraising. Yet all areenthusiastic about their

roles and all are vital to theeffectiveness of CCA andits mission.Over the past 20 years,

the economy has ebbedand waned, and so havethe resources available tononprofits. Through all ofthe good times anddifficult times, CCA hasmanaged to “be there”when a family was in needof support.Did we have lean years?

You bet. But because ofthe dedication of boardmembers, volunteers, ourfamilies and the support ofthe community, wesurvived and thrived. Therewere times when CCArelied on the donation ofpro-bono goods andservices and even thedonation of office suppliesto keep the doors open —even when “the doors”were to my garage. Butkeep them open we did,and as a result of thededication of generousvolunteers and donors,CCA has “been there” tosupport individuals andfamilies affected by facialdifferences for 20 years. We’ve “been there”providing emotionalsupport, educationalmaterials and information, financial assistance, publicawareness and acceptance, advocacy and much more.Through fiscal

responsibility, CCA hasbeen able to ensureadequate financialresources necessary todeliver current programs

and services. Throughresponsible stewardship wehave been able to build amodest reserve, ensuringthese important programsand services won’t goaway during a downturn inthe economy.CCA periodically surveys

our families to be sure weare serving our communityin the most effectivemanner. Our programs andservices are a directreflection of these surveys. As a result, we areproviding programs that, regardless of the effort, expertise and resourcesrequired, are mostimportant to the membersof the community weserve. These programsmake a positive impact onthe lives of theseindividuals and families —programs that helpaffected individuals andfamily members livehappier, more productivelives. So, as we begin our

twentieth year of service, the hard work anddedication of individuals, families, volunteers, donorsand staff have collectivelybrought CCA — thepremier craniofacial familysupport organization —this far and will take theorganization well into thefuture.

special thanks to C.R. Conant, Josh

Hurst, and Rod Zuniga, our friends at

Dallas-based Liquid Logixx Studios

(liquidlogixx.com), and composer Mark

Menza (menzamusic.com), whose

combined artistic expertise in design and

production of a 30-second-spot PSA about

Children’s Craniofacial Association, made

for an in-kind donation to save CCA tens

of thousands of dollars in prohibitive costs

(i.e., we could never have done this

without them!) The piece is duplicated for

national distribution! See it soon!
