COURSE CHOICE

A pupil’s choice of course requires careful consideration. What they choose depends on: their abilities their previous performance their plans for the future

1 What should pupils think about before making their choices? their ability within subjects whether a subject is necessary or useful for entry into Further or Higher Education or for

their future career their willingness to make the effort that will be required for a few hours homework every

night the need to choose a range of subjects particularly if they are unsure about their future

career their interest and enjoyment in a subject time managing their priorities

2 Who can help pupils make their choices? their Pupil Care and Support teacher their subject teachers including Principal Teachers the Careers Adviser their parents

3 What conditions are placed upon their choices?

Fifth year pupils are expected to have a full time-table consisting of 5 subjects, Core PE, Core RME and Lifeskills. If appropriate two short courses can be chosen to count as one subject choice. All pupils are encouraged to choose their strongest subjects leading to the best chance of achievement.

Sixth year pupils are expected to choose 4 subjects. If choosing Psychology or Sociology then this must be chosen initially as a reserve. They can also choose two short courses to count as one subject choice. If choosing more National 5 qualifications then 5 subjects must be chosen.

Sixth year pupils can choose to study Psychology or Sociology one evening each week at Angus College. Both courses require at least one A-C pass at Higher in S5 and places are subject to availability.

NB Pupils must indicate four in-school choices when choosing a college subject as entry to the college course is not guaranteed until examination results are received in August. The number of options for college are limited to ONE choice.

Each year we offer study at Advanced Higher in a number of subjects. This is dependent upon a suitable pass at Higher and the availability of staff.

RETURN OF THE COURSE CHOICE REQUEST FORM

Information about the form and how to complete it will be given at a special Assembly. The copy of the course choice request form must be completed and returned at your options interview. At the interview your Pupil Care & Support Teacher will review and discuss the choices with you.

Any changes made at this time will be noted on the course choice form and parents/carers will be notified.

Once pupil choices have been collated they are entered into the course choice database and a draft column structure is devised.

From this structure, oversubscription, subject clashes and non-viable classes are identified.

Pupils whose choices cannot be accommodated within our staffing and resources complement will be re-interviewed in order to review their choices.

Pupils who wish to do a course at college or the SQA volunteering should choose this as an extra subject.

Pupils should choose a reserve subject and if there are any timetable clashes then this would help with the next discussion of choices.

universe. From the sources of the power we use, to the exploration of space, it covers a range of applications of the relationships that have been discovered through experiment and calculation, including those used in modern technology. Advances in physics mean that our view of what is possible is continually being updated. This Course allows learners to understand the processes behind scientific advances, and to appreciate and contribute to topical scientific debate.

The Course has three Units:

Electricity and Energy: covers the key areas of generation of electricity, electrical power, electromagnetism, practical electrical and electronic circuits, gas laws and the kinetic model.Waves and Radiation: covers the key areas wave characteristics, sound, electromagnetic spectrum and nuclear radiation.Dynamics and Space: covers the key areas of speed and acceleration, relationships between forces, motion and energy, satellites and cosmology.

Assessment

National 4 - requires the three units to be completed in addition to a “value added” research project. The assessment of pupils work during the National 4 course will be completed within the school.

National 5 - will have a final external exam and an externally marked assignment at the end of the session.

Homework

Pupils will be expected to have read over any notes they have made or been given the previous lesson. Homework exercises will be set regularly and these will be collected in, marked, and returned by the class teacher. For some parts of the course, pupils may be expected to write their own summary notes, or carry out a piece of research, at home, or to complete summary notes issued to them.

Progression

Success at National 4 could lead to studying National 5.Success at National 5 could lead to studying Higher Physics.

Physics (Higher)

The Higher Physics course consists of 3 Units:

Physics: Our Dynamic Universe (Higher)

This Unit looks at two broad areas: Dynamics and the Universe. Dynamics is all about motion and performance; cars, submarines, aircraft. The difference between energy and power – why do we use TNT to blow things up rather than an equal mass of chocolate chip cookies, which, kg for kg, contain far more energy? Is there a future for electric cars? Dynamics is linked to the Universe section by Newton’s Laws, applied to satellite motion which we still use when getting spacecraft into orbit. We go on to look at General and Special Relativity, Dark Energy and Dark Matter, the birth and death of the Universe.

Physics: Particles and Waves (Higher)

If Relativity is to do with physics on a massive scale, Quantum Theory is the world of the extremely small and is fundamental to much of the technology we use every day, such as mobiles and digital cameras. It is very different to the physics you will have encountered before. We look at particles like quarks, mesons, bosons etc. What exactly happens at CERN? Nuclear physics is covered, as well as the weird but fascinating nature of light. Physics: Electricity (Higher)

Electricity is mundane enough for us to not think twice about plugging in hair straighteners, and yet the same stuff is used as a gruesome form of execution in the States. Although the Unit is called Electricity you cannot really separate Electricity from Magnetism. Light itself is an electro-magnetic phenomenon; the colours of the rainbow are there because of electricity. Horses require electricity, because muscle contractions require electricity. Atoms, chemicals, molecules, all exist because of electricity. What are semi-conductors and what are integrated circuits? The aim is to make you see through the equations to understand the beauty of the concepts. Assessment

Each of the three Units will culminate with an end of unit test which must be passed, although will not count towards the final grade. The final Assessment of the course consists of a question paper which has 120 marks and a course assignment (a project) worth 30 marks.

Crime drama and documentaries are extremely popular: CSI, Mindhunters, Making of a Murderer, Killing Eve,

The Sinner, Wire in the Blood, Sherlock Holmes to name but a few.  But, what about real-life crime?

In reality, we need to understand how crime scenes are investigated and used to elicit essential evidence. We

look to theory and crime data to create a picture about the nature and extent of crime.  This course, takes three

SQA units and combines them to provide you with a balanced mix of theory, data analysis, and provides an

understanding of how physical and psychological evidence is gathered and used. These three units give you a

recognised National Progression Award (NPA) in Criminology
