COMPANY PROFILE

cc-tapis was created in 2011 by the traditional Persian house Maison Chamszadeh, founded in 1943 and well known in France for the quality of its handknotted rugs. The main headquarters are now in Milan, where a team of designers innovate through a new approach to traditional methods. Undyed raw materials, innovative weaving patterns and techniques are a key part of the process. All cc-tapis rugs are completely handknotted by expert Tibetan artisans in Nepal. A strong respect for materials and for the culture of this ancient craft is reflected in the company’s eco-friendly approach to every step of production, ranging from the hand spinning of the softest Himalayan wool to the use of purified rainwater for the washing of the final products, making each one of cc-tapis rugs unique. No chemicals, acids or

artificial fibres are ever used in the process.

Far from mass production, cc-tapis aims to offer a tailored service to those who understand and enjoy a high-end product, where a three month production time

contains a story of ageless culture.

MILAN DESIGN WEEK 2017

The new projects by cc-tapis presented on the occasion of Milan Design Week 2017 express the creativity and the inspirations of the designers who have collaborated

with the brand, maintaining the focus on materials.

From the geometric inspiration of Patricia Urquiola, to the new figurations of Federico Pepe. The refined reinterpretation of postindustrial influences of Faye Toogood, to the works of Chiara Andreatti and Studiopepe which look back at specific cultural references: the first being ancient Japan and the latter being the 20’s. Alex Proba and Mae Engelgeer celebrate color combining it with graphics, whilst

Martino Gamper and Parisotto + Formenton play with architectural lay-outand intersections.

ROTAZIONI A and Bstandard color version

designed by Patricia Urquiola

Rotazioni plays on the repetition of overlapping cylindrical forms that emphasize the circle as the matrix of the design. A scale of pastel colors and chromatic contrasts insinuate the gradient on the surface of the cylinders creating a three dimensional effect. This enhances the volume and dynamic composition of the design:

from this “Rotazioni” which translated means “Rotations” was born.

Inventoryby Faye Toogood

On the occasion of the opening of the new cc-tapis showroom in Piazza Santo Stefano 10 in Milan, British designer Faye Toogood has created the

installation and the collection Inventory.

The installation showcases the initial starting references for the collection, inspired by Faye’s material library. Experimental samples

were translated and formed into an edition of 10 rugs. The design of the room places at its heart three elements that demonstrate the provenance

of the collection - mesh, rubber and canvas - shown in Toogood’s signature geometries Cube, Sphere and Cylinder.

British designer Faye Toogood has delved into her material library to create her new collection of rugs, produced in collaboration with the

Italian manufacturer CC-Tapis. The wide range of materials, patterns and haberdashery in the Toogood archives provided the initial inspiration

behind these new designs, which translate postindustrial influences such as vulcanised rubber, distressed plaster and security mesh into raw yet gentle furnishings. The resultant rugs experiment with a variety of

quilting, applique and stitching techniques: “Cage” features a diamond latticework effect derived from steel grilles; “Rope” and “Quilt” incorporate sinuous appliqued coils; “Stitch” and “Patch” play with layering and fraying; and the diagonally bisected “Tack” features a

graphic, abstracted stitching detail. Produced entirely by hand in Nepal, using eco-friendly wools and silks,

it is the first time that hand-knotting and hand-weaving have been combined in the same rugs. The designs are available in a restrained

palette of cream, charcoal and raw, undyed tones - the Toogood aesthetic given a fresh iteration for CC-Tapis.

Faye Toogood is a British designer. Her furniture and objects demonstrate a preoccupation with materiality and experimentation. All of her pieces are handmade by small-scale fabricators and traditional artisans, with an honesty to the rawness and irregularity of the chosen material. With an academic training in the theory and practise of fine art, and a vocational background at the forefront of the magazine industry, Toogood approaches product design with a singular and acutely honed eye. Her highly sculptural work, while showing an astute respect for the past, is derived from pure self-expression and instinct. Toogood’s objects are grouped together into her trademark numbered ‘Assemblages’. This allows her to avoid the formulaic, to experiment with the materials and processes that dominate her thinking at a particular time. With each Assemblage, she engages not only with the products themselves but also with the three-dimensional space in which they are exhibited, working across multiple disciplines to create a single body of work with an intuitive and unified narrative.

Bliss collectiondesigned by Mae Engelgeer

Inspiration for this project came from a sample that Mae Engelgeer created, shaping round curves and trying to create a 3D effect. After a period of using straight graphic lines, and feeling almost captured by

it, she felt the need to use bold shapes again.

Keeping the playfulness of the Memphis movement in mind and experimenting with shape and color was the start of the BLISS

collection. Mixing elements like pattern and form with different production techniques giving life to the rugs. Using high quality

materials like Himalayan wool with pure silk makes some parts literally glow. She refers to it as “jewellery” for your space.

Dutch designer Mae Engelgeer attended the Amsterdam Fashion Instituut where she specialised in textile design, graduating in 2004. Later she was accepted to the prestigious Master Course in Applied Arts at the Sandberg Instituut and developed her first collection of textiles at

TextielLab.

In 2014 Engelgeer opened her own studio in Amsterdam, working on product design and development, installations, and international collaborations.

Mae Engelgeer’s work is characterised by a typical use of colour, geometric shapes and linear elements which is unmistakably hers. An eye for detail and sense of composition are important in her designs when it comes to introducing balance throughout a design. Her style has an open character that could be described as minimalistic with a playful twist. She cleverly combines craft, new technology and materials into beautiful textiles that enrich any home, without losing ground on refinement or

quality.

RITOURNELLE and TURLURETTE standard color versiondesigned by Federico Pepe

At the base of this project is an impressionist approach. Pepe started from his personal memories and feelings related to traditional carpet iconography, optically

recreating classic decoration.

After the first glance, modules start to emerge from distant worlds, abstract geometries that follow mathematical patterns like musical “ritournelle” or jingles,

which is where the names of the rugs stem from.

Federico Pepe was born in Omegna in 1976 and lives and works in Milan. Federico Pepe is a designer with an interest in how the communication process can be shaped, fully aware that the act of designing is increasingly an intertwining of disciplines. He is able to initiate and build relationships and experiences, educated to move between different practices, he is an artist, author, director, catalyst, cultural operator, creative, publisher, entrepreneur, curator, producer and adman.

THE ONE OR THE OTHER COLLECTIONstandard color versiondesigned by Alex proba

ONE OR THE OTHER is a collection inspired by various materials of the physical world that have opposing characteristics of fibre or textile with which they are paired. This collection is an abstract representation of the concept of unique worlds colliding and coexisting on one surface. Additionally, it is a celebration

of color and pattern — a positive stimulation of the senses.

Founded in 2013 by Alex Proba, Studio Proba is a New York based multidisciplinary design studio focusing on product, graphic, environmental, furniture design and artwork.

Alex is a multidisciplinary designer and art director from Germany. She studied spatial and graphic design at the Akademie Mode und Design Hamburg Germany, and product and furniture design at Design Academy Eindhoven Netherlands. In 2011, she moved to New York, where she worked for a number of companies. Alex was an Art Director at Kickstarter and Design Director at Mother New York.

She has been recognized by Print Magazine for its annual New Visual Artists Review, selecting 20 international designers under the age of 30. Her clients include Nike, Target, Google, AIGA, Oscar Health, Mother New York, General Assembly, Maison Gerard, Kickstarter among many others.

designed by Chiara Adreatti

A carpet made from natural undyed materials that looks back to ancient Japan for inspiration. Made completely from undyed Himalayan wool whose natural shades go from tones of sand and brown to dirty whites. Connected to age-old customs, where rugs were laid around the fire or “irori”, the traditional centre of the home.

Born in Veneto not far from Venice Chiara Andreatti moved to Milan where she graduated in Industrial Design at IED in 2003 and attended a master at Domus Academy. She collaborated in design studios such as Raffaella Mangiarotti, Renato Montagner and since 2006, she has worked with studio Lissoni Associati(MI), whilst at the same time, following parallel freelance projects and working with companies like Atipico, Glas Italia, Non Sans Raison, cc-tapis, Covo, Reflex, Casamilano and Armani Jeans.

With a continuous research for aesthetics she often combines the artisan culture of her venetian roots with the design and industrial needs believing that an handcrafted and poetic touch on everyday objects will enrich our life.

CASELLARIO MONOCROMO 2.0standard color version

designed by Parisotto + Formenton

The continuation of the design research that inspired the first rug designed by Parisotto + Formenton in 2014 was the foundation for the new “Casellario Monochrome 2.0”. The geometry of the rug, with highly contemporary lines, recalls the patterns

of wooden or stone floors laid in in a “casellario” or block form.

The geometry of the design is disturbed by a few exceptions, some of the horizontal strips, each with a varying size, have oblique cuts breaking the pattern of the rug.

The rug plays on the apparent contradiction of one color. The fields of color are juxtaposed with different materials (Himalayan wool and pure silk) which give varying depths and tones of the same color, it’s read as a series of tone-on-tone

nuances with contrasting levels of brilliance.

The combination of graphics, geometry and color give life to a seemingly random pattern that, through different methods and inserts of fringes and brass, create a language inspired by the twenties. In the place of words, a geometry made from wool and metal are harmoniously combined to

create a type of visual poetry.

Studiopepe is a design agency renowned for its eclectic and layered perspective. Founded in Milan in 2006, the agency takes a visionary and multidisciplinary approach to design. Our strongly recognizable identity is based on experimentation, citations, and unusual associations that

seek uniqueness and respect the client’s individuality.

Studiopepe’s projects are characterized by their emotional and aesthetic impact, melding rigour with vision, and the continuous search for

contaminations of contemporary codes and languages. Arianna Lelli Mami and Chiara Di Pinto founded Studiopepe, both coming from solid design

experience; together they realize styling projects with strong emotional value. Given their eclectic and composite background, Studiopepe is

focused on creative consultancy in all forms of manifestation.

ARIANNA LELLI MAMI

Arianna graduated at Politecnico di Milano in Interior Design. She has always been fascinated by the way people live and inhabit space, she looks at design from a viewpoint that is free from rigid schemes. Passionate about art, she collects objets trouvés that are then re-explored and utilized to create installations that often inspire

projects for the agency. Recently, she has been working on a personal project that unites rediscovered photography with collage.

CHIARA DI PINTO

Following an accademic training in fine arts, Chiara received her degree in Industrial Design at Politecnico di Milano. In 1996 she started collaborating as an interior stylist and journalist for many Italian and international magazines. Due to her artistic path, she has always

had a strong interest in materials, shapes, and colours; her approach to design and her love of research is istinctive and endless.
