The Occupy Wall Street Movement and Money in AmericaOctober 19-24, 2011
Most Americans have heard at least something about the Occupy Wall Streetmovement, and 43% say they agree with its views. 27% disagree with the views of themovement, and 30% don’t have an opinion.
Americans do not think the distribution of wealth and money in the U.S. is fair -- 66%believe that wealth should be more evenly distributed.
The Occupy Wall Street movement has gone global in the past two weeks, and seven in ten
Americans have heard at least something about the rallies and protests that have occurredaround the world.

Against a backdrop of growing discontent with government and years of economic anxieties,43% of Americans say they are in agreement with the views of the Occupy Wall Streetmovement. 27% say they disagree with it, and 30% don’t have an opinion.

Those most likely to say they agree with the movement include people under age 30,Democrats, liberals and those with more education. But the movement also appeals tosignificant numbers of other demographic groups: nearly half of moderates, and a similarpercentage of independents, say they agree with the movement, as do 43% of those age 30 to64.

Money and Politics in America
The Occupy Wall Street protesters object to the concentration of wealth in the U.S. among asmall percentage of the population, and have targeted their anger at large U.S. banks and thepeople who run them.
Many Americans believe that money and wealth in the U.S. is unfairly distributed. Two in threesay that wealth is not distributed as equitably as it should be, and just 26% think the distributionof wealth and money in the U.S. is fair.

There is a partisan divide on this question; most Republicans view the distribution of wealth asfair, while most Democrats disagree. However, even one in 3 Republicans thinks money andwealth should be distributed more evenly in the U.S. 67% of independents also see unfairness.

This poll was conducted among a random sample of 1,650 adults nationwide, interviewed by telephone October 19-24, 2011. Phone numbers were dialed from random digit dial samples of both standard land-line and cell phones.The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points.The error for subgroups is higher. An oversample was conducted for this survey which will be analyzed in a future pollrelease.
