• Today’s refrigerator consumes just 1/3 of the energy of a typical

1980 model

And yet…

• We are marketing more efficient appliances, but it is not enough to guarantee transformation.

• Cold appliance average life span is 16 years

• 50 year old appliances can still be found in use…

• Consumers see a value in old appliances as long as they still work. Running cost and environmental impacts are disregarded or not known.

Savings can light up a large town

Replacing 15.4 million

outdated large

appliances would

provide savings of up to

3.6 TWh.

This is equivalent to the

electricity needed to

power over 1,000,000 UK

homes for an entire year

• To ensure that consumers across Europe:

replace old installed inefficient appliances

choose the most efficient appliances

• We also call on governments to investigate

market transformation instruments to

complement traditional policies

Industry calling for long term

incentive schemes

Several possible mechanisms

• Tax credits for consumers (Italy)

• Tax credits for producers (US)

• Consumer rebate schemes (Spain and

newly proposed $300m in USA)

• Buyback (Australia)

• Consumer awareness (UK, Hungary &

Germany)

UK Time to Change Campaign

• Information web-site: www.t2c.org.uk launched 11 October 2007

appliance with new A+ model

Authoritative independent data

Easy to understand

Not marketing specific brands or models

Savings calculator

• The savings calculator is the cornerstone of the www.t2c.org.uk

• Keying in the age of an old appliance pulls up the cash, CO2 and

kWh savings of replacement with a new A+ models.

• Provides five year overview of £££ savings

Results....show me

• kWh?

for instant recognition….a lightbulb

• CO2 ?.....1 kilo = approx. 510 litres.

Balloon = 5 litres

• ££s we all relate to the £ in our pocket

Calculates at current energy prices

EnergyEnergy saved = 323

kWh/year

Percentage saved = 54%

The equivalent of leaving a light

on, day and night, for 961 days

(nearly 3 years)

Carbon Dioxide CO2

Co2 saved = 173 kg/year

Enough Co2 to fill 17,680

five litre balloons

Money

££s saved = £45.03/year

Over 5 years = £ 225.15
