account at such a bank and it is called “life.” Every morning life credits us with 86,400 seconds. And every evening it rules as “lost” whatever we have failed to use for a good purpose. Life carries over no balances. If we fail to use the day’s deposit, the loss is irreversible.

This season, when we count the Omer from Pesah, the festival of freedom, to Shavuot, the festival commemorating the giving of the Torah, should remind us that the best way to live our lives is by associating the freedom to be ourselves with becoming the best selves that we are capable of becoming. We should become people who feel responsible not only for themselves, but for their fellow Jews and for humanity. The Sefirah should be the period when we count our days, when we

take stock of our daily accomplishments, when we keep a record of our spiritual progress. Each of us should be as deeply concerned about a spiritual accounting, as we are about a fiscal audit.

On the second evening of Passover, at the seder, we begin the season of Sefirah, the “counting of the Omer.” For a period of seven weeks at the evening service, we count the days announcing that we are a day nearer to Shavuot. We are used to counting. We count medicine

drops for our children. We count money in the bank. And we often count days until a looked-for event. But we give very little thought to the true significance of counting days. Very few of us realize how valuable our own time is. For young people time seems to stretch on indefinitely. When we are a little older we get busy making a living – so busy that we don’t take time to live. Perhaps this is the reason that even when we succeed in our careers, we have a sense of failure and a feeling that life has passed us by. We consider a business person smart when he knows how to use his money wisely. Imagine the following arrangement with the bank. Each morning the bank credits your account with $86,400. However, the bank does not allow you to carry over any balance from day to day. Every evening the bank cancels whatever money you have failed to use that day. What do you think you would do? Wouldn’t you be wise to draw out every cent and to use it? Each of us has an

YOM HASHOAH -- LIGHT A YELLOW CANDLE TO REMEMBER THOSE WHO PERISHED

Sunday-Monday, April 11-12, 2010

It’s been sixty five years since Nazi concentration camps were liberated, and the Holocaust that claimed six million Jewish lives came to an end. To ensure that the six million did not die in vain and that the Holocaust never happens again, will join Jews throughout North America by participating in the Yom HaShoah Yellow Candle Program TM, a program sponsored by the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs in cooperation with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and the Men of Reform Judaism.

As the years pass, the memories of those who fell victim to the ultimate hate crime must not diminish. That’s why we are encouraging your family and every family in Congregation B’nai Israel to light just one Yellow Candle on the night of Sunday, April 11th when each family lights a Yellow Candle, it will increase the awareness of the Holocaust and perpetuate our commitment to our people.

The memory is important because the number of Holocaust survivors is diminishing with each passing day. As we lose this precious link, those who deny the Holocaust ever happened gain strength. Sadly, 20% of all high school students lack any knowledge of the Holocaust.

Yom HaShoah candles are a highly visible symbol for keeping the flame alive. Their color recalls the badges Jews were forced to wear in Nazi-occupied Europe, but their flame inspires hope that we can yet make our world a tolerant place to live. The Men’s Club will deliver the Yellow Candles the first week of April.

Spring is finally here! Usually when spring arrives, we are winding down activities for the year, and beginning to plan for next year. This year is different. Thanks to Vivian Lurie and Kathleen Smith, our Membership Co-chairs, we are beginning

a new program this spring called “What’s on Your Plate for 2010?” The first event planned is this month, on Friday, April 23. We will daven at the Kotel at Kabbalat Shabbat services, followed by a superb delectable Middle-eastern Shabbat dinner, prepared lovingly by many volunteers. After dinner and zimriah, there will be Shabbat schmoozing and some special activities for the children. Make your reservations early, so you won’t miss out! Thank you to Sisterhood who has graciously agreed to help jump start this program by making a generous financial donation. We would like to encourage all members to attend, especially our families! It would be wonderful if we could pack in the social hall to the brim. When you see Kathleen or Vivian, make sure and ask them about it. As Passover continues through the first week of April, let’s all thank the Mitzvah Men’s Club for preparing our annual Passover BBQ on April 1. Wow, what a treat! Celebrate Israel Independence Day on Sunday, April 18 at Largo Central Park at Largo Cultural Center. Suncoast JCC (Pinellas County JCC) is sponsoring this event that will feature food, fun and an Israeli market. The JCC is partnering with area synagogues to make this a true community event. PROFILES IN LEADERSHIP Introducing: Cindy Weisberg Member since: 1984

Please define yourself. How I define my self has changed as I've grown and matured. From someone with little self confidence, I now have much self confidence and enjoy traveling and trying new things. My career has mostly involved children, having taught school for many years in Rhode Island, North Carolina and then the 15 year stint at the Pre-school of Temple Beth-El. But, I would say my greatest achievements are having been married to the same wonderful person for 40 years and raising two terrific sons. My sons are both professionals, honest and tolerant people, which are the most important of traits to me. And of course, my two gorgeous granddaughters, Jordan and Ella are the light of my life.

What’s your role at CBI? At CBI in addition to being a Board member, I currently advise Bonnie with the Pre-school when asked. I had offered to work with the Tree of Life advertising, but discovered that was not my niche. I feel that I am a good idea person, but do not wish to do a project that has no end.

From the President What’s your favorite book or movie? My favorite song on my IPOD is a lovely duet sung by Natalie and Nat King Cole. I love it because it reminds me of when I was a little girl and my father singing only to me.

What’s your favorite Jewish holiday? My favorite Jewish Holiday is Sukkot. I love fall, the smells and changing colors, and I love eating outdoors in a sukkah as our ancestors did.

What values do you try to emulate and pass on? My Jewish values that I learned as a child are the ones I try to pass on to my children and grandchildren, mostly honesty, integrity and helping others less fortunate.

Who has made the biggest impact on your Jewish life? Many people over my life have made huge impacts on me, but I would say that finding my long lost cousins in Israel a few months ago has to be right up there! We connected immediately and felt a special kinship that only family can have. We can't wait to return to Israel and spend more time with them.

Which is your favorite Jewish ritual to practice? My favorite Jewish ritual is getting my house ready for Passover and going through the Hagaddah every year.

When do you feel most Jewish? I feel the most Jewish while in shul over Yom Kippur.

What is your most memorable moment at CBI? Of course Seth and Ari's B'nai mitzvah and Seth's wedding under the Chuppa were so very special to Bob and me. However, my recent Adult Bat Mitzvah was more than memorable. I had wanted a Bat Mitzvah all my life, and finally was able to start the class. Then I was diagnosed with breast cancer. But the class was so important to me that no matter how lousy I felt from the chemo, I almost always made it there. When I went on the Bima to read Torah for the first time in my life, I knew I had achieved something significant.

What motivated you to say yes to CBI? That's easy. I love my shul and always want to stay involved in some way.

What do you do to re-energize? Many things. Go watch a sunset, listen to jazz and have a great glass of red wine.

Andrea is a student at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America where is working on her Masters program in the William Davidson Graduate School of Jewish Education. Men’s Club Shabbat was a great success with over 100 congregants joining us at our Man of the Year dinner honoring Marc Reiskind. Thanks to Jesse Rodman and Steven Wein for coordinating the events and Alan Gross for running the kitchen. Thank you to the many men who volunteered their time.

Our Passover BBQ went great and many enjoyed BBQ beef, hot dogs and all the fixings. Thanks to all who helped Hard to believe but Mother’s day is only a month away and our annual brunch will be Sunday, May 9 at 10AM. This event is always a crowd pleaser so RSVP early. There will be musical entertainment and a luscious buffet the ladies will love! Ladies who RSVP are free, Men are $15.00 and kids are $7.50 (under 8 are free). Men’s Club will also be hosting a CBI Congregational

JUNIOR CONGREGATION

All B’nai Israel children, ages nine to thirteen (grades 3 through 7) are invited to participate in our special age-appropriate Shabbat Service in the Chapel. Junior Congregation will meet on Saturday, April 10th, 17th and 24th at 10:00 am.

THE PAULINE RIVKIND PRESCHOOL

CBI’s preschoolers look forward to Friday mornings! It is one of the most popular days at Pauline Rivkind Preschool. Why? Every Friday morning the entire school comes together to celebrate Shabbat. We sing songs, dance, recite the blessings, enjoy a snack of challah and grape juice and most weeks we hear stories read by our own Abba Cicco. The children are introduced to new Shabbat songs as well as holiday songs during this time. We all look forward to this time all week long. How can you make Fridays special in your home? In school we talk about cleaning extra well for the Sabbath. Use that at home to have the children help clean their bedrooms or playrooms. We sing a song about setting the table for Shabbat. Ask your child to help you set the Sabbath table, with candle sticks, Kiddush cups and challah. Instead of watching television after dinner, spend the evening playing games and reading stories. Welcome other families into your home for Shabbat Celebration. These are memories your children will remember and want to repeat as they grow up and have families of their own. It is a beautiful time to be together and appreciate all we have in our families and friends. I hope you choose a Shabbat this month and make it one for the memory books!

March seemed to be the month of rebirth! Everything around us is once again green and blooming. Pesach gave us the opportunity to gather with our families and recall the story of the exodus from Egypt. I hope it was meaningful for you. Kadima and Halutzim warmed up for Pesach at a chocolate Seder lead by USYers. It was a fun and tasty way to learn about the aspects of a Passover Seder. It was a pleasure to host Gabe Seed for USY Shabbat. The USYers enjoyed having Shabbat lunch with him and hearing about his life journeys which lead him to JTS. Listening to Elie Wiesel speak is inspiring and I am pleased so many USYers joined me March 11 at Eckerd College to hear his lecture. In just a few weeks we will observe Yom Hashoah and I am certain his words will resound loudly in our minds. Kadima 8th graders were welcomed by the USYers at the March Dine and Dash. Thank you to the LeCompte Family for sponsoring this popular program! USYers once again traveled to Jacksonville for USY Mercaz Spring Sub Regional Convention. Spending time with USY friends always makes for a special Shabbat experience. Every Wednesday evening many of our high school students come to CBI to attend Hebrew High. Even after a long day at school they come to study and spend time with their Jewish friends. Many come early to schmooze with their friends and the Youth Lounge is full of chatter during the break between classes. To all the students who completed their Hebrew High studies and are now part of the 5770 graduating class I wish you a Mazal Tov!

FUNDRAISING REPORT

New Torah Covers CBI has been working with artist, Jeanette Kuvin Oren, who has designed four new Torah covers for the Shalosh Regalim Holidays, Pesach, Shavuot and Sukkot. We are pleased that we will be able to use these to dress our Torahs for these festivals. We have 4 covers because we may have at least 4 Torahs. They are available to the congregation to dedicate in honor or in memory of a special person(s). The dedication opportunities are $6,000 each. For more information please inquire in the office or speak to me.

Scrip We have a new much more user friendly SCRIP order form. It lists some of the most common vendors in the Tampa Bay area. The amounts are listed so you know if you if you can purchase a $20, $25 or $50 card. Also listed are the percentages that each vendor gives back to CBI. There are hundreds of additional vendors available, so ask if you don’t see one of your favorites (sorry Publix and Target do not participate). FAMILY PROGRAMS

The observance of Passover is still fresh in our minds. We gathered around the Seder table with family and friends to retell the story of the Exodus from Egypt. Many of us attended the CBI Second Seder and shared the experience with our Congregational Family. Every year I seem to view the story from a new and different perspective, which adds new and deeper meaning. Over the past several months there has been conversation about looking at our programming from a different perspective. How can we offer a Shabbat experience that is both rich with tradition but deepens our observance? After all Shabbat dinner does not always have to be chicken and matzah balls! The vision: Bring people together and re-discover the joys of Shabbat; enhance the Shabbat experience in the hopes that we will re-learn old customs and create new traditions for ourselves and our families. I am pleased to announce a new concept in programming, “What’s On YOUR Plate?” This programming promises to be fresh, innovative and exciting! As part of this series “Got Shabbat” offers a new way to experience Shabbat. Join us April 23, for the first in this dinner series. See the flyer in this bulletin for all the details. ABOUT Rabbi Shugerman Rabbi Andy Shugerman, a talented and passionate Jewish

educator, has been named rabbinic fellow of The Jewish Theological

Seminary (JTS). Rabbi Shugerman is responsible for educational

outreach, including study groups, special programs, and synagogue

educational events and lectures. He was ordained by The Rabbinical

School of JTS and earned a master’s degree from JTS’s William Davidson

Graduate School of Jewish Education. Rabbi Shugerman received his BA

from Brandeis University, where he majored in Near Eastern and Judaic

Studies. As a student at JTS, Rabbi Shugerman developed his skills and

talents as an educator while teaching Jewish studies at the Rodeph

Sholom School and Muslim-Jewish relations at the Abraham Joshua

Heschel High School, both in New York City. He was also selected to

participate in the prestigious Legacy Heritage Rabbinic Fellows program,

through which he helped to revitalize Congregation Shir Chadash of

Metairie, Louisiana, a community still recovering from hurricanes Katrina

and Gustave.

Combining his love of education and music, Rabbi Shugerman

was a founding member of JamDaven, a band he formed with Davidson

School classmates that developed new approaches to prayer through

music and meditation. He also served as a scholar-in-residence at the

Charles E. Smith Day School of Rockville, Maryland, and led college

students in rebuilding homes in New Orleans with Jewish Funds for

Justice. Prior to coming to JTS, Rabbi Shugerman studied at the

Conservative Yeshiva in Jerusalem while working for the Masorti (Israeli

Conservative) Movement and attended the Ziegler School of Rabbinic

Studies in Los Angeles. While in California, he assisted Rabbi Sharon

Brous, a JTS alumni, in founding IKAR, a spiritual community that has

been nationally recognized for its innovative approach to Judaism.

SPIN-A-YARN REPORT

We had a wonderful tour of the new All Children's Hospital, where we delivered four shopping bags full of our beautifully knitted blankets. Thank you to all of you for taking time to share your knitting skills with the children in the hospital. They are very appreciative. Thank you to Phyllis Werner for making the arrangements for the tour. We had a very informative guide who also serves as Associate Vice President in charge of fundraising for All Children's, Sylvia Ameen. Thank you also to Alice Ettinger, not only one of our knitters but also the Advanced Education Specialist for the hospital. Alice coordinated arrangements for us to deliver our homemade blankets to her special patients at All Children's. It was a rewarding culmination of our "Mitzvah Day" project to knit blankets for the patients of All Children's Hospital. We are fortunate that we are able to knit year round for different organization in the community. So, to that end, we will continue knitting blankets for Menorah Manor and All Children's Hospital.
