As cultural commentator Eric Metaxas observed this week, ‘even polics is downstream from culture’. The media – television, radio, internet, film and print – shapes us to see things in a parcular way. This is why it’s so important for Chrisans to be acvely involved and among those orienng the culture. CBA is all about being in the bloodstream of New Zealand’s mainstream media and is acvely contribung in a number of strategic ways. EQUIPPING THE INFLUENCERS : ‘Salt’, iniated and run by CBA, is a network for Chrisans who work within mainstream media in New Zealand. By offering support, mentoring and encouragement in their faith, we’re striving to enhance the effecveness of Chrisans working in this influenal industry. Salt has also become a hothouse for idea-generaon and story-sharing. CALL TO PRAYER : Reliance on God is at the core of all we do. We have invited more than one thousand churches throughout NZ to take a few minutes on Sunday 5th August to pray for our mass media. Please encourage your church to be part of ‘Media Prayer Day’ (See reverse for more details). LAUNCHING MEDIA CAREERS : Each year, CBA offers scholarships to three young Chrisans studying for a career in media. Past recipients have excelled in their workplaces and have become valuable parcipants in CBA’s programming. This year’s 36 excellent applicants are an encouraging indicaon of the quanty and quality of young Chrisan talent soon to enter NZ’s mass media. “DON’T HATE THE MEDIA, BECOME THE MEDIA” Jello Biafra – musician, polical acvist: All of these iniaves augment CBA’s mission and capacity to produce programmes which communicate the Chrisan faith, creavely and respecully, to tens of thousands of listeners. Our efforts are made possible by your generous contribuons. ALL OF US WHO PROFESSIONALLY USE THE MEDIA ARE THE SHAPERS OF SOCIETY. WE CAN VULGARISE THAT SOCIETY. WE CAN BRUTALISE IT… OR WE CAN HELP LIFT IT ONTO A HIGHER LEVEL.’’ William Bernbach – New York adversing creave director (1911-1982) ‘‘ After becoming a Christian, I would meet so many people who commented how over the years they had seen me on the TV or listened to the breakfast radio show and had prayed for me. I recall thinking two things; one – prayer works, and two – being deeply thankful that people would go to that trouble for me.– Simon Barnett

There is little debate that media play a huge role in influencing the thoughts and beliefs of our society. As cultural commentator Eric Metaxas observed this week, ‘even politics is downstream from culture’. The media – television, radio, internet, film and print – shapes us to see things in a particular way. This is why it’s so important for Christians to be actively involved and among those orienting the culture.

CBA is all about being in the bloodstream of New Zealand’s mainstream media and is actively contributing in a number of strategic ways.

We’re delighted to report that CBA is a finalist in the New York Radio Awards for our Christmas morning on NewstalkZB hosted by Ian Grant. We were also a

finalist in the 2012 NZ Radio Awards for ‘Best Technical Production’. These are outstanding achievements and we’re grateful to the many talented individuals who have made it happen. Both awards give CBA greater credibility among mainstream broadcasters and will open doors to more opportunities, both locally and internationally.

EasTER “ThE bEsT yET” Thank you to all who contributed towards the costs of producing CBA’s Easter programming on NewstalkZB and Radio Sport.

The broadcast went extremely well and we received very positive and thoughtful feedback. One listener wrote, “the best yet.” NewstalkZB’s General Manager Dallas Gurney wrote: “Thank you to all who contributed towards our Easter programming. Congratulations to you and your team on a superb day of radio. I enjoyed it all – please pass on my thanks to everyone involved.”

We were pleased with the variety of guests and the quality of contributors, which included Bishop NT Wright, Dr. Prof. Alistair McGrath, Dr. Ben Carson, Dr. Mark Strom, Liz Curtis Higgs, Dr. John Dickson and many others. To hear these interviews and many more, visit cba.org.nz and click on ‘Easter highlights’ (or request a CD).

Thanks to NZ On Air for helping to fund Easter, Real Life and Scrubcutter.

Last month, a Neilson Report revealed that $320million was spent on radio advertising in 2011. Why? Because it works! The report observed that ‘New Zealanders have demonstrated an insatiable appetite for media content’. With a tiny fraction of that budget,

we’re finding clever, innovative and thoughtful ways of being a clarion amongst the noise – lifting listeners’ minds to higher priorities – and encouraging them towards faith in God.If you can partner with us in our mission, we’d be very grateful. Thank you!

5 August 2012 is ‘Media Prayer Day’. In 2010, more than 700 churches took a few minutes of their Sunday service to pray

for the spread of the Gospel through NZ’s mass media. Please help by encouraging your church to join us. Visit www.mediaprayerday.com for more information or write to us (address details below).

Real Life with John Cowan continues to rate well, with more than four times as many listeners than the competing talk network (Research International 2012). Guests over recent months have included (left to right from top) John Key, David Shearer, Wendy Petrie, Hayley Westenra and Martin Snedden. Many of our Christian guests have expressed their faith naturally and articulately, including Warehouse CEO Mark Powell and well-known Christian communicators Dr. Ben Carson, Juli Slattery and Philip Yancey.

Visit www.reallife.net.nz to hear all of our recent guests.
