Introduction San Ignacio and sister-town, Santa Elena

make up Belize's second largest urban area. The two towns are separated by the Macal River and Belize's only suspension bridge, the one-lane Hawksworth Bridge (Built in 1949).

The Cayo District is the largest district in Belize.

It is located on the western side of the country which borders Guatemala.

Getting there

San Ignacio Town is a two hour bus ride from Belize City.

Buses leave and return on the hour. I San Ignacio also has an airstrip. The is also an airstrip at Central Farm

Importance

The Cayo District is mainly an agricultural district, with the chief crops being citrus, (oranges, grapefruit, and tangerine), as well as bananas.

the Western Highway runs from Belize City to the Guatemalan border, and the Hummingbird Highway which starts in Belmopan and ends at the juncture of the Coastal Road and the Southern Highway in the Stann Creek District.
