So, What Does All This Mean For Us As

Educators?

Page 28: Cayman Islands National Education Conference 2017

• Most countries throughout the world are currently trying to refine their educational systems:

– 21st Century

– Maintain cultural identity

• Problem – trying to do this by keeping what they’ve always had.

Page 29: Cayman Islands National Education Conference 2017

Current Educational System

• Industrial Revolution

• Driven by the economic importance of the time

• Designed around the ‘intellectual model of the mind’ –academic and non-academic

Page 30: Cayman Islands National Education Conference 2017
Page 31: Cayman Islands National Education Conference 2017

Today’s Schools – Factory Model

• Ringing bells

• Separate facilities, departments, rooms

• Separate subjects

• Students grouped according to date of ‘manufacture,

Page 32: Cayman Islands National Education Conference 2017
Page 33: Cayman Islands National Education Conference 2017

Divergent Thinking

• Look at ways to interpret thinking• See lots of possible answers• Lateral thinking• Think outside of the box• Lateral Thinking Activities• ‘The Little Book Of Thunks’

Page 34: Cayman Islands National Education Conference 2017

1. Get over the idea that education is academic, non-academic, abstract, theoretical – this is a myth!

2. Realise that effective learning happens in a range of group settings.

3. Look at the culture that we’re creating in our schools.

So Where Do We Go From Here?

Page 35: Cayman Islands National Education Conference 2017

What Can We Look At Specifically?

Curriculum

Pedagogy

Learning Environment

Assessment

Page 36: Cayman Islands National Education Conference 2017

Curriculum

• Holistic – Subject & Learning Skills

• Balanced – Academic Vs Creative Vs Physical

• Contextualized – Relevant

• Identify & Develop Students Strengths

• Support Students In Areas For Improvement

Page 37: Cayman Islands National Education Conference 2017

Pedagogy

• Become the ‘Lazy Teacher’ -student ownership

• Think outside the box(https://youtu.be/C1yYB85ArHE?list=PL87hcZRf9p6Bcr3ZJQyIjGDFgv2038NDj)

• Put the ‘Fun’ into learning(https://youtu.be/2lXh2n0aPyw?list=PL87hcZRf9p6Bcr3ZJQyIjGDFgv2038NDj)

• Provide opportunities for different groupings

• ‘Just In Case Learning’ Vs ‘Just In Time Learning’

• Teach students ‘how’ to think

Page 38: Cayman Islands National Education Conference 2017

Learning Environment

• Where could our students end up working?

Page 39: Cayman Islands National Education Conference 2017

Page 44: Cayman Islands National Education Conference 2017

So What Are The Implications For The

Way In Which We Develop Our

Classroom Learning Environments?

Page 45: Cayman Islands National Education Conference 2017

Assessment

• Summative often marginalises many students (https://youtu.be/D-eVF_G_p-Y)

• Develop independently reflective students –peer and self assessment
