Citizenship project — launch of the Community Awareness Programme The Community Awareness Programme (CAP) of the CAWT „Citizenship for People with Disabilities‟ project was successfully launched in December between Donegal and Strabane Council areas. The Programme aspires to supporting people with a disability to maximise their independence, lead fulfilled lives and participate fully in society.

The first stage in the delivery of the CAP is the establishment of a cross border stakeholder group to provide feedback on the barriers faced by people with disabilities in this catchment area and to make recommendations on how these can be addressed. The group have met once so far and has a broad representation to ensure that issues pertinent to people with disabilities are raised and addressed. All of the partners will work together to find practical ways make their communities a more disability-friendly place to live. The learning from the CAP will be shared across the entire border area in the hope that it will lead to greater opportunities for people with disabilities to be active citizens in their communities. Cross border ENT Services

The HSE DNE and the SHSCT have established the island's first cross border hospital service for the speciality of ENT. To date, 2,270 people living in the HSE DNE area have received ENT outpatient appointments in Monaghan Hospital. Additionally, 859 Southern Trust patients have been seen in ENT clinics in either Craigavon or Daisy Hill Hospitals. ENT patients from the HSE DNE area requiring in-patient treatment, can now receive this in either Craigavon or Daisy Hill Hospitals. To support the establishment of this cross border ENT service, nurses from Monaghan hospital engaged in observational training in the Southern Trust. The Southern Trust ENT consultants, already registered with the GMC in Northern Ireland, are now registered with the Irish Medical Council, which enables them to treat Republic of Ireland patients. Once the EU funding period has elapsed the cross border ENT service will continue as a permanent collaborative service between the HSE DNE and the Southern Trust, as mainstreaming has been agreed. Cross Border Mobility All three aspects of the project are progressing well. The Coaching & Mentoring Project is in the process of procuring the delivery of the Coaching & Mentoring training. It is hoped that successful service providers will be appointed in early 2011 with training to commence shortly afterwards. The Moving and Handling Project plan to adopt an existing e-learning Manual Handling Awareness training programme supported by a paper based version which will be launched in early 2011. This will be delivered throughout the CAWT region. The Social Work Project Board have commissioned a 4-day training programme to support Social Work Team Leaders to develop and enhance their management and leadership skills. The programme will be delivered via a „Coaching for Performance‟ framework using specific social work research indicators. The programme will be delivered in the HSE DNE / Newry areas and Derry / Donegal / Sligo areas. Obesity

The Obesity Project has been working with HSE Procurement on the tender for the delivery of its prevention & management programmes in four pilot sites across the CAWT border region. This has been a comprehensive and robust process and will result in a range of local partnership delivery approaches. The Project Board is expecting to appoint the service providers for a two year period in early 2011 with programme delivery commencing shortly afterwards. Meanwhile the project approach has been well received following presentations at the recent North South all island Dietetic conference in Dublin and the Queens University Belfast Nursing and Midwifery conference „Taking Action on Childhood Obesity.‟ The Project is developing links with the all island Obesity Hub through its Quality Assurance Advisory Group with the intention of developing a Learning Network in 2011 to support the appointed service providers in the implementation and evaluation of the programmes. Diabetes The CAWT Diabetes Project is currently recruiting diabetes specialist nurses and diabetes specialist dieticians to establish Pre-pregnancy Care clinics for women with diabetes who are planning a pregnancy. The clinics will be located in selected hospitals across all 5 Health and Social Care Trusts in Northern Ireland and in the HSE West and Dublin North East in the Republic of Ireland and will be commencing early 2011. Diabetes specialist nurses and diabetes specialist dieticians are also being recruited to deliver Structured Patient Education to children and young people. Structured Patient Education will equip children and young people and their families/carers with the practical skills and knowledge needed to enable them to manage their diabetes effectively on a day-to-day basis. This will be available from early 2011. Contact for further information: Emma Meneely, Project Manager t: 00 44 (0)28 3741 4377 e: [email protected] w: www.cawt.com/diabetes

Outcomes for Children The project is supporting four partnerships to work together with local communities to plan and deliver services so that better outcomes are achieved for children and young people. The groups are based in South Armagh, Fermanagh, Cavan and Donegal South West. Staff have been recruited to facilitate the development of the groups and to provide support during the planning process. All the groups are currently gathering and analysing information on children‟s outcomes in their areas. Participation Network is facilitating workshops to support groups with engaging children and young people in the planning process. The project website ( www.outcomesforchildren.org ) has been re-branded and data measuring children‟s outcomes has been updated. An event to promote the website and to launch the Information Management Model of Best Practice is being planned for March 2011. This will also provide an opportunity for the local planning groups to network and share information.
