At the beginning of September we welcomed our new Year 7 group to Causeway School. Looking very smart in their new school uniform, Ms Leung hosted their first assembly before introducing them to their new teachers.

At the end of August 2017 we celebrated our leaving Year 11’s exam results. The results for the new English and Mathematics exams were very encouraging with 62 percent of students attaining 9 to 4 grades in English and 55 percent achieving 9 to 4 grades in Maths. 60 percent of students achieved A* - C or 9 to 4 grades in all their exams. We had exceptional results for Triple Science and Spanish, with 100 percent of students passing Chemistry and 88 percent of students gaining A*-C grades in Spanish, of which nearly half were A* or A grades.

Causeway Open Evening 2017

Swale Sports Champions

Year 11 Post 16 & Study Skills Evening

Year 11 students had opportunity of receiving practical advice on revision, study skills and tips for the remainder of their academic year and beyond from Heads of Department during this evening. They were also provided with the opportunity of speaking with various Colleges and Further Education providers, to gauge an idea of the specific grades required to embark on specific courses for the coming year.

Our annual Open Evening proved a big draw as usual, with the whole school being opened to prospective new students and parents to come and see what we have to offer. Pictured are some of the amazing activities our talented teachers had set up in their classrooms. The science department stunned our visitors with a host of science experiments, while our food technology rooms buzzed with great baking skills of some of our junior students. The Technology department offered Year 6 students the chance to make their own creations while the Art department gave classes on how to life draw.

Creative Arts Student Leaders Chosen

Congratulations were given to the students who had been nominated by their teachers to be Creative Arts Student Leaders. These students have worked hard in the creative subjects and have supported, and represented the department on many occasions. We are so pleased to be able to reward them for their efforts.

The Eastbourne School Partnership Gala

Year 9 & 10 students travelled to Kent to compete in the first ever Swale Academy Trust sporting event. Causeway competed against seven other schools in two hard fought but very sporting tournaments. In very tough games our girls came away in fourth place while the boys came away champions bringing home an impressive trophy.

20 students performed in front of 300 people at Eastbourne School's Partnership Gala Concert; what an achievement! The school choir 'Causeway Voices' sang two songs and the school band played a medley. All the schools and colleges in Eastbourne took part, each performing three musical numbers. It was a fantastic night full of talent and our students were no exception.

Secret Catch Project Launches

We were pleased to announce the launch of our first Heritage project called ‘Secret Catch’ led by Community Stuff and funded by the Heritage Lottery. Secret Catch is a local project which aims to find out about the history of Eastbourne’s fishing industry. The project involves staff and students and was based at Causeway School every Wednesday until March 2018. Our students received training, undertook research, conducted interviews and created oral histories which formed part of the final exhibition at Causeway School in the Spring.

Causeway Primary School Winter Sports Festival

Causeway School held their annual Primary School Sports Festival this month. A range of sporting activities took place including trampolining, netball, badminton and basketball to prospective Year 6 students from across Eastbourne’s Primary Schools. The main aim of the afternoon was to allow older students to practice their leadership skills, planning and delivery, communication and motivation. It was great to welcome our Primary Schools ensuring they had an action packed energetic sporting afternoon.

We were pleased to announce that four of our students were selected for the Sussex Schools Football squads after extensive trials.

On Tuesday 10th October 16 Causeway students participated in the Eastbourne School Cross Country Championships. They ran distances ranging from 1 mile for the Year 7 girls up to 3 miles for the Year 10/11 boys. We had a few amazing results with Leoni Coleiro-Swain placed 12th for the Year 8/9 girls race and Niamh Redington placed 23rd in the same race. The boys put up some strong performances too with Corby Ovenden coming in 34th in the Year 8/9 boys race, quickly followed by Leo Olujobi, Ethan Smith, Jason Hughes and Adrian Nakasila. They were placed 7th overall. The Year 10/11 boys soon followed and we had an outstanding performance from Bradley Willis who pushed hard the whole was placed a fantastic 9th.

Causeway Take To The Airwave

Football News Netball, Basketball & Tennis

Causeway school hosted the area Badminton finals and the 3 v 3 Basketball competitions. Both of these events saw first class school sport being played at Causeway with a hard fought but brilliant sporting nature between the competitors from each school. Also this month, Causeway met with the Lawn Tennis association and they confirmed that the school will be part of their School of Tennis Programme which was launched at Loughborough University in the last week of term 2. This will see grants being provided for resources for Tennis in school, a dedicated level 3 tennis coach attached to Causeway, Tennis ambassadors within the student body and opportunists for community involvement in the sport. The Year 7 girls netball team gave an outstanding performance during November against the Eastbourne Academy. The team came home victorious after a great win thanks to their coach Lesley Pyle, who provided a high standard of training in previous weeks.

On Thursday 16th November Causeway once again took to the airwaves as part of Eastbourne Youth Ra-dio. A group of 10 excited, but nervous, Year 7 students had prepared a show packed with their thoughts about the school so far as well as jokes and movie reviews. We also took three budding musicians from Year 10 who regaled us, Eastbourne and potentially a global audience with their excellent renditions of the indie rock classics, Smells Like Teen Spirit and Song 2. The show also featured a number of recordings from the school choir, Year 7 music lessons and a feature on this years school production, The Wizard Of Oz.

This month has seen our Year 10 team reach the last 16 schools in the country with two very hard fought matches against Buckswood and Claremnot. These matches were very competitive with each school having their own football academy and the standard of football on show was of the highest quality. A last minute extra time goal by Charlie Vella against Buckswood saw Causeway reach the last 32 where a single Leo Baccino goal was enough to see off Claremont 1-0. The Year 11 team were very unlucky to lose by the odd goal in their last 32 National Cup fixture with Claremont, the team worked extremely hard and a brace from Matt Astle always left them with a chance, but a controversial penalty 3 minutes from the end saw their cup hopes end in their final year.

East Sussex Schools’ Prom 2017

During November the school's choir 'Causeway Voices' had the privilege of performing as part of the East Sussex School's Prom. 20 Causeway students performed alongside schools from across the county to a sold out De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill.

Christmas Dinner

Christmas Panto

Students from all year groups took part in the Causeway's Christmas Carol Concert. As the mulled wine flowed and the mince pies were passed round, the audience were treated to renditions of classic Christmas favourites and modern festive pop songs. For many of our pupils, this was their first time performing as a soloist in public and so congratulations to them on their professionalism and their the high standard of performance throughout the night. The success of the night was a testament to hard work and commitment that our singers have put in leading up to the event. The show was well attended and we were overwhelmed by the sheer number of parents that attended.

Christmas Jumper Day

We took part in National Christmas Jumper Day with lots of our students and staff helping to raise money for Save the Children, students who wore a festive outf donated £1 on arriving at school, in total we raised over £400 for the day.

Causeway Sports Awards Evening

During the last week of term, students were treated to a festive Panto version of Cinderella which was performed by our staff. All Years were invited to attend in our main hall and everyone really got into the festive spirit. Carry On Cinderella was a modern day take on the classic tale and all staff really got into character to put on this comical masterpiece.

Thursday 7th December saw the school hold its first ever stand alone Sports Awards Evening. This was an opportunity for students, parents and staff to celebrate the successes of the past 12 months in lessons and extra curricular sport. The evening started with the successful netball and football teams collecting the trophies they had won this year. This was followed by the PE awards, sports men, woman and team of the year and then finally the awarding of the school sporting colours for the first time.

Year 7 Netball

Year 7 Visit to Hazel Court

Ambassadors Trip

This week our Year 7 students have been given guided tours of Hazel Court School. This is the adjoining school to Causeway and provides educational support for children with many disabilities. The students received a full guided tour with the Head Teacher and Deputy Head Teacher of the school showing them all the specialist rooms they have set up. They visited the sensory room in which they got to interact with the hi-tech equipment and also visited some of the classes and spoke with their students. Year 7 were very impressed at the work they do and many look forward to becoming play leaders within Hazel Court over the next year.

During January, those students who had been awarded the Ambassador’s badge - for modelling exemplary conduct and character over the course of the academic year thus far – were rewarded with a trip to Tenpin, where they engaged in bowling and laser quest. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day and a deserved reward for young people who are assets to the school, and an absolute joy to teach!

Our ‘SSBA’ Book Group students attended an author award evening at Roedean School on 19th January 2018. Participating schools secretly ballot on their favourite book read from the five contenders. This year, Chris Riddell, past Children’s Laureate, was in attendance, drawing characters from author’s books and pictures of authors themselves, which students found very entertaining! The winning book this year was ‘Paper Butterflies’ by Lisa Heathfield, with highly commended going to Juno Dawson’s ‘Margot & Me’. Jess Murray, Year 10, received the book tokens for the rest of the group: Jo Leman, Jack Jenkins, Emily Garner and Elisha Coates. These were given out for attending the evening.

Year 10 students attended the Oxbridge conference hosted by Eastbourne college. They heard from a professor from Oxford who read Physics and one from Cambridge who read Humanities. The students found it enlightening and came away with clear ideas around what is expected to attend one of these universities and what they will need to achieve over the next few years. Most importantly they realised that attending these universities is within reach.

Causeway hosted a Year 7 Netball match against Willingdon. Some of the Year 7 students have shown excellent commitment by coming to the Netball Academy training sessions on Mondays after school and this really showed as the standard of play was extremely high. At the end of the first quarter it was neck and neck and finishing 2-2. The girls fought hard to edge in front again and, following some great passages of play, we ended up winning 8-6.

Causeway Rocks up to the Challenge

Year 11 Mock Interview Day

Music Performance Evening

Hazel Court, Causeway and Bollywood

Causeway students took part in UK Rock Challenge for the third year in a row. Rock Challenge is a global performing arts event where schools create an 8 minute dance-drama performance on a theme of their choice. This year, Causeway’s theme 'In a World Full of Chaos', touched upon various issues surrounding our world such as, terrorism, deforestation, and homelessness. The students went on stage and delivered a phenomenal performance. All the months of hard work came to fruition as they wowed the crowd. The judges comments were very positive, they praised our soundtrack and the fact that our theme was extremely relevant to the world we live in at the

Causeway came away with 6 awards: Sussex Police Award of Excellence for Soundtrack

Awareness Sussex Police Award of Excellence for Video Performance.

Our Year 11 students had the opportunity to be interviewed by many local and national businesses who kindly liaised with us to send representatives from their organisations, not only to inter-view, but to inspire and motivate our young people in to think seriously about their future goals, whilst in an interview situation. This has also eased concerns regarding College Interviews, and added further experience to those students who have already had their college interview.

Parents were treated to a Valentines music evening with the Causeway Voice in February. After the popularity of the choir’s Christmas Performance our pupils worked tirelessly to create a showcase of songs all centred around the theme of ‘love.’ The show featured performances from all years groups and we commend our pupils for the supportive and positive atmosphere that they created. The standard was extremely high and some stand out moments came from Bradley Willis, Brooke Jackson, Robyn Winter, Freya Collie, Ellie Seavers, Melissa Thomas and Emily Wright. We were proud of all the pupils who took part and we were also very pleased to see a number of pupils challenging themselves to perform as soloist for the first time. 'Around the World' was the topic at Hazel Court Secondary

department this February. As part of this topic they have started a Dance project with some pupils from Causeway School. One lesson was 'Bollywood' and over the following weeks pupils will be doing a range of dances from around the world, including China, New Zealand, England and France. We are always very pleased to be working collaboratively with Hazel Court our co-located schools. Children from both schools enjoy working with each other and develop a wonderful sense of others.

Students were encouraged to enter the annual ’World Book Day’ Competition on 1st March. This year students had to design their own book cover and were free to illustrate their ideas as they wished. The standard of entries was exceptional, our winners were: Natasha Khansai 1st place, Emma Bishop 2nd place with Holly Graham and Tia Ewen joint third.

Swale Rock Challenge 2018

Causeway School welcomed the Deputy Lieutenant of East Sussex, Tim Cobb, for their first Swale Academies Trust Rock Challenge. The evening was a celebration of dance with eight exceptional choreographies performed by each of the Swale Academies Trust Secondary Schools from East Sussex and Kent including: Causeway, Peacehaven Community School, The Eastbourne Academy, Meopham, Westlands, The North School, Community College Whistable and Sittingbourne Community College. The evening was an opportunity for staff and students across the eight schools to share the outstanding work that is happening across Swale Academies Trust. It was a celebration of achievement and a great way for students and staff to learn from each other and appreciate the commitment and dedication displayed on a daily bases across these schools.

The Lottery funded Heritage project ‘Secret Catch - Fishing Families’ organised by Community Stuff, was put together to teach pupils at Causeway School the unknown history of fishing families in Eastbourne. The private view in Causeway School Gallery attracted many people.

The exhibition was put together by pupils and Community Stuff working with local historian and author Ted Hide, and was a great opportunity for those that took part in the project to display the research that they have been undertaking in this 6 months project.

World Book Day Competition

Our year 7 and 8 girls Basketball teams have had a huge amount of success since the start of the season. During the last week of February both teams played their third matches against Caven-dish. Both teams were unbeaten after victories against

Eastbourne Academy and Ratton before half term. Unfortunately our Year 7s came up against a very strong opposition team and they lost 22-14. Our Year

8 team however have still maintained their winning streak and won 44-22. Year 7 footballers reached the quarter finals of the Sussex Shield. The team recorded an impressive 1-0 away victory at Varndean in Brighton. The Year 9’s have also made the quarter finals of the Sussex shield after a win against St. Paul’s

Causeway School is delighted to announce that we have been chosen as one of 23 new schools to take part in the Tennis Foundation’s School of Tennis programme. The 23 new schools will join the 62 schools already on the programme following an incredibly successful pilot in 2016, where 94% of stakeholders reported a significant impact and radical overhaul of tennis delivery within their school since joining.

A group of Year 9 students enjoyed the opportunity of visiting and taking part in the recent ‘STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) Fest’ annual

event hosted by the University of Brighton in Eastbourne. Students had the chance to listen to and interact with film producers, local businesses within this sector, and to take part in physical experiments themselves. This gave our students an insight in to the potential career opportunities within these areas.

Our Year 10 students enjoyed their work experience week. They had a very successful week, with some leading on to part-time work, and/or the offer of an Apprenticeship in the not too distant future. See below some lovely feedback from one employer:

Trip to Italy

Twenty four students had an incredible three night residential trip to Sorrento, Italy. Students visited the iconic sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum where they were given extensive knowledge of the sites by expert guides. Students understood the different effects that resulted in the 79AD eruption witnessing the bodies that have been preserved as a result of the pyroclastic flows. They visited other archaeological sites and went into the picturesque town of Sorrento and around the Port. Finally, we visited Vesuvius which dominates the Gulf of Naples. Students walked to the immense crater rim and were able to take in the surroundings and the potential risk faced by the one million people living in the shadow of the volcano. Students were enthusiastic and inquisitive about the different sites, enjoyed the Italian food and were perfect ambassadors of Causeway School.

The Wizard of Oz School Production

Year 11 Prom Fayre Evening

Since October students worked hard to create an exceptional performance. Five performances were staged over Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd, all five shows were well attended with the audiences

enjoying the performances from the cast. Year 7’s took the lead roles this year, with outstanding performances from Aliciia Depper and Jill Sims.

Year 10 Work Experience

During April we held our first Year 11 Prom Fayre. We had a great turn out from our Year 11’s who came along to watch their fellow students present a fashion show, showcasing the latest Prom wear. Local companies attended, organising everything from suit hire, limousine supply, photography and flowers. We are very grateful for their support and for the prizes they donated to our raffle which was drawn at the end of the night. Food and mocktails were also served during the evening by students from lower years.

Big Futures Show

So Sussex

Thursday 17th May saw Causeway students take part in Outdoor Classroom Day aiming to celebrate and inspire outdoor learning, improve children’s health, engage them with learning and connect them with nature.

Swale Academy Archery Event

After a year of planning, Mrs Clay and a group of students set off for France to spend a week at Rockley Adventure Camp. Rockley is a great company with an outstanding record. The group spent the week doing a variety of activities on and off the water including: dingy sailing, cycling, raft building, Catamaran sailing, kayaking, windsurfing and swimming in the beautiful warm water. The group also got to visit some local towns as well as the largest sand dunes Europe. The Instructors over the week were so supportive of the students, they taught them so much but more importantly we had such fun in learning. Thanks to them and to Mr Casebourne for accompanying Mrs Clay on the trip.

Our Year 10 students recently enjoyed the opportunity of meeting representatives from local and national businesses, and ex-students supporting local Colleges, inspiring them in their future education and career choices. Students were very engaged with exhibitors, asking about qualifications and training required in order to embark on a career they are interested in. Students gained a wealth of knowledge from this experience. Causeway always looks forward to taking our students to this annual event hosted by Eastbourne Borough Council. This is a great opportunity for all schools in the area to meet prospective employers.

Outdoor Learning Day

SoSussex is an innovative family run company based in Sussex offering a range of outdoor activities, events, challenges and festivals, for local schools. We teamed up with them to create 3D Art Work inspired by the theme ‘Nests’. This work was displayed at the Elderflower Fields Festival .at the end of May.

As part of a programme of Swale school events, Causeway took 11 students to Sittingbourne School in Kent to experience Archery and take part in a friendly competition. Other Swale schools over the course of the week attended the event too, in the hope of inspiring students to take up Archery.

Over 50 students represented Causeway School at the annual Town Sports Athletics event held on Friday 15th at The Eastbourne Sports Park. Athletes competed in all events including track and field and there were some notable achievements. Our Year 10 boys and girls lead the way with many first, second and third spots in a lot of the events. Year 8 and 9 students also represent-ed the school well, also being in the top 3 spots of many of the events in-cluding shot, long jump and the 300 metre run, all adding to a great Sum-mer of sport for Causeway School.

As part of our new School of Tennis programme, students who are taking part visited the Eastbourne International Tennis tournament on 27th & 28th June. Some of our students were lucky enough to get autographs and selfies with top international tennis players including Andy Murray and Jo Konta .

Causeway Football Gala

On Friday 22nd June 172 students and 8 members of staff took part in Causeway School's first ever Race for Life. Students and staff walked, jogged or ran 3000 meters (5 times round the perimeter of

the field) mostly dressed in pink and covered in glitter! The atmosphere was overwhelmingly positive with students supporting each other throughout the race. As of time of printing, we have raised over £1000, with all money going to Cancer Research UK. Donations can still be made by going online to: https://fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/page/causeway-school

Causeway school hosted the friends of Causeway football gala, this is the fifth time that the event has taken place and this year was a huge success with over 120 players taking part. The Causeway football acade-my hosted teams from All Star Soccer and Chelsea in round robin tournaments across the age groups. The Causeway teams competed well and had some positive results over the course of the evening, a highlight being our combined Year 8 and 9 team beating Chelsea. Well done to all the players and thank you to all of the parents and staff who have supported the football academy this year, and to the staff at All Star Soccer for the coaching and support they have given our players.

The Causeway Rock Band was privileged to be asked to take part in the Eastbourne Carnival, which took place along Eastbourne's seafront. Carnival goers were treated to a selection of well known musical hits from the school's Year 10 rock band. The public loved their performances.

Year 7 parents were invited to a special Scholars evening where Mr Warner-Swann outlined the benefits that this programme would bring to students moving up into Year 8.

Year 11 Leavers’ Assembly & BBQ Year 10 Collage Taster Day

Creative Arts & PE Showcase Evening

Year 6 Transitions Day

Our Year 11s came back to school on the 10th to spend the afternoon celebrating with firstly a leavers assembly, students got to say goodbyes and watch a special goodbye video from staff. They then had an award presentation followed by a BBQ .

We are very proud of all the students who took part in the Creative Arts and PE Festival of work on Tuesday 3rd of July. For two terms in PE, Art, Music and Drama students worked hard in lessons to create work based on the theme ‘Beach Life’. At the end of the project we invited visitors in to view the work that our talented students had produced. When visitors arrived they were met with high energy Netball and Football tournaments, viewed the wonderful

art work, and enjoyed performances from Dance, Music and Drama in the main school hall.

GSUS Mobile Classroom Visit

Causeway proudly welcomed Year 6 students into school for a taster day at the beginning of the month. Our student leaders were on hand to introduce them to the school and also present them with their new House ties. We can’t wait to welcome our Year 7s in September!

Causeway were lucky enough to host GSUS Live for our Key Stage 3 students, in line with their Religious Education studies. Taking place on an interactive bus, the students have been grappling with topics including forgiveness, fear and rejection. These three areas have been highlighted as specific concerns for teenagers today, making it pertinent to encourage thought provoking debate around such topics. The GSUS Live bus tours the country, visiting a range of schools from north to south, so we have been very grateful to have the opportunity to enjoy the facility.

All students from Years 7-9 have spent a lesson on the bus, using a multimedia platform to reflect on how they can deal with problems that occur in their lives through the experiences of people in case study examples. Our students have been mature and considered in

their approach to these ideas. We look forward to welcoming back GSUS Live when it is next in Eastbourne!

We would like to congratulate Rachel Wheeler in gaining a place in the South Downs Youth Orchestra. After auditioning alongside around 28 other talented musicians, Rachel was given her place alongside just one other pupil from the South East. This is a fantastic achievement and a wonderful opportunity for Rachel who will now join the orchestra, travelling around the country performing in various concerts.

Year 10 students visited Sussex Downs College for a taster day on Tuesday 10th July. This was a great opportunity for them to experience college life. They were able to experience different skills from the many courses on offer at the college.

South Down Youth Orchestra Selection

"Students across Years 7, 8 and 9 enjoyed the opportunity of taking part in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths Sussex's 'Antweight Challenge Workshop' with students and staff from the University of Brighton's Compact Plus Programme. Students worked in teams, using a variety of materials, plus radio controller, receiver and servos and built their own robot. All students worked well as a team to achieve some great results.

Sports day was held on our sports fields on Thursday 5th July. Students throughout the day performed in their track and field events earning points for their tutor groups. Events included shot putt, javelin, discus, long jump, high jump, triple jump, 100m 200m and 800m and relay. There was a lovely atmosphere of support with students watching each other and cheering them on, but at the same time there was very much a competitive edge to the day! Sports Day finished with everyone on the field to watch the last event, the relays. Whilst the scorers were finalising the results the teachers took part in a staff relay which was won by Mr Boyle and Miss Paremain. The winning tutor groups from each year were 7S, 8A, 9A and 10E. The overall winners were 8A. A massive well done and congratulations to all students who took part in events and cheered their peers on.

Friday 15th June saw our Year 11ss last day in School. For many it was a sad day, saying goodbye to friends and teachers who have taught them over the last 5 years. Students picked up their leavers hoodies and were eager to wear them straight away. They were invited back for their Leaver’s Day Celebration on Tuesday 10th July and had their Year 11 Prom on Friday 13th July at the Cavendish Hotel. This marks the end of an era for these Year 11s, but they will be invited back at the end of August to collect their GCSE results which we are sure will be worth the wait they have been a phenomenal group of students. All of us here at Causeway would like to wish our Year 11 leavers all the best for the future and hope whatever path they choose will be a bright one. Please keep in contact as we always like to hear how well you are doing!
