CAUSEWAY CONNECTION Edition 255 27 November 2015 This Tuesday’s Ian Gow Cup Final at the Winter Gardens (see below) was the highlight of the week by far. Our students were fantastic. It is hard to put into words quite how nervous I was for them before they went on stage to do their 7—10 minute speech. They were clear, confident, informed, personable and funny! I was so proud of them. They have inspired Mr Dunlop, Mr Casebourne and I to try and set up a public speaking club. If any parents would be interested in supporting us please do let me know or email [email protected]. And, on a separate note, thank you to all parents who attended yesterday’s Parents Forum or emailed questions and feedback to [email protected]. Your support and ideas are hugely valuable to us. The Causeway team were Zak Bernstein, Jack Compton and Bailey Mackenzie. Great performance from the 3 boys tonight at the speech contest. Commended highly on speaking from the heart which I think is something our students do very well. Unlucky to come fourth in my opinion, up against some schools that have established clubs for this kind of thing. Just outside the medals but great dedication from all of them.” Mrs. Edwards/Mr Dunlop IAN GOW CUP—DEMOCRACY SPEECH COMPETITION

We also had the opportunity to meet a panel of highly successful Media personalities and ask questions. IAN GOW CUP—DEMOCRACY SPEECH COMPETITION

TAEKWONDO GRADING

Causeway School Larkspur Drive Eastbourne East Sussex BN23 8EJ 01323 465700 www.causewayschool.org [email protected]

The taekwondo grading is drawing closer and students have been practicing really hard. The grading is Friday 11th December. Marc Foxall has joined the group, since being chosen to take part in a Taekwondo session in school, and has managed to catch up with the rest of the group! Ellie Wordsworth has earned the nickname spaghetti legs for her amazing kicks! Harvey Kaplan really wants to take his grading so he can move on and begin to compete in sparring. To get their 9th kup, students are required to perform 10 press

ups, 10 punches in sitting stance, front raising kicks and four directional punching exercise with low block and middle block. They then need to do the same moves but in line work. Students are also require to learn theory such as the 5 tenets of Taekwondo and the meaning of colour white. Good luck guys and keep listening to your coach! Miss Cavallin

Tuesday saw the start of the inter house competitions for this academic year with Year 7 netball. We had entries from Churchill, Keller and Pankhurst. CHRISTMAS FAYRE

YEAR 10 PARENTS’ EVENING

Year 10 Parents will shortly be receiving a letter regarding the Year 10 Parents’ Evening. There is a section to return that will indicate what time slot you would like to attend. Please could you sign and return this by 1 December. Please bring with you to Parents’ Evening your child’s latest report from October and a list of questions you need to ask each subject teacher. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact Reception at the school on : 01323 465700. Thank you. You’re invited to our Christmas

Fayre on Thurs Dec 10 from 4 – 5.30pm! There will be stalls and games, hot chocolate and the chance to buy raffle tickets to win some fantastic prizes. We’ve had some wonderful donations of a hotel stay, a private pod on the Brighton Eye, £30 of toys and luxury food and toiletry hampers. Our students can also buy tickets for 50p each for the chance to win a massive chocolate selection box! Please come along to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support in our campaign to raise enough money for Mr Payne to shave his head!

SHARNFOLD FARM VISITS

We took 4 groups of year 10 students to Sharnfold Farm to interview the farmer about seasonality and why it is best to eat produce that is local and in season. The groups of students were very well behaved and learnt a lot. We also got to taste test some local and in season apples all the students commented on the difference in flavour between the different varieties. Mrs Prodger

CAUSEWAY/HAZEL COURT CAR PARK

ART AND DRAMA COMPETITION

WELL DONE! to Harley Mack in year 10 who is the winner of the

Little Red Art and Drama competition. Her illustration of what looks like Little Red Riding Hood off to do a bit of graffiti perfectly captures the slightly anarchic tone of the drama production. We love the detail on her converse boots. Her winning illustration will be used on posters and tickets for the production and her prize will be awarded by Miss Netschepir. Ms Barrell

We are very proud to be co-situated with Hazel Court, a Special School for young people with a range of learning difficulties. Many of these young people require specialised transport via taxi and minibus and have mobility issues. In light of these needs, unless it is essential, please could we ask parents NOT to use the car park to pick up students at the end of the day unless you have a blue disabled badge? This will create much needed space for young people at Hazel Court to access their transport in safety. Your co-operation in this matter is much appreciated. Thank you!
