PUTTING ACHIEVEMENT FIRST Lastly, please take time to read about the launch of Edulink. This online platform will really help to ensure our parents can communicate with the school quickly and efficiently. It will also give us the opportunity to let you know key information about your child’s school day including updates on attendance and rewards. Next term is our school musical. As many of you may already know we are performing High School Musical and I am very much looking forward to welcoming you all to this highly anticipated event. The school is also taking part in a dance competition called Let’s Dance. If you would like any information about these events please see the following pages or contact Miss Netschepir directly at school. Have a wonderful and restful half term and thank you for your continued commitment and support. Sarah Speedie Head of School CAUSEWAY CONNECTION Dear All There has been a real buzz around the school over the last few weeks with our students taking part in a variety of activities and academic opportunities. Our term started with a dance event, Swale Fever. This is now an annual event in which dance groups from the Swale Secondary Schools come together and perform pieces and highlight the talent and passion there is in the schools around performing arts. Our very own Causeway dance group performed a fantastic ‘retro’ piece that was full of vibrancy and character. The students had clearly spent an enormous amount of time working on this and at the end of the evening won the award for ‘Choreographic Devices and Structure Award’. What was wonderful to see was the group focus and togetherness that led to such a powerful performance - well done to all involved. A huge thank you also to Miss Da Silva and Miss Netschepir who coordinated and organized this incredible event. There has been a focus this term on academic progress with our Year 11 and year 8 students taking mocks. The focus and preparation of our Year 11 in this second set of mocks has been exemplary and over the next two terms we will be working with the students on continuing to develop revision strategies and looking closely at how we can support each individual to reach their target grades in the summer exams. Over half term the school has the pleasure of being the centre for the Eastbourne Music and Arts Festival. The festival looks to be a wonderful opportunity for our local talented youngsters to come together and perform. We hope if you are performing or visiting our school over this time you get a real sense of the community and pride that exists within the very fabric of Causeway. Causeway School welcomed six other Swale Secondary Schools in January to take part in the annual event, 'Dance Fever', hosted by the Causeway Creative Arts department. The evening was a celebration of dance with seven exceptional performances by each of the Swale Academies Trust Secondary Schools from East Sussex and Kent. The evening was an opportunity for staff and students across the eight schools to share the outstanding work that is happening across the Trust. It was a celebration of achievement and a great way for students and staff to learn from each other and appreciate the commitment and dedication displayed on a daily basis across these schools.

Causeway School produced a stunning performance entitled ‘Back to the 80s’ for which they picked up the award for best choreographic devices and structure. We were also lucky enough to have our wonderful school choir, 'Causeway Voices', perform too. In total two hundred and thirty students took part in the extravaganza and an audience of two hundred and fifty came to watch. Liza Leung, Executive Headteacher, paid tribute to the talent and dedication of the students and staff from all the schools involved, “The evening was a wonderful example of the collaboration that exist at the heart of Swale Academies Trust, providing opportunities which strengthen the experience for our young people and our staff”. Well done everyone involved! It was a truly wonderful evening!

Food Technology MasterChef's

During the past few weeks, Year 8 students have experienced life at University by visiting Sussex University in Brighton. Ever wondered what it’s like to be a doctor? Our Year 8 students got an exciting opportunity to catch a glimpse into the world of Medicine during the most recent visit and really gained a sense of a moment in the life of a GP. The students were introduced to ‘Anna’ who presented her symptoms. They took on the role of doctors and explored the patient history to discover more about what was troubling her. Their investigative skills were tested and they certainly rose to the challenge. They learnt how to take blood pressure, listen to heart beats and measure ‘peak flow’. All groups successful diagnosed their patient with Asthma. The teamwork from the students was brilliant to see and their engagement in finding out about the human body and how it works was superb. All the students that took part had a thoroughly enjoyable day. The University student mentors involved in the day are going to all be excellent GP’s and, hopefully, have inspired some of our Year 8 students to pursue a career in Medicine.

Year 10 – Diary Date: ESCG College Taster Day - 25 June 2020

This is advance notice that Year 10 will have the opportunity to attend a College Taster Day at

East Sussex College Group on Thursday 25 June 2020. Further details on this to follow nearer the

time. In previous years, the college has used an ‘on-line’ booking system for students to choose

the sessions of their choice for the day. As details become available to us, we will share these

with you.

On Wednesday 22nd January, 42 students travelled to London and visited the Tate Modern. The gallery has recently opened a brand new building and students were treated to seeing two brand new exhibitions. Media Networks was the first exhibition they attended and students looked at some of the ways in which artists over the past hundred years have responded to the impact of mass media and the ever-changing technologies that shape our world. They then moved on to the Living Cities exhibition. This display includes artists from Beirut, Cairo, Los Angeles, as well as Kharkov in the Ukraine, making parallels and exploring differences between the cities in which they find themselves. The artworks range from panoramic overviews to close-up images recording the minutiae of daily life.

Christmas Pantomime During the morning of our last day of Term 2, students were

treated to our annual staff pantomime. This year we broke with tradition and performed a very modern take on a classic which was Marvel inspired.

Year 9 Pantomime

Causeway Christmas Choir

Well done to the year 9 students who performed the pantomime, 'Cinderella' in Year 7 and 8 Celebration Assembly. They worked very hard in lessons to create their work and did a superb job performing. Their characterisation was brilliant and the whole thing was very funny!

Just before Christmas, the 'Causeway Voices' were invited to perform at the local Shopping Centre. Shoppers were invited to sing along as the school's choir entertained the Christmas crowds with a whole host of traditional and modern Christmas Carols. We were extremely proud of all of our pupils for taking part but especially our Year 7's as having only joined us in September they showed tremendous courage performing for the first time to the public. We received numerous compliments from members of public commenting on 'what a credit to the school' our choir are. We very much look forward to future performances with our talented singers.
