Causes of Paint Failure

CAUSES OF PAINT FAILURE 1.Blistering due to moisture, poor adhesion painting a thick coat at high temperature where the solvent gets trapped below the paint skin 2.Coating degradation of binder under intense or prolonged exposure to UV lights 3.Checking due to contraction of the top coats in chlorinated rubber paints in hot climates 4.Cracking as a result of ageing, brittleness and flaking 5.Fine cracks penetrated over the topcoat. Mainly occurs when the paint looses its elasticity and cannot expand/contract as substrate. 6.Crocodiling is a severe form of checking where the surface appears as crocodile skin. Undercoat shows through the cracks and gets degraded soon. 7.Curtaining sagging - when the paint droops under its own weight if paint thickness is more. 8.Dry spray – when particles dry before they reach the surface they form globules giving sandpaper effect. 9. Burned coatings – local heat can burn paint. 10. Failure at weld areas – if weld flux remains on weld it absorbs moisture resulting in corrosion. 11. Failure at edges and corners – paint shrinks due to the evaporation of solvent.

CAUSES OF PAINT FAILURE

CAUSES OF PAINT FAILURE

1. Blistering due to moisture, poor adhesion painting a thick coat at high temperature where the solvent gets trapped below the paint skin

2. Coating degradation of binder under intense or prolonged exposure to UV lights

3. Checking due to contraction of the top coats in chlorinated rubber paints in hot climates

4. Cracking as a result of ageing, brittleness and flaking

5. Fine cracks penetrated over the topcoat. Mainly occurs when the paint looses its elasticity and cannot expand/contract as substrate.

6. Crocodiling is a severe form of checking where the surface appears as crocodile skin. Undercoat shows through the cracks and gets degraded soon.

7. Curtaining sagging - when the paint droops under its own weight if paint thickness is more.

8. Dry spray when particles dry before they reach the surface they form globules giving sandpaper effect.

9. Burned coatings local heat can burn paint.

10. Failure at weld areas if weld flux remains on weld it absorbs moisture resulting in corrosion.

11. Failure at edges and corners paint shrinks due to the evaporation of solvent.

12. Failure over rusted areas paint comes off from surfaces if rust is present.

13. Peeling and flaking peeling is when the paint curls away from the surface and flaking is detachment from the substrate in flakes.

14. Exposure of primer to atmosphere if primer is exposed to weather then it deteriorates due to leaching away leading to breakdown.

15. Pin holing formation of small holes in the paint due to quick evaporation of the solvent or water in the paint evaporating.

16. Failure to dry may be due to wrong thinner, dirty brushes, over coating on wet paint, insufficient hardener, application of liquid part of the paint after the solid part has been removed.
