Cause and Effect Essay

Score! screams the announcer as a ball makes it through the goal. Everywhere people are laughing or crying depending on what team they were rooting for. Hours pass as they wait for the next big play to occur. They do not realize that sports entertainment may be taking up too much space in the American life today because it causes relationships to go bad, people to put more priority to sports, and addictions to the next big thing. The first reason is because it can cause relationships to go bad. There have been instances when hockey fans fight each other in the spirit of the fighting game players. Other instances include friendships and even families that have made a wall between themselves because of sports interaction. I have met people who are so involved in their own sport that they put others down for liking another team. People put a great amount of pride into their sports teams, especially, when they win and they find identity in those teams. On top of that, priorities begin evolving around the sporting events. Super Bowl Sunday is probably the most common game for Americans to watch. It has now become part of the tradition to eat early and then watch the Super Bowl. Others do not attend events or go to bed late due to watching a sport or being at a game. Millions and even billions of dollars go for the sports entertainment industry and people often pay several hundred dollars just to attend a game. The most important effect would probably have to be the addictions. Although some may not classify their activity as addicting they may be exhibiting those behaviors. If they are not watching the game, they constantly check to see the scoring and how well their team is doing. They spend more time watching sports than doing work or spending time with family and some may become disgruntled if anything gets in the way of sports. A more personal version is the playing of fantasy football or basketball where virtual teams win or lose depending on the scores of the players in real life. It is of a very addictive nature and time and energy are wasted in the fake world of fantasy football. Some use gambling in fantasy football and millions are won and lost each year by payouts on whether or not the team wins or loses. People are spending more time in an imaginary world of this football fantasy and hurt themselves. We live in an entertainment fueled age where every person feels the need to be entertained by something. Whether it be television, music, videos, or sports, the entertainment industry receives billions of dollars each year from consumers like ourselves. I am not trying to say that sports should never be watched and every person should stay away, but it may be taking up too much space in the lives of millions and can cause addiction, prioritizing problems, and relationships broken. A careful examination of where the priorities of life are put may reveal more about how the nation prioritizes what is really important.
