cattaraugus county arts council news Grant Awards Ceremony Feb. 22 The Cattaraugus County Arts Council (CCAC) is pleased to announce the recipients of the Arts Education, Artist in Community, and Community Arts grants for 2017 which are funded by the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by CCAC since 2000. CCAC administers these grants in Alleg- any, Cattaraugus, and Chautauqua counties through a competitive application process. Family Art Days Scheduled for 2017 CCAC’s first Free Family Art Day was a huge success! This past October over 250 parents and children filled the CCAC studio in Allegany to make Halloween-themed projects - a pump- kin painting, a mask and a spider web. The adults and older kids also had their own project to work on - painting on ceramic tiles with alcohol inks and fire! Moms, Dads and kids took this oppor- tunity to express their creativity in pro- jects that they took home with them that same day. This event demonstrated that there is a real need for free art events that serve the entire community, making art experiences accessible to everyone. So we are happy to announce there will be two Free Family Art Days in 2017, one in the spring and another in the fall. Put these dates on your calendars: Satur- day, April 22 and Saturday, October 28. We are also pleased to announce that Fox Financial will be sponsoring these events in 2017. WELCOME NEW BOARD MEMBERS PENNY MINNER & DENISE SCHNEIDER

Penny Minner of Salamanca joined the CCAC Board in the fall of 2016. As a CCAC Board member Penny believes that “the arts are a necessary part of our lives every day and if I can help make a difference in our region - I’m willing do my part for the artists.” Born in Steamburg, NY into a large, talented family of traditional Native artists, she has lived in Chicago, Columbus, Seat-tle and Cleveland. Penny graduated from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh with a B.S. in Communications Design, worked in the graphic design field for 25 years and is now a freelance artist. Happily married for 32 years to her high school sweetheart, they have one son and a granddaughter. Penny has many hobbies, largely influenced by her rich Seneca heritage – traditional bas-ket making, beadwork and cornhusk doll making – as well as watercolor and graphic design. Describing the arts in our region Penny says, “There is a vibrant art commu-nity in our region, diversity and growth has brought more people together and it is a great feeling to know that in a small way, I’m helping to promote artists on their jour-ney. Meeting some of our local and regional artists at various events is inspirational and motivates me to keep the arts community at the forefront.”

Also joining the board in the fall of 2016, an Allegany resident of 27 years, Den-ise Schneider was born and raised in the suburbs of Buffalo. She has been married 31 years to her high school sweetheart, Bernard Schneider, DDS and is the CFO of their family-owned dental practice, Family Dental Wellness in Olean. Denise attended Niagara University as a Biology major, then studied Art and Art History at Case West-ern University and completed her studies at Houghton in Management and Business Administration. Outside of her work, Den-ise enjoys spending time with her children and grandchildren, as well as gardening, reading, doing yoga and creating. She has been an artist most of her life working in oils, collage and mixed media. Her love of the arts made serving on the CCAC Board an easy choice for Denise, as she explains, “I feel the declining emphasis placed on the arts in our public schools has left a gap in the awareness of and appreciation for the arts. CCAC helps to close that gap. We all have an inner Artist hiding within and CCAC offers people of all ages the opportunity to explore that. I look forward to more oppor-tunities in the future to help support the awareness of the important work that the dedicated people at CCAC do.”

On November 29, 2016, CCAC joined nonprofits across the state in the first #NYGivesDay, part of #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, commu-nities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. We had a successful campaign with twenty-five individuals making online and direct donations totaling more than $1,640 for CCAC. Betsy Matz, CCAC board mem-ber and folk artist working in basketry and needlework, made a donation and said “the presence of a vibrant arts community makes Cattaraugus County a more livable place. I support the Cattaraugus County Arts Coun-cil because it supports and encourages our artists”. Especially toward the end of the year when it can be tough for nonprofits to make ends meet, these donations help CCAC to continue free programming like professional development workshops, gal-lery exhibitions at the Center Gallery at JCC and management of the community events calendar at events.myartscouncil.net. Exec-utive Director, Tina Hastings says “the gen-erous support of community members and businesses is crucial to being able to offer free and low-cost art experiences to a wide geographic area. Whether it is an oppor-tunity to create in the studio, a chance to attend an exhibition or the ability to attend a workshop that supports other small non-profit arts and cultural organizations, we feel strongly that art and culture are integral parts of our community”. We hope to build on the 2016 #Giv-ingTuesday momentum this year. We are currently looking at ways to build partner-ships with businesses and organizations in the area that will foster the spirit of philan-thropy within our community.

Bonagany 2016 brought CCAC and artist Robert D. Sader (“Bobby”) together. He was selling his woodworking at Bonagany and CCAC member Judy Speckman suggested he stop in at the Art on Main studio to see what we have to offer. Shortly after that Bobby placed and sold a number of his exotic wooden pens, a few wooden bowls and other items in the Art on Main store, participated in the CCAC Winter Arts Festival at Holiday Valley and currently has an exhibit of his large format photographs on display in the Art on Main Gallery. Yes, Bobby Sader works in two, very different art forms – woodworking and photography. Each of these pursuits requires an extensive amount of specialized equipment. In Olean, at the workshop for his business known as Allegany Woodworking, he has carving tools, a wood turning lathe, table saw, drill press, band saw, band sander, clamps, etc. His Cuba darkroom is full of the tools of that trade – an enlarger, chemical baths, developing trays, film, safelights, photo paper, control strips, etc. At one point Sader’s wood-working and photography literally crossed paths when he built his homemade large format 8 x 10 view analog (film) camera from scratch - out of wood – in the summer of 2014.

Meet The Artist: Bobby Sader, Woodworker & Photographer

Although he had been around woodworking tools his whole life - used for home repair projects - photography was his first art form. All it took was one digital photogra-phy class and he then signed up for as many photography classes as Allegany-Limestone offered. By his senior year, at the urging of his art teacher, he decided to major in art at the State University of New York at Fredonia and accord-ing to him, “It has blossomed into something I could never have foreseen.” College coursework introduced him to the magic of the darkroom. There, enveloped in the dim glow of red safelights, light-sensitive photo paper immersed in

chemical baths magically revealed the photographic image. Sader was hooked on the whole process. While at Fredonia, art students are encouraged to try other mediums and Bobby did some projects in wood, using tools he was familiar with, but making art forms, not home repairs. This ignited an interest in exploring wood as a sculptural material. Each time he begins a new piece, Sader lets the wood “speak” to him, letting it become what it was “meant to be.” With every piece he makes, he includes the information about the type of wood it is composed of. Sader continues to work in both mediums. He finds woodworking production is best suited to the colder win-ter months as his (digital) photography business shooting weddings and portraits occurs almost exclusively during the warmer weather. Bobby’s exhibit at CCAC’s Art on Main Gallery consists of contact prints from his 8” x 10” large format analog cam-era. Each 8” x 10” film negative is placed in a double-sided case which slides into the camera ready to be exposed. Depending on how much light is available, these exposures can take anywhere from half a second to 30 minutes, so this camera is used more for still life and documentary sub-jects rather than people. The images in the exhibit are a series of objects which have personal significance for him

Allegany Woodworking shop.

Art In The Park Returns to War

Vets Park Art in the Park / Taste of Olean will be back at historic War Vets Park in Olean on Sunday July 23, 2017. When the event re-located to War Vets last year, there was a huge turnout of peo-ple that came and stayed for hours in the park. The mature trees provided welcome shade as people visited the artists’ tents and the numerous picnic tables throughout the grounds and in the dining pavilion gave people places to land and enjoy their food with friends. It was one big happy summer picnic. The feedback we received from both the artists and the public was positive for the location, as well as the quality and variety of work on exhibit. It’s not too soon to sign up for an artist booth. The early bird reduced fee ends on June 18. Final booth registra-tion is July 9. Find the guidelines and application form on the CCAC website, myartscouncil.net.

Bobby describes two of his wood projects:

“This bowl is a wonderful large Eastern Red Cedar vase / bowl. It stands at 5” tall, and 7” wide. This piece came from the top of 7th street hill in Allegany. This, along with probably 20 lbs. of more logs , were going to become mulch, so naturally I asked if I could have it instead of them chipping it up. Being able to know that this beautiful log was grown right down the street from where I live brings a true sense of locality to the piece.”

“This is a pen that I made not too long ago that utilizes very small scraps of wood that come together to create a wonderfully patterned piece that is both stunning and functional. These types of pieces make fan-tastic use of all my scraps and tiny pieces of wood that would otherwise go unused, or else be thrown out. Utilizing pieces that others might throw out saves me money, and allows me to create beautifully crafted pieces that have a unique look, feel and story behind them.”

- including a candelabra, an antique sewing machine, a sailboat, and baby shoes, among others. At only 23 years old, Sader is not looking too far into his future. He is not interested in fame, but would like to be known for doing quality work. He left a part time job about a year ago to dedicate himself to these two vocations and is getting to the point of making a go of it. Figuring out the timing for production and schedul-ing which art shows to participate in is critical. As a one-man operation he has to have enough inventory to take to a show, but if he sells out, then he has to take time to produce more work in time for the next show. These are the growing pains of every artist. Bobby is very glad to have found CCAC saying, “You guys are fantastic down there! It is great to have some-one to help artists, with a place to sell and show work.” And the staff at CCAC are happy to be able to help.

Member Show

A wide variety of mediums, subjects and styles were on display at the CCAC 2016 Member Show in September. This show is a free benefit with CCAC membership held every other year. The exhibit require-ments this year allowed artists to submit one piece no larger than 16” X 20”. Guests at the reception served as judges this year. They voted on their three favorite pieces and CCAC Executive Director Tina Hastings announced the winners before the evening concluded. Miranda Turner’s watercolor titled “Stripes of the Wild” won 1st place, Judson Brown’s oil painting “The Reluctant One,” was second and Barbara Fox’s floral oil painting, “To Live With Joy,” placed third. Exhibiting artists included Connie Bahan, Doug Baird, John Balacki, Judson Brown, Charlotte Cappellino, Diane DeLarme, Pamela Delyannis, Karen Fitzpatrick, Wilma Fleming, Barbara Fox, Phil Hastings, Adriana Hernandez, Shirley Hull, Elliott Hutten, Myra Johnston, Medis Kent, Julie Mader, Kelsey Mader, Keith McKale, Courtney Mealy, Adam Miller, Jennifer Miller, Penelope Min-ner, Amanda Oglesbee, Ann Parker, Eva Potter, Carolyn Raine, Betty Runkle, Samila Sosic, Jil St. Ledger-Roty, Darlene Subulski, Miranda Turner, Ardyth Van Scoy, James Van Scoy, Regina Van Scoy, Pablo Veloz, Eileen Weishan, Michael Weishan, Mikel Wintermantel, and Carlyn Yanda.

This was our second year of wrapping some of the 5X7 artworks to keep them anonymous and off-limits from the first-pick ticket holders at this holiday fundraiser. After the selection time ended, we all got to watch as each person opened their brand, new artwork. It was like a preview of Christ-mas morning. We also had hand-made ornaments to make deciding what pieces to pick even more challenging. Thank you to all the artists who gen-erously donated their time and talents to contribute artworks for this fundraiser: Patti Rosenswie, Gloria Preston, Shirley Hull, Jennifer Miller, Kathie Bump, Anne Holi-day, Ann Parker, Mikel Wintermantel, Ellen Paquette, Allen Backer, Jennifer Godbout, Patricia Reese, Maureen Migliore, Eileen Weishan, Mike Weishan, Melissa Meyers, Gerald Mead, Anne Conroy-Baiter, Kim Mehta, Barbara Fox, Peg Bothner, Carolyn Raine, Penny Minner, Benjamin Chew, Karen Fitzpatrick and Darlene Subulski.

So Much Creativity and Inspiration in One Place! Once again the Holiday Valley Lodge was bursting with creativity during the Win-ter Arts Festival November 19th & 20th. Regional fine artists’ and artisans’ booths were full of one-of-a-kind gifts - original paintings, prints, photographs, pottery, jew-elry, baskets, woodworking and fiber arts. Many artists return to the festival to reconnect with artist friends and loyal cus-tomers. Ellen Paquette, a painter and fiber artist explains, “Artists spend a lot of time alone doing the work, yet we need those opportunities to see what others are creat-ing and to give and receive feedback from our peers. The opportunity to interact with the interested public, answer questions and have art-inspired conversations is what I love the most about events like the Winter Arts Festival.” This year’s exhibitors included John Balacki (painting), Judson Brown (painting), Evelyn Brumwell (fiber), Charlotte Cap-pellino (painting, printmaking & photog-raphy), Len Curran (jewelry), Pamela Dely-annis (ceramics), Bev Fehringer (ceramics), Marshall Green (ceramics), Karen Fitzpat-rick (glass), Elliott Hutten (ceramics), Myra Johnston (painting, drawing & wood), Tom Martin (photography), Laura McCormick (jewelry), Keith McKale (wood), Deborah Moyer (jewelry), Rose Nuszkowski (glass), Ellen Paquette (painting & fiber), Carolyn Raine (jewelry), Bobby Sader (wood), Greg Souchik (painting), Jesse Szalc (wood), Eileen Weishan (Fiber), Michael Weishan (photography), Carey Welch (painting), Maria Welka (jewelry & mixed media), Mikel Wintermantel (painting), Lisa Yohon (jew-elry), Robin Zefers Clark (painting). Several area businesses that support the arts donated raffle baskets. We encourage you to visit these businesses throughout the year: Studio 4 East, Four Mile Brewing, Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce, a knife set courtesy of Cutco, 2 season’s tickets to Olean Community Theater, the Winery of Ellicottville, Mager Mountain Alpacas, 4 tickets to a University of Pitts-burgh at Bradford Bromeley Family Theater event, and a special basket from the Cat-taraugus County Arts Council. The Winter Arts Festival is produced by the Cattaraugus County Arts Council with special support from Holiday Valley, the Ell-icottville Times and the Cattaraugus County Department of Economic Development and Tourism.

CCAC partners with artists, businesses, and residents of the Southern Tier to provide programs, services, and op-portunities in the arts. Professional development programs, art kits for children in need, administer-ing grant funding from the New York State Council on the Arts, stu-dio classes, free art exhibitions, and promotion of events offered by other arts organ-izations are some of the ways we work to make this region a place where people of all ages want to live, work, play and raise families. Now is the time to demonstrate your belief in arts and culture and invest in an organization working toward a positive future for all. Please take a minute to make your generous contribution so CCAC can continue its mission. Thank you.

2016 Solo Show - Wayne Claypatch

The 2015 Southern Tier Biennial (STB) Best of Show solo show, “Wayne Claypatch, Out of the Frying Pan,” was held at Olean Public Library in September and October. Described by 2015 STB Jurors John Massier and Bleu Cease as fun, weird, well-executed, nimble, remarkable and well-painted, Wayne Claypatch describes his paintings as “merging people, unique settings, toys, games, cartoons and old movies, all with my love for nostalgia. But beneath the whimsy on the surface, I am telling stories that have meaning for me.” Claypatch, of Owego, New York, received his BFA and MA from St. Cloud State University, St. Cloud, Minne-sota. In 1977 he attended a Fine Arts Study program in Europe and later apprenticed under Phillip Pearlstein. Claypatch has been in numerous solo and group exhibitions over the past 30 years. His work is housed in several private and public collections nationally.

ACCEPTING ENTRIES FOR THE 2017 BIENNIAL

Beginning April 3 through June 2, 2017 entries will be accepted for the 2017 Southern Tier Biennial. This juried competition is open to all artists, 18 years of age or older, who are currently residing in New York State’s Southern Tier (the counties of Allegany, Broome, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Chemung, Steuben, Schuyler, Tioga, and Tompkins). Accepted works will be exhibited at the Olean Public Library Gallery and the Center Gallery at Jamestown Community College in Olean September 23-October 27. All works must be original and completed within the past two years. Work previously submitted to the Southern Tier Biennial is not eligible. Detailed guidelines on how to submit work can be found at the STB website, www.southerntierbiennial.com/guidelines.html. This is an exceptional opportunity for regional artists to enter a juried art competition and exhibition. Each biennial is juried by new jurors therefore, the shows they create are different in tone and scope yet equally true to the definition of “a regional survey of contempo-rary art.” This year’s jurors are fine artist Thomas Paquette and Tullis Johnson, Curator and Archives Manager at the Burchfield Penney Art Center. In addition to inclusion in a four-color printed catalog, artists accepted for the 2017 show receive a $100 stipend to help allay costs associated with travel, shipping, and production. In addition, four cash awards totaling $2,500 will be presented: $1,000 to the Best of Show winner and $500 for three Honorable Mention winners. The Best of Show winner will also be presented with a solo show in the Fall of 2018 at the Olean Public Library Gallery with a four-color printed catalog, up to $1,000 for professional develop-ment (workshops, training, etc.), and up to $1,000 for show expenses (framing, displays, etc.). The Southern Tier Biennial is produced by the Cattaraugus County Arts Council, in collaboration with the Olean Public Library, Jamestown Community College, and the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation, made possible by an endowment from the estate of F. Donald Kenney.
