“CATCHING MEN” !
In today’s gospel reading we hear of the great catch of
fish that Simon (Peter) and his companions receive when
they obey Jesus’ command to cast their nets. The catch
is a sign from God. Filled with astonishment, Simon
acknowledges his sinfulness and begs Jesus to depart
from him, a sinful man. In response Jesus says to Simon,
“Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” !
This pattern is repeated in all three of this weekend’s
readings. Isaiah receives a beatific vision of God in His
heavenly court. Isaiah laments that he is a sinful man liv-
ing among a sinful people (confession). He fears that he
will die after seeing such a wonderful sight. God however
sends the angel to cleanse Isaiah’s mouth (mercy) so that
Isaiah may speak God’s word to His people. St. Paul re-
peats the same pattern. He received a revelation from
Jesus (on the road to Damascus), Paul acknowledges
his sinfulness and yet empowered by the grace of God
(mercy), Paul is sent as the missionary to the Gentiles.
Simon, Isaiah and Paul are sent by God on mission to go
forth and “catch men” for the Kingdom of God.!
In the letter to the Corinthians St. Paul not only recalls
his conversion and calling but he encourages us to
acknowledge God’s power working in our lives. We have
all received a revelation from God through the Church,
the Body of Christ present in the world. We have listened
to the proclamation of the Gospel. Through the Church’s
teaching we have come to believe in the Gospel message
of salvation, that God calls us to experience.!
King Uzziah in his younger days, believed in God, fol-
lowed God’s ways, was blessed by God and became
powerful. He then became prideful, fell into sin, was
struck with leprosy and died an unrepentant sinner. We
are called to follow the examples of Simon, Isaiah and
Paul. We may feel unworthy of the calling that God has
given us. That is ok, IF we are willing to acknowledge our
sinfulness and trust in the Lord’s mercy. The joy of the
gospel is that Jesus has already paid the price of our sin.
Retribution is paid through the blood of the cross. St.
Paul encourages us to embrace the new life that Jesus
has purchased for us. We are all called to “catch men” for
God’s kingdom. We must do our part. Let us enter into
the pattern we see in today’s readings. We have heard
the gospel, God’s revelation. Our next step is to
acknowledge our sinfulness (confession). Then we need
to allow the Holy Spirit to enter into our lives instilling in us
the humble confidence to do God’s work in the world.!
