CATHOLIC TRANSLATIONS OF THE BIBLE12-26-93

I have over a series of six articles shown you how we know that theSacred Scriptures are inspired by God, how the scriptures werepreserved through time, how accurate they are today after centuriesof copying, I have talked about the Apocrypha and Apocryphal, I havetried to impress on you the extent in which God has gone to assure usthat He truly loves each and every one of us and has left us atreasure in which we can truly learn how to have hope, peace and lovein our daily lives.

I pray that I have clearly pointed out to you how rich we really arewhen it comes to having God's Written Word for us to read and learnfrom.

Last week I listed most of the different Catholic Englishtranslations (51) that I knew about. As we prepare ourselves to readthe daily scriptures for this coming week, I thought it appropriateto share with you a list of a few more Catholic Bible translations.640 St. Aldhelm Portions of the Bible in Anglo-Saxon673 St. Bede Portions of the Bible in Anglo-Saxon1505 John Fysher Psalms1635 John Hawkins Seven Penitential Psalms1650 Anonymous (Manual of Prayers)

Seven Penitential Psalms1681 Henry Hare Paraphrase on Psalm 151700 Thomas Caryll Psalms1730 Dr. Witham N.T. (3 editions)1786 Alexander Geddes N.T.1792 Alexander Geddes Holy Bible1811 G. Haydock N.T.1825 H. Rutter Epistle of St. Jude1828 W. Curray Epistles to Timothy & Titus1897 S.F. Smith Gospels & Acts1920 Msgr. Patrick Boyal Psalms (2 Vols)

That is a total of sixty-six different Catholic Bible translationsin English that I was able to find in my book I had published. I havelisted these for you in order to show you that we Catholics have hadmany different translations available to us since the Reformation. Ofcourse most protestants don't know that fact.

Another reason I wanted to list these for you is that many haveasked me what Bible should they buy to read. It's true that most ofthe translations I listed are out-of-print. But as can be seen fromlast week's list, many are still available and will always beavailable.

I don't just have one or two Bibles at home that I read and usedaily. I have 1285 different English translations that I read and use.As a matter of fact, I have read from cover to cover 9 differentcomplete Bibles, 22 different N.T., 4 different O.T.

I won't expect you to have read that many, but if you use thefollowing weekly readings for a period of three years you will haveread most of the entire Bible through.

So why not start today? Find your Bible, dust it off, open it, findtoday's scripture reading and start. (If you need help, call me at693-0440 in the mornings.)
