Tel: 383 8625 Jesus instructs on discipleship In today’s gospel Jesus continues his instructions to the twelve on the nature of discipleship. We should listen carefully, they apply to all of us. Tomorrow (29 June) is the first anniversary of my mother’s death. Mum would be the last person to consider herself a saint, but in her own way she lived as a dedicated disciple. She was a donor in the building of two churches: St Columba in Ashurst when she was a young person, and over recent years Our Lady of Kapiti/Te Whaea Tapu o Kapiti – lining up at the cheese factory to buy the cheese which another parishioner turned into cheese scones for sale after Mass. Some can easily write the cheque for 100s of thousands of dollars, for others getting the money together to buy a couple of kilo of cheese ends, or taking the time to bake scones is a big step. Jesus loves them all! Tomorrow is also the feast day of Sts Peter and Paul. Peter, not especially if at all literate, described by some as a bit of a plodder, denied Jesus when Jesus most needed his mates, selected by that same Jesus to lead the community. Paul, well versed in scripture, recognised as devout, prepared to kill those who opposed his Jewish faith, selected by Jesus as an apostle, contemplated that call for ten years before being unleashed into the Christian community, and in his letters we see the intellectual capacity that still informs our faith. Like each of us they are a good example of the sort of people called to discipleship: ordinary people inspired to do extraordinary things – on the strength of their relationship with Jesus within the Church. There’s no record of either Peter or Paul baking a cheese scone, but, like my mother, they lived today’s gospel – they preferred Jesus their Messiah above all. We centre ourselves in Christ by asking ourselves: “what would Jesus do?”. Joe Green Lay Pastoral Leader
