Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 18, 2019
Vigésimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
Welcome/Bienvenidas Hna. Teresa de Jesus Quintero y Hna. Adriana Galay

My Brothers and Sisters, Today’s readings once again force us to think about the cost of discipleship – the price of believing in Jesus and proclaiming that belief in the way we live our lives and treat others. We find both warning and encouragement on this 20th Sunday. In the reading from Jeremiah, we find that because Jeremiah is faithful in delivering God’s word as harsh as it is he has upset and angered important people, the princes; upset them enough to ask the king’s permission to do away with him. Jeremiah is lowered into the cistern and left to starve to death. However Ebed-melech, a court official, convinces the king that he has been misled by the princes and is sent to release Jeremiah. True to our responsorial psalm the Lord comes to his aid. Our Gospel does not paint a picture of Jesus that many people are comfortable with. His opening statement “I have come to set the earth on fire and how I wish it were already blazing.”, seems so out of character. It is a far cry from the loving, peaceful messiah that we expect. He alludes to his crucifixion, and death as the baptism that he must endure. He then adds to our confusion by telling his disciples that he comes to spread division not peace. This division he speaks of won’t be caused by any act of aggression or war. It will be caused by disagreement over his teachings. Those who believe in him and what he says will follow him; the others will walk away. This difference of opinion, this lack of faith in him will cause the breaking apart of families. Jesus in mentioning his “baptism” is alerting those who follow him, his disciples, that the hate and mistrust that he stirs up in people will be directed toward those who preach his gospel. They will experience the same oppression that he has experienced. What are his followers to do? In the reading from Hebrews, Paul is telling them that there are many people, the “Great Cloud”, to emulate in being a disciple of Jesus. He encourages them to rid themselves of sin and persevere in the race, keeping their eyes fixed on Jesus so they too can bear the crosses in their lives. These readings are as meaningful today in our very secular culture where many have walked away from Jesus. Let us all keep our eyes fixed on Jesus who is the leader and perfecter of our faith. Peace, Deacon Bill

This beautiful monstrance was taken to Rome and blessed by Holy Father John Paul II on March 2, 2005, from his room at Gemelli Hospital. He consecrated the vessel speci ically to promote Eucharistic Adoration, prayer for priests, and vocations. It was among the inal items to receive a papal blessing by John Paul II, who was called by our Lord to his inal rest one month later on April 2, 2005.
