Membership Newcomers are asked to register so that we may properly welcome you into our parish community. Forms are on line or in the Parish Office. Also, the 2nd Sunday of every month is NEW Parishioner Registration. Active Participation includes 4 things: 1) Registration in the Parish for a sufficient period of time. 2) Regular use of the Sunday envelopes. 3) Faithful attendance at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days. 4) Participation in Parish events and service to the Parish.

BEARERS OF THE WORD. The Church has placed a number of notable feast days immediately after Christmas. The feasts of Stephen, John the Evangelist, and the Holy Innocents form a summary of the life lived in Christ, the Word made flesh. What do these have to do with the feast of the Holy Family, which crowns the Octave of Christmas? These feasts remind us that suffering will occur in fulfilling the

mission of Christ, and that we are all called to be bearers of this Word whose birth we celebrate. We also see this manifested in the lives of Joseph and Mary, both of whom took social and religious risks in obedience to the will of God, and both of whom were open to the word of God sent to them from on high. In these ways they prefigured the life of Jesus himself. Most likely, few of us found ourselves at Mass this past Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, but the essence of these feasts and the essence of the holiness of Joseph, Mary, and Jesus remain central, a holiness we celebrate today.

WE ARE FAMILY. On this day we honor the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. We all belong to families, whether born, married, or adopted into them. We all belong to the family of faith through the waters of baptism and,

finally, as part of God’s creation, we belong to the larger human family. Not long ago a story was reported about a woman in Manchester, England. She was retired from the telecommunications industry and lived by herself in a modest home. She regularly attended Mass in her local church, but was otherwise not involved in parish life. She had one friend, with whom she occasionally had dinner but never invited into her home. According to the friend, this lady had no birth family or family by marriage left. She spent all her days and evenings shopping. The neighbors would see her come and go but they formed no connection with her. When they finally noticed that her car had not been moved in days, they called the police. Investigating officers were horrified to find a house filled to the rafters with “stuff.” It took them two days to dig through and find the lady who owned it all—she was in a bedroom where heavy boxes had fallen on her and killed her. This sad story underlines what can happen when we do not have ordinary relationships to sustain us. Almost certainly neighbors and parishioners told themselves after the fact that they could have done something to help. We all know people whose families are deceased or who live far away. Some are outgoing and able to make a network of friends. Others, particularly the frail and elderly, are shy or fearful of bothering anyone. Isolation can have fearful consequences. Don’t let it happen if you can help it.

Living Stewardship Now If you know someone who is elderly, frail, and isolated, find ways to be a presence and a support. Drop a greeting card in the mail. Make a “How are you?” phone call. Go by with home-made goodies. Offer to run errands or drive to doctor visits or church. Take the family over and do yard work or other chores.
