"I came to cast fire on the earth.... I came not to bring peace but the sword." We know Christ as the Son of God, but we know Him also as the Way, the Truth and the Life. Based on His principles that He fought and died for, He is named also as Sign of Contradiction. He is humble of heart, yet not weak in His beliefs. Although He was not in favour of destroying the Samaritan village when its inhabitants did not want to accept Him in their midst, or when Peter unshielded his sword in the Garden of Gethsemane, He prepared a rope to beat all the sellers in front of the Temple and topple over all their tables on which they had all their merchandise. He protested when He was hunted down as a thief or slapped in His face when He was questioned during His trial. He was a man of steel when it had to do with God's justice without which peace, has no meaning. On account of His principles, He caused scandals and divisions that, in a sense, brought a 'sword' in the world besides fire. What He was saying was that God's mercy and forgiveness were being offered on equal terms to everyone, sinners and just alike. To the scribes and Pharisees it was a terrible blow because they have always believed that they were the superior ones. They resisted, but Christ did not back down. He did not go for a softer option. This meant open conflict with the religious establishment of His day. He called them, hypocrites, blind guides, and white-washed tombs. They in turn called Him a trouble maker, a man possessed, a breaker of the Law, and so forth. Therefore, He forced people to declare where they stood; for or against the truth, for or against the light. His words not only shocked but infuriated some. The words He spoke to the poor were different from those He spoke to the rich. The words He spoke to sinners were different from those He spoke to the Pharisees. We betray the Gospel if we reduce it to bland tidings to all in the same tone that blissfully ignores the

20TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - YEAR C

differences between rich and poor, between the privileged and the disposed. Such an insipid Gospel would not be a leaven in the world. As followers of Christ we should not be afraid to rock the boat if needs be. The Christian is a threat, a source of division, a light that shows up the darkness, and is resented by those who want to remain in the darkness. Because of His sense of justice, the Christian will oppose those who exploit the weak and the poor. By His transparency He will come into conflict with those who trade in lies and dishonesty. By His dedication to others He will expose the selfishness of those who look after Number One. By His openness and tolerance, He will come into conflict with the narrow-minded and bigoted. He should not be surprised if He has to suffer. Helder Camara in Brazil once said: "When I give bread to the poor, they call me a saint, but when I ask why the poor have no bread, they call me a communist." By imitating Christ we will become another Christ to so many disillusioned ones in the Church and elsewhere.
