Thank you for your interest in Catholic education in Brooklyn
and Queens. The Catholic academies and schools within the
Diocese of Brooklyn educate over 30,000 students in Brooklyn
and Queens.
The following guide for families was created by the Office of
the Superintendent ~ Catholic School Support Services of the
Diocese of Brooklyn. We hope that it will help to provide you
with a baseline in your search for a Catholic elementary
academy or school.
Please take a moment to read these beginning pages as they
will help you to understand and navigate the guide.

What is the difference between
a school and an academy?
One key priority of Preserving the Vision, the strategic planning process for Catholic
education in the Diocese of Brooklyn, is to transition all Catholic elementary schools to
academies by 2017. The main difference between a school and an academy is in the
governance model. A Catholic school is governed by the parish, so the pastor is
directly in charge. An academy is governed by a two-tiered board that is comprised of
a Board of Directors and a Board of Members. This image depicts the transition.
Academy Roles
The Board of Members is comprised of pastors aligned to the academy, the bishop,
and the superintendent. Together, they function as prime sponsors of the
academy. They appoint the Directors and ensure the overall Catholic identity of the
academy and its programs. In some cases, the ―Board of Members‖ oversees multiple
academies.
The Board of Directors is composed of lay people who function as the governing body
of the academy. They select the principal and serve as the immediate supervising
body. They are passionate about Catholic education and share their expertise in the
areas of: finance, facilities management, institutional advancement, marketing, and
public relations.
The principal is the instructional, educational, and spiritual leader of the academy, as
well as its chief educational operating officer. He or she also communicates directly with
the Home/Academy Association.
The Home/Academy Association is comprised of parents who have children in the
school. It serves to support and enrich the educational and formational endeavors of the
academy, and works to promote a connection from home to academy.
The teachers and the staff members fulfill the mission of the academy. The teachers
plan, guide, and evaluate the learning process of the students for whom the teachers are
responsible within the framework of the academy’s philosophy, organization, and
curriculum. The staff implements the mission through their assigned responsibilities.

This guide is divided into two sections—Brooklyn and
Queens—and is alphabetical by each.
The following subjects are a part of the curriculum in every
academy and school:
1) English Language Arts
2) Social Studies
3) Math
4) Science
5) Religion
6) Art
7) Music
8) Technology
9) Physical Education
Additionally, almost all schools offer instruction in at least one
language other than English.
Special subjects simply refer to subjects that do not meet on a
daily basis.
Please note that as comprehensive as this guide is, it is
only a guide. Its purpose is to form a baseline in your
search and it cannot provide all the information for every
academy and school. Some changes may occur. For
instance, some academies within this guide may have a
new board chairperson next year, or if there is a high
demand, some schools may open an extra Pre-K class.
To be sure that you have the latest information, or to
make any inquiries, be sure to call the academy or school
in question.

The teacher to student ratio within the guide is an average
ratio for grades K-8 within that school. The actual ratio
differs depending upon the grade level.
For early childhood grades, the average teacher to student
ratio is at least 1 to 10.
The early childhood section of this guide lists only whether
or not the academy or school has the following:
• Toddler program (ages depend on the school)
• Pre-K 3 program (for 3 year olds)
• Pre-K 4 program (for 4 year olds)
• Universal Pre-K (for 4 year olds)
Universal Pre-K (UPK) is a tuition-free program while other
Pre-K programs require some tuition. This is because UPK
receives government funding. For general information about
schools with UPK, please see page 8.
Dashes in the early childhood tuition chart indicate that the
program is not available. For instance, if you see tuition for
full-day Pre-K 3, but no tuition is listed for half-day Pre-K 3,
it means that the academy or school only has full-day
Pre-K 3.
SMART Board technology is available in every school and
academy. You will notice that some locations have them
equipped in every classroom.

Each school page lists ―Services and Resources.‖ This is
not an exhaustive list of the services and resources in that
academy or school. Rather, the list will inform you whether
or not the academy or school provides the following:
1. Early Drop-Off
2. After-school
3. Title I Services (These may consist of Reading, Math,
ESL, and Guidance services.)
4. SETSS (Special Education Teacher Support Services)
5. Yellow Bus Service
6. Lunch Program (This refers to a lunch program run by
the school or an outside vendor.)
7. School Food (Official lunch program of the NYC
Department of Education)
8. ESL Teacher (English as a Second Language
Teacher)
9. Crossing Guard
10. Guidance Counselor

Some schools offer free Universal Pre-K (UPK) programs.
Universal Pre-Kindergarten is a New York State early childhood initiative,
administered in New York City by the New York City Department of
Education. UPK provides four-year-old children access to comprehensive
early childhood education experiences that promote their social-emotional,
creative expressive/aesthetic, physical, cognitive, linguistic, and cultural
development.
In New York City, children are eligible if they are or become 4 years old by
December 31 of the school year in which they are enrolled in the program.
Below is a list of schools/academies that currently have UPK on
site. For more information about UPK in your area, please call
the closest academy or school listed below. You may also view a
map on our website: www.mybqcatholicschool.com.

Mission:
The Good Shepherd School Philosophy is
rooted in the belief that each child is made
in the image and likeness of God, uniquely
called to love, learn and share life to the
fullest. As a Catholic School, our teachings
are based on the Gospel message of Jesus
Christ so that our students will be able to
live in a society as responsible Christians,
aware of their obligations to God, neighbor
and self. Every student is encouraged to
develop as a total person intellectually,
emotionally and spiritually. Our school
community seeks to provide an atmosphere
where all are enabled to experience positive
interactions with others. This leads to an
increase in self-worth and self-respect and
growth to the fullest potential. School
activities provide a variety of experiences
upon which sound judgments can be made
and mutual respect developed. It is in this
atmosphere that Christian values will
become, for all, a reality and a life.

Mission:
We believe that education includes the
spiritual, intellectual, moral, personal and
physical development of the individual. Our
vision is based on the notion that ―Christ is
the reason for this school, the unseen but
ever present teacher in its classrooms, the
model of its faculty and the inspiration of its
students.‖ We are inspired by the life, death,
and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This
inspiration permeates all we do to develop
the Christian atmosphere present in our
school. We treat each other as well as our
students with respect and expect the
students to do the same. We realize the
strong foundation we provide is essential for
a successful life. Therefore, we foster an
atmosphere where learning can take place.
We foster academic excellence for all of our
students. We are cognizant of the fact that
each of our students is an individual.
Therefore, each student must be treated in
a way that enhances his or her personal
development.

Mission:
Ave Maria Catholic Academy is dedicated to
building an atmosphere of love, trust, and
care among students, parents, and staff.
We share with the family the threefold
mission of the Catholic Church: to teach the
Gospel message, to build community in the
life of the Church, and to provide service to
the Church and world community. At AMCA,
we are actively involved in forming the
whole person spiritually, mentally, and
physically. Students develop a positive life
outlook and self-image through the teaching
that all people are worthy of respect, have a
right to their dignity, and are special in the
eyes of God. Through the integration of
Catholic religious truths and values within
the curriculum, students develop insights
into the problems that face individuals and
society today. Students also acquire skills to
address these issues effectively. Through
prayer and in conjunction with parents,
priests and community, our mission is to
instill a love of life, respect for others, an
eagerness to learn and a willingness to
grow and follow the Gospel of Jesus Christ
in word and action.

At Sacred Heart School, we are one in
Faith, working together with reverence for
God and with respect for one another. We
strive to instruct, instill, and inspire each
other to be productive Catholic members of
society. Our students learn the values and
traditions of Faith as we incorporate them in
each and every academic and
extracurricular activity. Each child is
encouraged to discover and appreciate
his/her personal worth and value to the
community of God’s people. We strive to
provide them with opportunities to develop
their fullest potential and the ability to
honestly evaluate their own efforts and
accomplishments through daily challenges.
In order to instill Faith, we root ourselves in
Faith. In order to instruct about Faith, we
educate ourselves. In order to inspire a
Faith response, we strive to live as ministers
of His Word.

Mission:
St. Kevin Catholic Academy is committed to
the belief that the ultimate goal of education
is to develop the whole person. We aspire
to teach as Jesus did, focusing attention on
HIS message through daily living, by being
"truly kind and gentle to each and every
one". We follow this example set by
Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters
of Mercy, and first educators at St. Kevin
School. We are convinced that the
academic, social, physical, technological
and cultural objectives we hope to achieve
in the educative process flow from this
belief. Our paramount concern is to prepare
the children for their role in the global
community. We are a family rooted in the
Gospel values with a sustained emphasis
on living with Christ as our model.

Mission:
St. Nicholas of Tolentine School was
established to develop and nurture the
spiritual, intellectual, and social needs of the
students who enter our building. Each day,
the gospel message of Jesus Christ is
brought into the lives of our children through
a strong religious curriculum, service
opportunities, daily prayer experiences, and
an overall Christian spirit in our halls. We
believe in a strong relationship between
home and school, which helps foster our
Catholic spirit. Our students are also aware
of their role in the world and are cognizant
of the needs of the community and the
world around us. It is their devotion to the
Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy that
help them reach out to those in need.

Mission:
The Board of Pastors of Saint Stanislaus
Kostka, Holy Cross, and Transfiguration
Parishes believe that Saint Stanislaus
Kostka School is an integral part of the
evangelization of the Maspeth community.
This belief is rooted in the fact that Saint
Stanislaus Kostka School, in conjunction
with the three parishes, provides for the
education of the children in an atmosphere
of academic excellence while handing on
our Catholic faith and practice as well.
Knowledge and its application to everyday
life are the attributes in both the human and
the Christian wisdom that we seek to impart
to the students. Teaching as Jesus did, with
respect, sensitivity, compassion and
concern, guides the Board of Pastors, the
Principal, and the Faculty of Saint
Stanislaus Kostka School. Parents are
recognized as the primary educators of their
children, and Saint Stanislaus Kostka
School assists them in fulfilling this
responsibility by maintaining ongoing and
open communication with the parishes and
the school.

Mission:
St. Thomas the Apostle School is
determined by a firm belief that every child
can learn and fulfill his/her potential. Rooted
in our belief that Christ is our center, we
instill in the students that God loves us,
accepts us always, and forgives completely.
As Christian educators, we commit
ourselves to live in the spirit of the Gospel
and create an environment where students
are inspired to grow spiritually, morally,
intellectually, personally, and socially. The
school community of St. Thomas the
Apostle encourages equality and a belief in
the dignity of every person. All our efforts as
Christian educators are based on the
conviction that Christ is "the way, the truth,
and the life." (John 14:6)

Mission:
The mission of Ss. Joachim and Anne
Catholic School, founded in 1924 in Queens
Village, New York, is to provide a Christ-
centered learning place which fosters
intellectual and technological development
in an environment of love, justice, and
peace. We offer a total challenging learning
environment that offers both self-contained
and departmental instruction in a
heterogeneous class setting. In our
community, each child will develop his own
maximum potential necessary to become a
valuable contributor in society, with an
ultimate goal to love God above all and our
neighbor as ourselves.
