NEWSLETTER Summer Term King Edward VII School & Language College CATHERINE LORD POETRY COMPETITION Fac recte, nil time This year’s competition was on the theme of “Do right, Fear nothing”, the English translation of our school motto Fac recte, nil time. Students were invited to write a poem about an act of courage, bravery or adventure, and most chose the First World War - due in part to our school’s links with the conflict in which 92 former students died. The quality of this year’s entries was very high and choosing the winners was a difficult decision. Thank you to all who took part; we look forward to reading your entries in next year’s competition. The prize-giving event for this year’s competition was held in Upper School Library just before half- term with almost all the winners present to read their poems and a selection of other favourite verses. The two winners from each building were Stella Turner from Y8 and Rachel Haw from Y10; it was then eventually decided that Rachel should win the overall title. All the winners were given Waterstone’s vouchers as prizes and Rachel re- ceived the competition’s trophy, which will be dis- played in the cabinet outside the Assembly Hall in Upper School foyer. • Celebrating our most voracious

readers WHSmith Book Vouchers to the most devoted users of the school library

    Thursday 14th

May 2015, Lower School Library 9.00 am: A very nice man from WHSmith helped us reward our most fer-vent readers in Y7. Jonny Wilson, a representative from the well-known high-street book sell-er,came to Lower School to pre-sent six of the most dedicated users of our school library with their well-deserved book vouch-ers. At King Edward VII School stu-dents are encouraged to make good use of our well-stocked li-brary and many turn up regularly before and after school, as well as during breaks and lunchtime to peruse our varied collection of fiction and non-fiction. Our librari-ans are at hand on both sites to offer advice and encouragement, as well as keeping our stock of books well organised and replen-ished. They also keep a record of loans and provide information on how students use the library and which books are most popular. When WHSmith approached the school with an offer of a donation of £320 worth of book vouchers we could not say no! We will be using them as rewards for stu-dents who have excelled in Liter-acy in some way, either by their exemplary use of the library or by winning one of the literacy com-petitions which we regularly run. The first batch of vouchers went to the six students in Year 7 who have frequented the Library most often and borrowed and read the most books. These were: Zioni Amdissa 7L1 Maryama Musa 7P2 Hassan Nazir 7P2

Magda Hussein 7R1 Robin Cooke 7R2 Kian Moshiri 7S1

On leaving the school after the voucher presentation, Mr Wil-son from WHSmith comment-ed: “It was a pleasure to meet your students and staff and see how enthusiastic the chil-dren are about reading. I am looking forward to presenting an-other set of vouchers to King Ed-ward VII School for the excellent work they are doing in promoting a love of reading.”

Year 7 Trip to Murcia in May 42 students and 5 staff enjoyed a brilliant trip to the area of Murcia in south-eastern Spain where they were able to use their Span-ish in real-life situations and ex-tend their knowledge of the cul-ture. They worked hard, although it

    was a very different classroom

    outside in the sports centre.

They loved the time they spent

with the Spanish students in lan-

    guage and craft activities, danc-

ing to Latin rhythms and enjoying

the water sports together. In fact

    meeting the Spanish students

was top of the list of things our

    students loved most! The weath-

er was perfect for lots of beach

games and swimming in the sea.

The market was also a real hit,

    with some good bartering skills

    developed and everybody loved

the city of Cartagena with its ro-

    man theatre and beautiful port.

    Sketches were made from above

the bay and a local guide ex-

    plained some of the history.

Evenings were packed with activ-ities – music games, a fashion show with a difference and of course KES HAS TALENT! Some great entries, but Isla and Georgie won lst prize with a song written by Georgie, accompanied by Isla on the drums – no, no real drums but she did an amaz-ing job with a plastic chair and wooden stick!

    However, real drums were used

in a very loud and exciting work-

    shop where real listening skills

were needed and the end result

    was an amazing sound.

Our students were an absolute credit to us and themselves. We received praise on the plane and had both local Spaniards and other visitors telling us how im-pressed they were by them .

  • Foundation Learning fund raising.

The Year 10 Foundation Learning group spent six weeks working the DWP at Kings Court. The pro-ject was designed to take them through how to pro-ject manage and run a charity event. The group voted to raise funds for Sheffield Children’s Hospi-tal Charity. Over the six weeks they planned various events,

wrote letters asking for donations and successfully

ran the event at Kings Court. It was a great day

which saw the group raise an amazing £671.66.

Theo the bear and Sheffield Sharks basketball

player Michael Tuck supported the event.

The stalls the group ran on the day included:

How many sweets in a jar. Cake stall. Treasure hunt. Bean bag toss. Tombola and raffle.

Healthy School Week –March 2015 This includes our Annual “Crime Awareness Day”

for Y8, which starts with an assembly by the South

Yorkshire Police about preventing Gun & Knife

Crime, and then students are split into form groups

to attend workshops offered by local agencies on

such things as Alcohol Awareness, South York-

shire Fire & Rescue, Catching Criminals (CSI),

road safety, sexual exploitation and avoiding crime

through real life stories from ex-offenders and vic-

tims about how crime changed their lives. It is a

high impact day but feedback indicates that it is a

    very worthwhile day.

We also held a helpline lunchtime where local agencies came in to offer displays & advice about their services including the school nursing team, St Johns Ambulance volunteers, and SAFE@LAST a charity working with and on behalf of children and young people at risk through running away. There was also a free “Smoothie Tasting day” pro-

vided by school in collaboration with our Mellors

Catering team from fruit donated by a local supplier

and also lots of fruit kebabs were made to offer

free to students to encourage healthy eating. The

carrots, peppers & fruit kebabs went down a treat

but the consensus was that radishes were a de-

    sired taste!

World Book Night Celebrations World Book Night is an annual celebration of reading and books

that takes place on 23 April. (William Shakespeare’s Birthday).

It sees passionate volunteers give out hundreds of thousands of

books in their communities to share their love of reading with peo-

ple who don’t read regularly or own books. To celebrate World

Book Night around 40 students from Y7 & Y8 were invited to spend time in LS library. We

watched a live interview with Annabel Pitcher who wrote “My sister lives on the mantel-

piece”, and David Almond who wrote “Skellig.”

Each student was given a free copy of a book. Some got Annabel Pitcher’s book, and some

got a new local historical graphic novel about the Sheffield Steel Works, called

    “Stainless.”

  • Chess Tournament 2015

Chess is very popular at break and lunch time and introduces some students to the library who perhaps would normally be elsewhere. Playing chess can dramatically improve pupils’ levels of concentration, boost problem-solving skills and develop their thought process-es.

    Chess winners 2015

After a hard fought year of games the KES chess champi-onships has resulted in first place being shared for the sec-ond time in succession; the de-fending ( joint) champion from 2014 (Callum Rigney) shares the 2015 title with Dr Combley, who becomes the first staff member to get his name on the trophy. In third place (for the second time) was Mr Harvey. Callum leaves school at the end of this academic year and so it is up to Dr Combley to see if he can follow Callum’s example and retain the championship in 2016. We would like to thank all play-ers for their participation and extend our congratulations to the winners and runners up. We look forward to the emergence of new talent in 2015-16.

    World Book Night 2015

We have two successful book groups at Upper School meeting every half term. It is a great way of making new friends, sharing experiences and reading a wide variety of styles and genres. We are al-ways looking for new members so look out for our next meeting or ask in the library. To reward our readers, for the past four years we have cele-brated World Book Night. This year we were extremely lucky with 4 people successful with their bids – a total of 72 books to give away!! All Post 16 students were pre-sented with a copy of the book When God was as Rabbit by Sarah Winman and KS4 stu-dents received a copy of My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece by Annabel Pitcher. Lots of crisps and cake were eaten! Thank you to all who made the celebration such a success and we hope you enjoy the book. Keep reading!

The Winning entry in the Poetry Competition Just A Boy They said it was for King and country, They didn’t mention us. They said we were doing our duty, We didn’t have a choice. We didn’t know what we were

doing - Arms out in the dark, Feeling our way, guessing. And a shot. Bang. I was told once of a man called John. Normal, from the front; Come to think of it, he was nor-mal from all angles. Just a boy. He was told it would honourable To sign his name, So he did.

and what became of this man called John? Well, he stood with his new friends in the trench, Not realising that their souls and their being Would fade into the mud, Be trodden on and become As insignificant as the grass That once grew here. Imagine a boy In his pyjamas, fresh-faced from bed, Standing, looking at his fallen playmates. But after a time it was over. The ones who showed their worth were sent home, Like from a day’s work. So John came back and went on living, Feeling his way through the dark. Rachel Haw 10P1

  • Congratulations to all who were involved in the school production of ‘Frankenstein’ which took place in Lower School in May. Staff and students spent many hours preparing for the show, and their efforts paid off with a professional and entertaining production which was enjoyed by the audienc-es. ‘I am very proud to have been able to work with such a talented group of young people who are a real credit to the school ’.
