First Reading:
In this reading, God announces his plan for
all. He sends his spirit to his chosen serv-
ant who will “bring justice to the na-
tions.” This fulfilled, as we will see in the
Gospel at the baptism of Jesus.
Second Reading:
The second reading, from the Acts of the
Apostles, has the spirit of a public revelation
of God’s will. We hear proclaimed today part
of a larger experience that Peter had in the
household of Cornelius, a Gentile centurion.
Peter bears witness to the descent of the Holy
Spirit upon those assembled in Cornelius’
household, and subsequently orders the bap-
tizing of those Gentiles. Just as the Holy Spirit
descended upon Jesus and on the disciples
assembled in the upper room after Jesus’
death and Resurrection, the Gentiles too had
their own experience of the Holy Spirit and
Baptism.
Gospel:
Matthew’s version of the story of Jesus’ bap-
tism, which we read today, makes an editorial
change to Mark’s account of the story– a sub-
tle, yet significant change. Whereas Mark tells
us that the voice from heaven says, “ You are
my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased,”
Matthew tells us that the voice from heaven
says, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I
am well pleased”. In Mark’s account of the
Gospel, God’s voice and message are a private
revelation between Jesus and God. In Mat-
thew’s account, God’s voice and message are a
public revelation for all to bear witness.
