LITURGY OF THE HOURS

MIDDAY PRAYER

We are praying together Midday Prayer on Monday

through Friday at Noon just prior to the 12:05 Mass. All

are welcome to pray together.

ASH WEDNESDAY MASS TIMES AND

GUIDELINES FOR LENT

This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent.

Masses, with ashes distribution are at 12:05 and 7:00

PM upstairs in the main church.

The following is a list of Guidelines to help Catholics

observe this special season of prayer, penance and works of

charity.

· Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, in particular, are the

most important penitential days of the liturgical year.

They are days of both fast and abstinence. All Fridays

in Lent are days of abstinence.

· The rule of fasting states that only one full meal a day

can be taken. Two small meals, “sufficient to maintain

strength”, are allowed, but together should not equal

another full meal. Eating between meals breaks the

fast, but drinking liquids does not. The rule of fasting

obliges all Catholics from 18 to 59.

· Abstinence refers to the eating of meat. The common

estimation of the community is used to determine what

falls under the category of meat. The rule of

abstinence binds all Catholics 14 years or older.

· The substantial observance of the laws of fast and

abstinence is a serious obligation.

· Self-imposed fasting on the other weekdays of Lent is

recommended. Abstinence on all Fridays of the year is

also highly recommended.

· Parents and teachers should see to it that, even those who

are not bound by the laws of fast and abstinence because of

age, are to be brought up in an atmosphere that is

conducive to a sense of penance.

ASH WEDNESDAY SPECIAL COLLECTION

There will be a special collection on Ash Wednesday to

support Vermont Catholic Charities. This agency provides

financial and emotional support to individuals and families

throughout Vermont. These services include: Counseling,

Emergency Aid, Prison Ministry, Project Rachel and

Residential Care Homes and the Bishop DeGoesbriand

Grants for Human Advancement. These grants are

awarded to Vermont non-profit organizations which are

making a difference in the daily lives of people living in

their communities. Please know that every gift-whatever

the size-makes a difference. Thank you for your

generosity.

CONFESSIONS DURING LENT

Confessions will be available during Lent after all the

weekend Masses. These are in addition to our regularly

scheduled times.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS

Fr. Harlow will lead the Stations of the Cross each Friday

evening during Lent at 7:00 PM in the upstairs church.

Prayer cards with the Stations of the Cross are available as

a way of meditating on the Stations during the week as

well. Please make attendance a priority.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

February 23, 2020 - Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Leviticus 19: 1-2, 17-18 Love your neighbor as yourself.

Psalm 103: “The Lord is kind and merciful.”

1 Corinthians 3:16-23 “God catches the wise in their own

ruses.”

Matthew 5: 38-48 Love your enemies.

In the first line of the first reading we hear God tell Moses,

“Be holy, for I, the LORD, your God, am holy.” Then in

the last line of the Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples, “Be

perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.” How’s

that for a challenge? Not only are we told to be holy, we

are told, to be perfect! The truth is that we can be neither

without God’s help. Listening to today’s readings, note

how Father, Son, and Holy Spirit can perfect in us their

earthly dwelling.
