A SERVICE REMEMBERING THOSE WHO HAVE DIED
Before the service, the Cathedral Organist, Leigh Askew will play Dirge for the Funeral Service of Lord Nelson in 1806 by Thomas Attwood (1783-1856).
Introduction
We come today to remember with thankfulness those we have known and loved who have died. We give thanks for all that they have meant to us. We come seeking to learn of God’s love and to open our lives to the help and strength that he can give us as we continue on the journey of life without them. We pray for ourselves and all who mourn that they would be comforted.
Hymn
Drop Drop Slow Tears Sung by Lyndell Allen accompanied by Leigh Askew Eternal God and Father, we praise you that you have made people to share life together and to reflect your glory in the world. We thank you now for those whom we come to remember today, for all that we saw of your goodness and love in their lives and for all that they have meant to us. As we too journey towards death may we do so in the company of Jesus, who came to share our life that we might share the life of eternity. To him be glory with you and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. AMEN.

JS Bach BWV106 Part 1
A Bible Reading: Romans 8: 31(b)-39 A Psalm: Psalm 139 1-11 A Bible Reading: Rev 21: 1-7 An Address The Rt Rev’d Garry Weatherill JS Bach BWV106 Part 2
Affirmation of Faith
Let us affirm the good news we have received, in which we stand, through which we are saved and which we hand on to others. Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures; he was buried; he was raised to life on the third day in accordance with the scriptures; afterwards he appeared to his followers, and to all the apostles: this we have received, and this we believe. Amen.

Remembering with Thanksgiving
God of grace and glory, we come to remember especially before you today … Amen. (The names of those to be remembered are read aloud, while the organ plays Adagio for Strings, Op. 11 by Samuel Barber 1910-1981 Arranged for organ by William Strickland 1914-1991) We thank you for giving them to us to know and to love as companions in our pilgrimage on earth. In your boundless compassion console those who mourn. Grant us that we may see in death the gate of everlasting life and continue our course on earth in faith, through Jesus Christ our Lord, the Life and the Resurrection of all who put their trust in him. AMEN. God, our Father, we thank you that you sent your Son Jesus Christ to die for us and rise again. His cross declares your love to be without limit; his resurrection, that death our last enemy is doomed. By his victory we are assured of the promise that you will never leave us or forsake us; that neither death nor life, nor things present nor things to come, can separate us from your love in Christ Jesus our Lord. AMEN.

God of mercy, Lord of life, you have made us in your image to reflect your truth and light: we give you thanks for those whom we remember today
for the grace and mercy they received from you,
for all that was good in their lives,
for the memories we treasure today.
AMEN.
We thank you for all who through your grace have lived according to your will and are now at rest. May their good example encourage and guide us all the days of our life. Meet us in our sadness And fill our hearts with praise and thanksgiving. AMEN.
We sum up our prayers in the words that Jesus taught us:
Our father …
JS Bach BWV106 Part 3
Blessing: The Lord God almighty is our Father: he loves us and tenderly
cares for us.
The Lord Jesus Christ is our Saviour: he has redeemed us and
will defend us to the end.
The Lord, the Holy Spirit is among us: he will lead us in God’s
holy way.
To God almighty, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit: be praise and
glory today and for ever. Amen.
Postlude: Albinoni Adagio by Remo Gizotto 1910-1998

Translation
God’s Time is the Very Best Time BWV106
Part 1
God's time is the very best time.
In him we live, move and are, so long as he wills.
In him we die at the right time, when he wills
Ah Lord, teach us to think
that we must die
so that we become wise
Put your house in order
for you will die
and not remain living.
It is the old covenant:
Man, you must die!
Yes, come, lord Jesus. come !
Part 2
Into your hands I commit my spirit;
you have redeemed me, Lord, you faithful God
Today you will be with me in paradise.
With peace and joy I travel on
in God's will,
my heart and mind
are confident
As God has promised me:
death has become my sleep
Part 3
Glory, praise, honour and majesty
be given to you God father and son,
to the Holy Spirit by name!
God's strength
make us victorious
through Jesus Christ. Amen

For Your Prayers
Prayer for a new Dean
Bountiful God, give to this Cathedral a faithful pastor who will faithfully speak your word and minister your sacraments; an encourager who will equip your people for ministry and enable us to fulfil our calling. Give to those who will choose, wisdom, discernment and patience, and to us give warm and generous hearts, for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.
