SACRED MUSIC!
Cathedral Basilica Choir Music Notes!!!!!! !!
This weekend the Cathedral Choir sings the offertory selection, “I Am the True Vine” by noted British composer, Peter Aston. The text of this beautiful multi!part choral work is drawn from the Gospel of John, which is proclaimed today. The Cathedral Choir sings works, oftentimes drawn from the text of the readings, and aspires to make more meaningful and lasting, the words proclaimed in the readings, through music. Additionally, The cantors and Cathedral Choir prepare the “propers” which are directly linked to the messages proclaimed in the readings. Likewise, the hymn texts, particularly the Entrance Hymn, draws the worshipper in the pews, into proclaiming the teachings of the weekly liturgy. The 20+ voices of the Cathedral Choir rehearse weekly and admit singers on an audition!basis. The Cathedral Choir includes staff singers and volunteers from parish or who maintain a parish membership elsewhere but who choose to be part of this ministry. We have continued to welcome new singers with wonderful skill!sets into the chorus. We are currently seeking to fill a “Bass Section Leader” staff position. A job description is posted on the Cathedral Basilica’s website. For information about this position or to audition for the Cathedral Choir, contact the director of Sacred Music, Phil Bordeleau, at [email protected], or speak to him after the 10:30 Mass.
!
CONTEMPORARY !MUSIC NOTES!
!!
The 6:30 p.m. Choir, under the direction of Eric Brandenberg sings weekly at our evening Mass. The inclusion of a quartet of our singers from the professional staff singers at 3 masses a month has been a regular feature of this choir since Advent. !!We encourage more people to join forces with the Choir of this liturgy as both contemporary hymns offered in a refrain/antiphon style, and Catholic Contemporary Classic Songs which are featured in the music of this liturgy. Please speak with Eric after Mass if you have either instrumental or vocal skills. !

Bosetti Concert News…
This weekend, the Bosetti Free Sunday Afternoon Concert series will feature the renown “Vittoria Ensemble” under the direction of Rick Wheeler. This chamber choir sings music of Catholic origins, from chant to rich multipart motets. Though typically drawing repertoire from the golden era of Renaissance polyphony, this concert will feature newly composed music dedicated to the pope by Polish composer, Dr. Peter Kwasniewski. Plan to hear this breath!taking ensemble as they present “Missa Honorificentia Populia Nostri” and Two Motets, by Dr. Kwasiewski.
The Bosetti Sunday afternoon concerts are free and open to the community at no charge. A free!will offering is collected. A reception follows in the Cathedral Room in the lower level of the Cathedral. !

SPIRITUAL FORMATION!
Cathedral’s “After Mass” !!
Religious Education Program for Winter/Spring, 2018.! !We will be drawing from two programs for our Winter and Spring program. Each focuses on important saints and people in the history of the Church leading up to Modern Times. Bishop Robert Barron has produced additions to his Catholicism series with Pivotal Players, saints and important writers and artists who have contributed to the universality of the Catholic Church. The other program is from Dr. Christopher Blum of the Augustine Institute entitled Great Reformers. In this series, Dr. Blum focuses on saints who lived in the turbulent 16th and 17th Centuries as Europe reeled from the effects of Protestantism. A further dynamic of these sessions will be to look at how secular and scientific innovations brought skepticism into the realm of faith in Jesus Christ and the Church. The calendar of sessions is listed below. Beginning the weekend of the 20th!21st of January, the showing of these 30 minutes videos will begin within 10 minutes after weekend masses have concluded. We will meet in the Cathedral Room (newly renovated church basement). There is no charge for this, although you will have the opportunity to order 2 study guides at $30 each if you desire. As before, a fifteen minute discussion of the major theme (s) of each video and the saint or person it presents will follow.!!
