Why do we FEAR taking RISKS in our SPIRITUAL LIFE?

Our FEAR can be based on EXPECTATIONS … those we have OF OURSELF or those others have OF US. Ei-ther way, these EXPECTATIONS shape our RESPONSE to Spiritual Risks...our ability to SAY YES TO THE UNKNOWN.

Our FEAR can be based on a LACK OF BALANCE in our life between what is OF GOD and what is OF THE WORLD. The KNOWN OF THE PRESENT and What I Have can provide more comfort than the UNKNOWN OF THE FUTURE and What I Can Achieve.

Our FEAR can be based on the PRESENCE OF GOOD AND EVIL in our life. An Ill-formed Conscience or Lack of Spiritual Clarity can RESULT IN BAD CHOICES NOW instead of TOUGH CHOICES FOR THE FUTURE.

It is the TENDER LOVE OF JESUS active IN OUR HEART that will determine the RISKS and their OUT-COMES in our Spiritual Life...and determine our ability to ask for MORE OF LIFE!

But the BOTTOM LINE is STARK AND REAL -- the Kingdom of Heaven is WORTH EVERYTHING and DE-MANDS EVERYTHING.

>What am I willing to give up?

>What is holding me back?

>What is the basis of my fear?

For some it will be WHAT THE WORLD WILL SAY about the path they choose. For some it will be THEIR PRIDE since what they have defines who they are.

But in most cases, the FEAR is driven by one simple issue...taking RISKS may induce a FEAR OF WHAT WE MAY BECOME!

In our Spiritual Life, TRUE WISDOM is TO LOVE GOD, to have an UNDERSTANDING HEART, and to EX-PECT THE UNEXPECTED!

Our ABILITY TO CHANGE is based on the following questions:

>How do we LOVE?

>How do we FORGIVE?

>How do we HELP OTHERS?

>How do we ENCOURAGE THE OPPRESSED?

>How do we ENDURE OUR TRIALS?

Your answers will determine WHAT YOU WILL BECOME.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Pray for Us

Monday-Friday we serve around 200-300 people each day in our breakfast sand-

wich line, food pantry, soup and sandwich To-Go at St. Elizabeth of Hungary’s and

Snacks on the Hill.

Please donate to help us keep these outreach minis-

tries operational.

Our St. Vincent de Paul So-ciety helps ~12 households each month with rental and

utility assistance.

Eighteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Abundance. I think about it a lot these days. Our friend Fred gave us a tomato plant last month. “What does it need?” I asked. “Oh, you know. Water.” KAPOW. Seven weeks later, the plump yellow fruits are climbing out of their enclosure. They’re taking over the porch. They’re mul-tiplying faster than the rabbits we find in our yard every morning. And they are so, so delicious. (The tomatoes, that is.) And all it took was sun, and water. Abundance is what we have all seen in parents during these past several months. Faced with the stressful challenges of having kids at home while parents are working, either inside or outside the home, the abundant love that parents have for their kids has poured out, week after exhausting week, as they engage their kids, and play with their kids, and cook and clean, and cook and clean, forever and ever, AMEN. The love of Christ is in such astonishing abundance that NOTHING can take us from it. Think on that. No violence, no virus, no eco-nomic collapse can take us from the love of Christ. His love is more abundant than all of that. Feeding thousands with a few loaves and fish? That’s the abundant bounty of God. I wish I knew how it happened, but I know that if I had been out in that deserted place that day, filled to overflowing with the Presence of Jesus, I too would have eaten my fill and yet watched the contents of the basket grow. Think of the love you have for just one family member, or just one friend. Is there anything that could stop you from loving them? That’s abundance. That’s God’s very life in you.

Saint Dominic

If he hadn’t taken a trip with his bishop, Dominic would probably have remained within the structure of contemplative life; after the trip, he spent the rest of his life being a contemplative in active ap-ostolic work.

Born in old Castile, Spain, Dominic was trained for the priesthood by a priest-uncle, studied the arts and theology, and became a canon of the cathedral at Osma, where there was an attempt to revive the apostolic common life described in Acts of the Apostles.

On a journey through France with his bishop, Dominic came face to face with the then virulent Albigensian heresy at Languedoc. The Albigensians–or Cathari, “the pure ones”–held to two principles—one good, one evil—in the world. All matter is evil—hence they denied the Incarnation and the sacraments. On the same principle, they abstained from procreation and took a minimum of food and drink. The inner circle led what some people regarded as a heroic life of purity and asceticism not shared by ordinary followers.

Dominic sensed the need for the Church to combat this heresy, and was commissioned to be part of the preaching crusade against it. He saw immediately why the preaching crusade was not succeeding: the ordinary people admired and followed the ascetical heroes of the Albigenses. Understandably, they were not impressed by the Catho-lic preachers who traveled with horse and retinues, stayed at the best inns and had servants. Dominic therefore, with three Cistercians, began itinerant preaching according to the gospel ideal. He contin-ued this work for 10 years, being successful with the ordinary peo-ple but not with the leaders.

His fellow preachers gradually became a community, and in 1215 Dominic founded a religious house at Toulouse, the beginning of the Order of Preachers or Dominicans.

Dominic’s ideal, and that of his Order, was to organically link a life with God, study, and prayer in all forms, with a ministry of salvation to people by the word of God. His ide-al: contemplata tradere: “to pass on the fruits of contemplation” or “to speak only of God or with God.”

The Dominican ideal, like that of all religious communities, is for the imita-tion, not merely the admiration, of the rest of the Church. The effective com-bining of contemplation and activity is the vocation of truck driver Smith as well as theologian Aquinas. Acquired contemplation is the tranquil abiding in the presence of God, and is an integral part of any full human life. It must be the wellspring of all Christian activity.

On Monday through Friday, our volunteers give out 20 bags of food each day at our food pantry. Each bag of food includes a tuna lunch, chicken noodle soup, chili, peanut butter, peaches, a bot-tle of water, a can of V8, a sleeve of saltines and a granola bar. Each bag costs us about $8.00.

These bags are accessible for anyone in need. We serve our neighbors experiencing homelessness and neighbors experiencing food insecurity.

For $40 a week, you could help us feed a brother or sister in need.
