Reflection How do you show that you are a follower of Jesus?

Jesus tells us that being His disciple will be very hard. Of all the things that Jesus tells us about the way that we are to live our lives,

what is the hardest thing for you to do? Why?

Jesus passed through towns and villages, teaching as he went and making his way to Jerusalem.

Someone asked him, "Lord, will only a few people be saved?" He answered them, "Strive to enter through the narrow gate,

for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough. After the master of the house has arisen and locked the door,

then will you stand outside knocking and saying, 'Lord, open the door for us.' He will say to you in reply, 'I do not know where you are from. And you will say,

'We ate and drank in your company and you taught in our streets.' Then he will say to you, 'I do not know where you are from.

Depart from me, all you evildoers!' And there will be wailing and grinding of teeth

Welcome, our new Director of Faith Formation August 25, 2019 Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Joseph Cathedral Basilica:

Parishes are dynamic communities of faith, worship, and formation. Each of us approach Jesus Christ in the context of faith, worship Him through prayer and sacrament, and grow in our relationship with God throughout our life. Each of these elements are essential characteristics of disciple-ship.

Consequently, parishes are staffed to facilitate spiritual growth and devel-opment. This month we welcome Nidia Fuentes to the Cathedral Staff as Director of Faith Formation. As Director of Faith Formation she will oversee the various formation processes offered here at St. Joseph’s Ca-thedral including sacramental preparation, RCIA, and various retreat and growth opportunities. (These processes are presently overseen by Susan Olsen who will be retiring later this fall.) Nidia has a rich history in cate-chetics and faith formation most recently ministering in multi-cultural par-ishes in the Diocese of Oakland.

This position is a shared position between the St. Joseph’s Cathedral and St. Leo’s Parish. The partnership benefits both parishes and presents few challenges. The catechetical programs in both parishes are similar and are offered in both English and Spanish. Sharing this position increases effi-ciencies, widens collaboration in neighboring parishes, and offers the op-portunity to better engage in these processes. Nidia will maintain office hours in both parishes and will be present to staff, volunteers, and the pa-rishioners.

Please join me in welcoming Nidia to St. Joseph’s Cathedral. Sincerely, Fr. Joseph M. Benedict, Pastor

Census Workers Start Address Canvassing Operation Starting next week, Census Bureau workers will start canvassing neigh-borhoods in San José to confirm and record addresses in preparation for the 2020 Census. This operation is important in ensuring that the Census Bureau has a complete and accurate master address file that will be used to mail Census 2020 information to all households. Cen-sus data determines political repre-sentation and federal funding for critical programs that support edu-cation, housing, transportation, so-cial and emergency disaster relief services. As part of this operation, Census workers may contact resi-dents to confirm address infor-mation. No personal information (e.g., social security, bank or credit card account, driver’s license) will be requested. Census workers will have official government badges with their photographs, and carry black canvas bags and laptops with the Census logo. If a resident is in doubt about a visitor, s/he can call the U.S. Census Bureau Re-gional Office at 213-314-6500 to verify the person’s identity. If it is determined that the visitor is not an official Census worker, residents should call the San José Police Department non-emergency line at 408-277-8900 to report the inci-dent. This field operation will be ongoing through mid-October 2019. https://2020census.gov/en/census-takers.html?#

The Jazz weekend was great fun here with the free Gospel stage in the back, along with our 4:30 and 11:30 Masses. Thank you Julie Wind for coor-dinating this event with the San Jose Jazz Society and the musicians. This is a tremendous amount of work. Val Limar Jansen and her band (which includes her husband Frank Jansen) were awesome. Val is a powerful singer that is driven by her deep faith. Julie and some of her choir members sang with Frank and Val. There were four oth-er Gospel performances on the back stage throughout the weekend. They were all very well attended by people that heard the music and just walked in. Finally a thank you to the parish volunteers that helped the music department by selling waters, sodas and snacks. Here are a few pictures in case you weren’t able to attend this year. Tanis

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The wonderful diversity of life and worship among Roman Catholics of East and West is an example of God writing straight with crooked lines. The steady hand of the villainous Emperor Diocletian drew a line across Europe and Africa that split the em-pire in two, and for the most part determined how Christians would worship two thousand years later. Italy’s heel and the far northern city of Trieste fell on the Eastern side, and have had a form of Eastern liturgy ever since. Constantinople, which soon became the seat of the Roman Em-pire, became a base for Christianizing the East up to Russia and Poland. Poland was on the Eastern side, but a series of wars and medieval mayhem pushed the religious boundary back to the Ukraine, and Poland remains an outpost of the Latin Church to this day. An old rule of thumb declared that whatever religion was ob-served by the local prince, the people had to follow. This gave rise to persecution and migration as people sought toleration for their expressions of faith. In the United States, we are accustomed to peaceful collaboration among Christians of East and West, a situation that challenges churches that still feel the pinch of age-old division. —James Field, Copyright © J. Tuition Assistance Fund For Parishioners The Cathedral Parish has a fund supported by our parishioners that provides supplemental assistance with tuition for our families that seek Catholic School education for their chil-dren. It especially serves the need to help off-set extra costs to families from outside the school parish if, for example, their own parish does not have a school. Please inquire about this assistance by calling our parish office at 408-283-8100. This is available to parishioners of St. Joseph Cathedral. We welcome your call so that we can answer your questions.

As this parable opens, Luke reminds us that Jesus is making his way to Jerusalem. This journey, this exodus as Luke refers to it, makes up the entire middle of the Gospel. He is teaching as he goes. A question from the crowd gives Jesus the

chance to make a prophetic statement. Luke uses this question device a number of times in his Gospel. A few weeks ago, the question “What must I do to inherit eter-nal life?” led to the parable of the Good Samaritan. The question about will only a few be saved uses typical Christian language about salvation but also expresses the Jewish concern about whether everyone who calls himself a Jew is actually faithful to the covenant. This was a concern of the Pharisees. Jesus answers that they must strive in the time remain-ing to enter through the narrow door because many will be trying to get in but won't be strong enough. He then moves to a parable about another door. (The translation says “gate” then “door,” but the same Greek word is used.) Once all those entering the master's house are in and he locks the door, there will be no way for others to get in. Those left outside may knock, but the master will say he doesn't know them. Unlike the Gospel reading from a few weeks ago where Jesus was teaching about prayer, and we were told to knock and the door would be opened, in this parable, the master will not open and say he does not know us. People from the north, south, east, and west will take our place inside. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets will take our place in the Kingdom of God. Those who do not make it through the narrow door will be cast out to where there is wail-ing and grinding of teeth. In the end, many will be saved, but many who thought they would be saved will not be saved. The parable is a prophetic warning to repentance in or-der to enter the kingdom. Loyola Press

S aint of the Week Saint Louis IX of France April 25, 1214 – August 25, 1270 At his coronation as king of France, Louis IX

bound himself by oath to behave as God’s anointed, as the father of his people and feudal lord of the King of Peace. After the violence of two previous reigns, he brought peace and justice. He married Margaret of Provence with whom he had eleven children. Louis deserves credit for extending justice in civil admin-istration. His regulations for royal officials became the first of a series of reform laws. He replaced trial by battle with a form of examination of witnesses and encouraged the use of written records in court. Louis was devoted to his people, founding hospitals, visit-ing the sick, and like his patron Saint Francis, caring even for people with leprosy. He is one of the patrons of the Secular Franciscan Order. Louis united France—lords and townsfolk, peasants and priests and knights—by the force of his personality and holiness. For many years the nation was at peace. Every day, Louis had 13 special guests from among the poor to eat with him, and a large number of poor were

served meals near his palace. During Advent and Lent, all who presented themselves were given a meal, and Louis often served them in person. He kept lists of needy people, whom he regularly relieved, in every province of his dominion. Louis died on foreign soil at the age of 56. He was canonized 27 years later. Reflection Louis was strong-willed, strong-minded. His word was trusted utterly, and his courage in action was remarkable. What is most remarkable was his sense of respect for anyone with whom he dealt, especially the “humble folk of the Lord.” To care for his people he built cathedrals, churches, libraries, hospitals and orphan-ages. He dealt with princes honestly and equitably. He hoped to be treated the same way by the King of Kings, to whom he gave his life, his family and his country.
