ACERT™ TECHNOLOGY. Since March2003, ACERT Technology has beenproving itself in on-highway trucks.More recently it has proven itself againin field tests of off-highway equipment.

This technology allows Cat engines tomeet durability and reliability expectationswithout sacrificing fuel economy orperformance.

Engine electronic control modules andsensors are completely sealed againstmoisture and dust. Deutsche connectorsand electrical wire braiding ensure thatelectrical connections resist corrosionand premature wear.

Caterpillar Monitoring System. The 966His equipped with the Cat MonitoringSystem (CMS) that keeps watch over thehealth of your loader. CMS monitorscritical engine system functions and willderate the engine to protect itself fromdamage if needed. Depending on whichof the following six critical conditionsarise, the CMS monitor or front panelwill display warning lights and soundaudible alarms.

By regularly takingsamples from the ports provided, yourCat dealer tracks wear of componentsand parts, oil performance, and oilcondition and uses that data to predictwear-related problems before theyhappen. Often a simple adjustment orreplacement of a part, based on S•O•Sreports, can keep a small problem fromturning into a major repair – allowingyour machine to be running when youneed it, not waiting in the shop for service.

EPA TIER III, EU STAGE III COMPLIANTC11 ENGINE. ACERT Technologycombines proven systems with innovativenew technologies to precisely deliver fuelto the combustion chamber. It maintainsengine performance, efficiency anddurability while dramatically reducing emissions.

The Cat C11 with ACERT Technologyis an 11.1 L displacement, 6-cylinder,electronically governed engine.Electronic fuel injection is providedthrough the well-proven Caterpillarmechanically actuated, electronicallycontrolled unit injection (MEUI) system.A wastegate turbocharger, equipped witha titanium wheel for improved durability,combined with air-to-air aftercooling(ATAAC) provides consistent highhorsepower with increased altitudecapability.

Electronic Controller. The engine isgoverned by an electronic control moduledesignated the A4:E4V2. The controllercontinually adjusts engine output basedon load demand using a series of sensorslocated on the machine and engine.

Mechanically Actuated Electronic UnitInjectors (MEUI). The MEUI system hasbeen at work in Cat engines across theproduct line with a proven track record ofconsistent, durable, reliable performance.

Engine Block and Pistons. The gray,cast iron engine block is made of thesame material as the cylinder heads.Wall diameters are thicker than inprevious designs while adjustments havebeen made to reduce sound levels andincrease rigidity. One-piece all-steelpistons are housed within a wet,replaceable cast iron cylinder linerconstructed of high-strength, heat-treatedcastings. Steel-forged connecting rodsare larger in diameter and are connectedto the crankshaft with two bolts.

Cylinder Head. The cylinder head is a one-piece design that incorporatescross-flow design to facilitate airmovement. This allows the engine tobreathe cooler, cleaner air with less effort.

RADIATOR. Brazed aluminumconstruction provides a stronger joint formaximum durability and resistance toleaks. The 6-fins-per-inch, square-wavecore design decreases the chance ofblockage and plugging.

POWERSHIFT TRANSMISSION. The 966Hcontinues to use heavy-duty powershifttransmission technology proven onprevious models and currently used upthrough the largest wheel loader builtby Caterpillar, the 994F.

The planetary powershift transmissionfeatures heavy-duty components tohandle the toughest applications. Built-in electronic controls enhanceproductivity and durability.

Control Throttle Shifting. Control ThrottleShifting regulates engine speed duringhigh-energy directional changes forsmoother shifting and longercomponent life.

Electronic Clutch Pressure Control.Electronic Clutch Pressure Control(ECPC) system modulates clutchesindividually to improve shift quality,component life and operator comfort.Adjustment is simplified with allsolenoid valves externally mounted ontop of the transmission housing.

AXLES. The 966H axles are designed byCaterpillar for durability in all operatingconditions. The front axle is rigidlymounted to the frame to support theweight of the wheel loader andwithstand internal torque loads as wellas external forces encounteredthroughout operation.

The rear axle is designed to allow ± 13°oscillation. All four wheels remain onthe ground over uneven terrainproviding excellent stability andtraction.

Integrated Braking System. The Catexclusive Integrated Braking Systemreduces axle oil temperatures andimproves transmission neutralizersmoothness. IBS has a direct impact ondurability of the axles and brakesespecially in applications involvinglong distances and/or heavy braking.

STRUCTURES. The articulated framedesign of the 966H features a durablebox-section engine frame and rigidfour-plate loader tower that is roboticallywelded. Robotic welding creates framejoints with deep plate penetration weldsand excellent fusion for maximumstrength and durability.

Engine End Frame (EEF). A full box-section engine end frame with hitch platesat the front end provides a strong, rigidstructure that resists twisting and impactloads. The result is an extremely solidmounting platform for the engine,transmission, axle, ROPS and otheraccessories.

Spread Hitch. The distance between the upper and lower hitch plates is an important contributor to machineperformance and component life. The Caterpillar spread hitch designprovides excellent load distribution andbearing life. Both the upper and lowerhitch pins pivot on double tapered rollerbearings – improving durability bydistributing both vertical and horizontalloads over a larger surface area. The wide opening also providesexcellent service access.

Non-Engine End Frame (NEEF).The non-engine end frame provides asolid mounting base for the front axle,lift arms, lift cylinders and tilt cylinders.The fabricated, four-plate loader towerabsorbs the forces associated withloading, twisting and penetration.

Counterweight. The one-piececounterweight is integrated into the 966Hdesign and styling. This 2,517 lb (1142 kg)counterweight incorporates the rearlights into the top of the structure.

Linkage. The 966H linkage is a single-tilt Z-bar design. Z-bar linkage generatesexcellent breakout force and good rackback angle for better bucket loading andload retention.

Lift arms are solid steel, providingsuperior strength with an excellent frontend viewing area. The proven designoffers excellent dump clearance andreach for exceptional matching to both on- and off-highway trucks.

Rotary sensors, for the tilt lever and liftcircuit allow the operator to electronicallyset detent positions from the cab. A guardcovers the sensor to protect it fromdamage.

LOAD SENSING HYDRAULICS. The 966Hfeatures a load sensing hydraulic systemthat automatically adjusts to operatingconditions to provide only the hydraulicflow required by the implement forimproved fuel efficiency.

With the new M3PC Priority ProportionalPressure Compensation Valve, implementcontrol is improved over the previoussystem – raise/lower and rack back/dumpcan be operated simultaneously and finemodulation is repeatable for improvedproductivity.

Operators will notice enhanced ease ofoperation, more rimpull into the pileand a 20% increase in lift force.

Electrohydraulic Implement Controls.Electrohydraulic implement controls onthe 966H provide the operator with in-cab programmable kickouts to preventmaterial spillage – improving productivity.The implement control console featuresan optional Forward/Neutral/Reverseswitch allowing fast, easy directionalchanges to reduce cycle times.

CONSTANT NET HORSEPOWER.On many competitive machines, grosshorsepower is constant, meaning thatnet engine power available for actualwork will vary based on demands madefrom parasitic sources, such as airconditioning or cooling fans.

The Cat C11 engine is electronicallyconfigured to provide constant nethorsepower at full parasitic loadenhancing productivity and improving fuel efficiency.

On-Demand Fan. With electronic controlof the variable speed on-demand fan,temperature levels of the engine coolant,transmission oil, hydraulic oil and airinlet manifold are constantly monitored.This data is used to control and maintainfan speed at the level necessary tomaintain normal system temperatures.Controlled fan speed improves fuelefficiency, lowers noise levels andreduces radiator plugging.

Separated Cooling System.Many competitive loaders use coolingsystems that pull air in from the sides,through the engine compartment andexhaust it out the rear of the machine.The 966H cooling system is isolatedfrom the engine compartment by a non-metallic shield. The hydraulically driven,variable speed fan draws in clean air fromthe rear of the machine and exhausts itout the sides and top of the hood. The endresults are optimal cooling efficiency,increased fuel efficiency, less radiatorplugging and reduced operatorsound levels.

PLANETARY POWERSHIFTTRANSMISSION. The electronic planetarypowershift transmission with automaticshift capability is designed and built byCaterpillar. The very responsive, full-power speed and directional changesprovide excellent cycle times andproductivity.

VARIABLE SHIFT CONTROL.Match transmission shifting patterns to machine application requirements.Variable Shift Control (VSC) improvesshift quality and fuel efficiency in certainapplications by allowing the transmissionto upshift at lower engine RPMs.

RIDE CONTROL. The optional RideControl System improves ride,performance and load retention whentraveling over rough terrain. Operatorsgain confidence moving at higher speedsin load and carry operations decreasingcycle times and increasing productivity.

PAYLOAD CONTROL SYSTEM. Scales,designed specifically for Cat machinesallow on-the-go weighing of material inthe bucket. Operators load trucks moreaccurately and efficiently. Loading trucksright the first time equates to quickercycles for the operator and moreproductivity for your operation.

Payload Control is offered as a factory-installed option. Driver tickets and avariety of reports can be printed withthe addition of the optional printer.

SPECIAL MACHINE ARRANGEMENTS.When you have a specialized operation,you need a specialized wheel loader tobe productive. The following machinearrangements are available for the 966H:

Aggregate Yard Loaders. The YardLoader Value Package provides theultimate in productivity and convenience.Options such as Autolube, AggregateAutodig, Payload Control and RideControl reduce operator fatigue andmake your wheel loader the mostproductive yard loader available.

Forestry Applications. The ForestMachine Arrangement provides RideControl, a heavy-duty tilt cylinder andan additional counterweight for use inforestry and logging applications.

Industrial Loader. Heavy duty guardingand special features designed specificallyfor industrial applications, such aswaste and scrap handling, allow the966H to withstand the harshest ofconditions. Work tools designedspecifically for these applicationscan be added to the machine.

Lift Arrangements. High lift arrangementsare available for applications requiringadditional dump clearance. Both 2-valveand 3-valve packages can be factoryinstalled for conventional and CommandControl machines.

WORK TOOLS AND QUICK COUPLERS.A variety of buckets, work tools andcouplers are available from the factory orfrom your Caterpillar dealer to customizethe 966H for your operation.

Quick Couplers. Quick couplers provideunmatched versatility for wheel loaders.Buckets and work tools can be changedin seconds without leaving the cab formaximum productivity.

General Purpose Buckets.General purpose buckets provide goodall-around performance for stockpiling,rehandling, excavating and bank loading.A heavy duty general purpose bucketcan be used for more aggressiveapplications.

Material Handling Buckets. The materialhandling bucket is a flat-floor bucket usedfor handling stockpiled materials suchas aggregates or other easy-to-loadmaterials requiring moderatebreakout force.

Rock Buckets. Rock buckets are designedfor face or bank loading in mining orquarry applications. The straight-edgerock bucket provides higher breakoutforce and increased dump clearance.The spade-edge rock bucket offersincreased penetration in certainapplications.

Coal Buckets. Coal buckets maximizeproductivity in loading and stockpilingcoal and other materials of similardensity.

Heavy Duty Quarry Buckets. The heavyduty quarry bucket is available for high-impact or high-abrasion quarryapplications.

Multi-Purpose Buckets. Multi-PurposeBuckets have a unique four-way actionthat can load, strip topsoil, bulldoze,clamp pipe or large chunks of concrete,clean up debris, and many other tasks.

Side Dump Buckets. Side Dump Bucketsdump both to the front and to the side ofthe machine, an advantage when workingin tight quarters, such as street work,tunnel construction and building levees.

Ground Engaging Tools (GET).Several GET options are available fromCaterpillar for the 966H buckets. A castcorner adapter is incorporated into thedesign of the buckets that allows a toothto be placed on the extreme corner forprotection against base bucket wear.

Reversible bolt-on cutting edges (BOCE)and a bolt-on half-arrow cutting edgeare also available for the 966H buckets.

The Cat K-Series™ tooth system featuresan easier-to-install tip and provides verysecure tooth retention. No special toolsare required for installation and removal.

OPERATING ENVIRONMENT. The 966Hmaintains the distinction of offering thelargest, most ergonomic cab in its class.

Seat. The Cat C-500 Series Comfort airsuspension seat, standard in the 966H,is built strong and durable and is 6-wayadjustable to accommodate all-sizedoperators. The cast one-piece back andseat pan prevent protrusions under thecushions. The seat features an automotive-style lumbar support for maximumcomfort. The right hand armrest withintegrated implement controls adjustsfor comfortable, convenient operation.A heated seat option is available foradditional comfort.

VISIBILITY. The 966H offers excellentvisibility to both the front and rear ofthe machine. Distortion-free flat glassstretches to the floor of the cab forexcellent visibility to the bucket. Wet-armwipers on both front and back keep thewindows clean in any condition. The cabroof has channels that direct rain off thecorners of the cab keeping windows clear.An overhang on all sides protects theoperator from glare.

Windshield Cleaning Package.An optional windshield cleaning packageprovides additional steps and handrailsto provide easy access for cleaning thefront windows.

Rear Vision Camera. An optional rearvision camera is available to clearlymonitor movement behind thewheel loader.

Lighting Packages. Optional lightingpackages are available for roading orlow-light applications. The optionalHigh Intensity Discharge (HID) lightsprovide exceptional lighting for nightwork. A rotating beacon is available asa safety feature.

VIBRATION. Caterpillar understands that wheel loaders work in some of theharshest environments. By controllingnormal machine vibrations, operatorefficiency and productivity are improved.From the ground up, the Cat 966H isdesigned with many features, bothstandard and optional, that reducevibration.

• The oscillating rear axle follows thecontour of the ground while allowingthe cab to stay steady.

• The cab is attached to the frame withiso-mounts designed to reduce shockloads from the ground.

• The articulation joint is equipped withtwo neutralizer valves that preventframe-to-frame contact.

• Cylinder dampening slows the bucketas it reaches the limits of travel,preventing machine jarring.

• Ride Control is an option designedto reduce jolting and bouncingduring load and carry operations. An accumulator acts as a shockabsorber to reduce machine pitchingand provide a smoother ride overrough terrain.

• Electronically controlled, automatickickouts prevent the jerking andbouncing associated with abruptcylinder stops.

• Air suspension seat-mountedimplement controls reduce verticalvibrations that come up through the floor.

ENTRY AND EXIT. A ladder with self-cleaning steps keeps debris build-up toa minimum. The ladder is at a 5° forwardincline for easy entry and exit.

Platforms are wide allowing ease ofmovement to the front or rear of themachine. The main cab door opens a full180° and latches in place to allow safenavigation to the rear of the machine.

The right side door opens 10°, orcompletely for secondary exit simply bypulling a pin. A full-length ladder on theright side facilitates safe exit if needed.

STEERING OPTIONS. The 966H offers achoice of steering systems to provideflexibility for your application.

Conventional Steering. The conventionalsteering configuration offers a low-efforthand metering unit hydraulic steeringsystem. Load sensing steering directspower through the steering system onlywhen needed. When not steering, moreengine power is available to generaterimpull, breakout force, lift force, andresults in reduced fuel consumption.The steering column tilts for maximumoperator comfort.

Command Control Steering. CommandControl Steering is a load-sensing systemthat links the steering wheel and frameangle positions to provide the properamount of steering control. The speedthe machine turns is proportional to thesteering wheel position. Less than 6 lb(26 N) steering effort is required by theoperator, regardless of conditions. Full machine articulation is accomplishedwith a ±70° turn of the wheel – versustwo to three 360° turns of a conventionalsteering wheel.

The Command Control Steering wheelcontains the forward/neutral/reverseswitch and the upshift/downshift button– allowing the left hand to remain on thesteering wheel at all times. Implementcontrols are integrated into the rightarmrest so they move with the operator.

CONTROLS. The main control panel onthe 966H is located high on the rightROPS post – keeping everything withinreach of the operator while maintainingvisibility to the ground. Keeping allswitches and controls convenientlyplaced allows better efficiency andimproved productivity all whileminimizing operator fatigue.

AGGREGATE AUTODIG. The optionalAggregate Autodig System providessmoother loading cycles and consistentlyfull payloads without touching thecontrols – reducing operator fatigue.

FUEL EFFICIENCY. Many manufacturerstout fuel consumption as one of thedetermining factors for machineacquisition, but fuel consumption is onlypart of the story. 966H Fuel Efficiency. Customer testingof the 966H is showing an improvementin fuel efficiency over the 966G SeriesII. This fuel savings is achieved throughthe use of the Caterpillar proportional-flow load sensing hydraulic system,Engine Idle Management Systemsoftware, Variable Shift Control and ACERT Technology.

ACERT™ Technology Fuel Economy.Based on Caterpillar testing, the fueleconomy of Cat engines with ACERTTechnology is 3 to 5 percent better thancurrent competing technologies. Thisfuel economy is directly related to thecomplete combustion of fuel due to the integration between the electroniccontrol that monitors conditions, the air management system that controls air volume and the fuel injection systemthat delivers just the right amount offuel as needed.

Free Wheel Stator Torque Converter(FWSTC). The free wheel stator torqueconverter improves power trainefficiency in load and carry operationswhich contributes to the improved fuelefficiency of the 966H.

ENGINE IDLE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM.The Engine Idle Management System(EIMS) maximizes fuel efficiency andprovides flexibility in managing idlespeeds for specific applicationrequirements. Four idle control speeds are available.

Hibernate Mode. Idle speed drops aftera preset time to provide lower fuelconsumption, reduced sound levels and lower emissions.

Work Mode. Adjust to working idlespeeds according to customer preferenceand operating conditions.

HYDRAULIC SERVICE CENTER.Transmission oil and hydraulic filters arelocated in the Hydraulic Service Center,behind the hinged, right-side accessladder. The hydraulic oil tank can bedrained from this location using theaccess port.

• Transmission filter change intervalat 1,000 hours

ELECTRIC SERVICE CENTER. Batteries,relay panel and an optional tool box areconveniently located below the left-sideaccess platform. The engine shutdownswitch is housed with the relay panel. A compartment integrated into the accessplatform contains the hood tilt actuationswitch, master switch and jump-startreceptacle.

GROUND LEVEL GREASE POINTS.Grease fittings are grouped on the rightside of the machine in two convenientlocations – in a service compartment justbelow the right-side service platform, anda bank located just off the non-engine endframe. These locations facilitate easylubrication of vital components locatedthroughout the machine.

AUTOLUBE. Reduce time spent on dailymaintenance and downtime for unplannedrepairs due to inadequate greasing withthe optional Caterpillar AutomaticLubrication System. Precise lubricationof pins and bushings at specific intervalsimproves component wear and reducesground contamination from excessivegreasing.

S•O•S SERVICES. Sampling valves on the 966H allow quick access to engine,transmission and hydraulic oils for S•O•Sanalysis. Oil change intervals and otherservices can be optimized according toyour work schedule, reducing downtimeand managing expenses.

REMOTE PRESSURE TAPS. Pressure tapsfor the steering and hydraulic systems,transmission (optional) and brakes aregrouped behind an access panel justbelow the right-side service platform.

BRAKE WEAR INDICATORS. Axles areequipped with standard brake wearindicators, allowing a technician to easilydetermine when it is necessary to servicethe brakes.

ENGINE COMPARTMENT ACCESS.The non-metallic hood on the 966H has been redesigned and restyled fromprevious models. Side and top panels arestronger due to more robust reinforcementribs – the change in contour also adds torigidity of the hood.

A single mechanical lift cylinder with manual back-up opens the hood.The tilting hood provides excellent accessto the engine compartment, and ifnecessary, the entire hood can beremoved with the built-in lift points.

With the hood closed, quick checks ofengine oil levels and the coolant sightgauge can be completed through theside service doors.

Panels located behind the tires lift upand can be removed for additional access.Roading fenders hinge from the rear andswing out allowing easier access to theengine compartment.

ECOLOGY DRAINS. Engine, transmissionand hydraulic oils can be easily drainedwith standard-equipment ecology drains.An axle oil ecology drain is optional.

ELECTRIC PRIMING PUMP. An electricfuel priming pump located on the primaryfuel filter base eliminates the need topre-fill or manually prime filters after a change, eliminating enginecontamination.

COOLING SYSTEM. Cooling systemaccess for clean-out and maintenance is outstanding. The perforated andcorrugated grill minimizes debris build-up and swings out for easy cleaning andaccess to the cooling cores.

The full-width air conditioning condenserand oil cooler cores swing out 45° toallow easy cleaning of the rear radiatorface. Access panels on either side of theradiator support structure provide accessto the front face of the radiator andATAAC cores for easy cleaning.

CAB. The entire operator station can beremoved in about 45 minutes and is easyto re-attach. Quick disconnects are usedso no wires need to be cut and norefrigerant is lost.

Cab cleaning is made easy with channelson the cab floor and no threshold at thedoor – the floor can be swept or moppedout easily.

WINDSHIELD CLEANING PACKAGE.An optional windshield cleaning packageconsists of two steps for the loader frontframe, two additional handrails and afolding mirror. This package allowsaccess to the entire front windshield for easy cleaning.

COMPLETE CUSTOMER SUPPORT.Cat field service technicians have theexperience and tools necessary to serviceyour loader on site. Technical experts atthe dealership and Caterpillar can provideadditional assistance to field servicetechnicians as needed.
