Moon Phase Hand Signals!
Let’s practice our moon phases!
Cornell Notes: Earth Time
We will not be reading in the textbook today, we will be reading from a lesson worksheet similar to our Moon Phases homework last night.
Today, we will learn about what causes a day and a year on Earth – we actually already know the answer to this!
It would be better to use PEN today while taking your notes, so you can see over the gray area on the bottom of your Cornell Notes worksheet.
We will answer the discussion question using complete sentences, and explain why you chose the answers for the lesson review questions at the end of class if we have time!
The lesson worksheet is yours to keep, to help you study and do your best on your quiz tomorrow!
Axis
An axis is an imaginary line through the center of a planet or other object.
That line passes through the Earth’s center between its north and south pole.
Earth rotates on its axis.
Rotate
To rotate is to spin on an axis.Earth rotates counterclockwise,
from west to east.
Day
One day is the time it takes for Earth to rotate once on its axis.
As Earth spins, the sun seems to move across the sky from east to west.
One day passes in the time from one sunrise to the next!
Revolve
To revolve is for one object to move around another object.
While Earth rotates, it also revolves around the Sun.
Earth takes a little more than 365 days to revolve once around the Sun.
Year
A year is the time Earth takes to revolve once around the Sun.
That time is a little more than 365 days.
Leap Year
A leap year occurs every four years and has 366 days.
Earth takes exactly 365.25 days to make one revolution around the Sun – a year on Earth is actually one quarter of a day longer than a year on our calendar!
Practice with Whiteboards
The following questions will be good practice questions on what we learned yesterday and today.
Only uncap your marker when you are writing an answer, and cap your marker immediately after writing your answer
You will have 30 seconds to write your answer – so use your notes from today to help you!
When Ms. McGuirk counts down from 5, you may stand and show your whiteboard to me
What time on Earth do we associate the Moon’s revolution?
(A day, month, or year?)
A MONTH
The Moon orbits the Earth in 27.3 days,
but it takes about 30 days to go from one
full Moon to the next. So, the lunar cycle completes a month
on Earth.
Which term do we give to a moon phase that is
smaller than a quarter?
Crescent – A crescent moon is
shaped like a croissant biscuit!
Which term do we give to a moon phase when the moon appears to be getting larger?
Waxing – the moon gets bigger from right to left
Identify the Moon Phase
Third Quarter/Last Quarter
The third quarter phase of the moon is also commonly called the “Last Quarter”
Last begins with the letter L and the visible part of the moon is found on the Left side – Left also begins with the letter L!Last quarter,
the half of moon that can be seen is on theLeft side
What happens to the Earth in a 24-
hour period of time?
The Earth rotates (spins) once on
its axis.
What is responsible for a
year on our Earth?
The Earth’s revolution.
(orbit/trip around the Sun)
How often does a “leap year”
occur?
Every four years.
(the next leap year will be in
2012!)
How many days does a “leap year” have?
366 days.
Every four years, we add a day to our
calendar to account for the extra time it takes
Earth to revolve around the Sun (365.25 days to
be exact).
