Catalonia Trade & Investment – thegovernment’s agency for foreigninvestment attraction and businesscompetitiveness – has signed amemorandum of understandingwith the Beacon Council to enforcethe existing efforts between bothorganizations in serving as conduitsfor businesses interested inexpanding to either region.

In April, Miami Today reported thatduring an official visit to the US,Jordi Baiget, minister of businessand knowledge of the Governmentof Catalonia, was “negotiating anagreement with the Beacon Counciland Catalonia Trade & Investmentin order to promote economic andtrade relationships betweenCatalonia and Florida.”

Those negotiations have come tofruition as both regions look forward

to encouraging their home companies to cross bordersand expand their business relationships.

“The negotiations between the Government of Cataloniaand the Beacon Council were very successful. We signed amemorandum of understanding between the BeaconCouncil and Catalonia Trade & Investment,” said JaumeBlanché, press manager at Catalonia Trade & Investment.

The memorandum outlines, in broad terms, howCatalonia, Florida, Barcelona and Miami can collaborateto grow in specific fields where they all have commoninterests, said Conchita Muñoz, director of CataloniaTrade & Investment’s Miami office.

“[The memorandum is] designed to help support andreinforce collaboration and partnership between bothregions, in terms of helping support innovation, researchand development, particularly among the technologysector, as well as the creative design industry, biomedicaland trade and logistics,” said Pamela Fuertes­Berti, vicepresident of international economic developmentprograms at The Beacon Council.

Additionally, Ms. Blanché said, it will create a “favorableclimate” for the development of trade and investment and

intensifying “bilateral cooperation” in some areas that thepartnership has identified as priorities: research andindustrial innovation and technology, health, life sciences,renewable energy, information technology andinfrastructure.

In April, Miami Today reported that, as Catalonia Trade &Investment’s only office in charge of focusing on businessthroughout the southern US and the Caribbean, theMiami office is the second most active in the worldwidenetwork, yielding the top spot to the Paris office.

“Sometimes companies have to do compliance checks[before they’re able to sell in the US], so while they’redoing that here, they can start selling in the Caribbean[because they’re so close],” Ms. Muñoz said.

Cosmetics companies as well as companies that sellanything with nutritional value need to first get the go­ahead from federal agencies like the FDA, she said.

“Those compliances can take six months up to a year, sothose companies might start in Miami and work withcompanies in the Caribbean and receive a return on theirinvestment by being here [and selling there],” Ms. Muñozsaid.

The partnership between Catalonia and the BeaconCouncil will hopefully provide startups and techcompanies, two industries that are booming at parallelrates in Miami and Barcelona, with the support, contactsand networking opportunities that they need, she said.

“For the government of Catalonia, the signing of thismemorandum is highly positive, as the Beacon Council isthe business institution reference to the area of Miami­Dade, a very powerful business hub and entry point to theUnited States of many Catalan companies,” Ms. Blanchésaid.

“The Beacon Council and the Catalonia Trade &Investment office in Miami share a long­standinginstitutional relationship,” Ms. Fuertes­Berti said. “[It]has resulted in a number of positive outcomes, includingsupporting each other’s foreign direct investment efforts,welcoming of international business delegations andfacilitating contacts that have extended and deepened thebusiness development and foreign direct investment tiesamong both regions.”
