CATALOGUE, NEW PUBLIC PLACESAND NEW PUBLIC PROGRAMS
NEW PUBLIC PLACESWhen in Southwestern Norway, the ideals of urban situations from other climatic situations are not always easy to apply. Rooms for public use are also important when it is not sunny, pleasant weather.
I have suggestions on how to use the existing open spaces for something else than large private gardens, parking lots or just hidden qualities. Some of the large gardens could perhaps be turned into more common or publicly available gardens? Please look on the next pages for my suggestions on new and better open spaces for Ganddal.
NEW PUBLIC PROGRAMSAfter adding the new public places, I wanted to look at how the existing buildings and some new build-ings could amplify and strengthen an urban culture at Ganddal.
I tried to introduce a school annexe and some restaurant rooms/dining rooms for locals. In addition to this, I also wanted a repair shop for bikes, cafe and business rooms close to the principal roads. See on the next pages for the suggestions I have for new built programs.
EXISTING AND NEW PUBLIC STRUCTURE
THEMES AND PARAMETERSTo properly anchor a change in the community and the built surroundings, I find it crucial to include the existing use and the existing qualities. I have tried to group the suggestions of new places and new programs, to make it more clear that they are related.
The first group of places and new programmes are general and basically cater the whole community. Next, the social and natural themed suggestions build upon the natural surroundings, being together and meeting other people. The following theme focuses on the learning, playing and self-building activities in all ages. It connects the primary school with the neighbourhoods.
Getting around is a vital part of any community. Often carrying or transporting something - or just getting from A to B. The suggestions theme logistics build upon good, sustainable transportation habits.
IDEAS FOR PUBLIC PLACES AND PROGRAMSThe existing structure of public programmes in buildings and public places does not reflect the existing population and the changing population in the future. This becomes even more important when the physical surroundings should house and service even more people, in a more urban setting.
I have tried to transform some of the existing buildings (into a bar, makerspace, school annexes), look at existing buildings sectionally (introducing rooftop farms and drone landing spots) to adapt Ganddal to a more urban future brought by better high speed transit (after 2020, new bus and train systems in Stavanger-area).
The key principle was to give options to walk for everything and introduce new and strong qualities for the public structure. Did I make some good suggestions? Please have a look.
