STEELS
MTG STEELS
Our constant pursuit of innovation, our longstanding tradition in the produc-tion of high-quality steels and the support of major international experts have made possible the creation of MTG Steels; these steels signifi cantly improve the quality of the teeth and the adapters manufactured by MTG, making them last longer, with fewer breakages.
Our steels are moulded from low-alloy steel, manufactured in electric arc furnaces with extensive refi ning processes. We have exhaustive control of composition, gas and inclusion contents of the transformation and the struc-ture obtained in the heat treatments.
Based on an optimal balance hardness and toughness, MTG Steels provide the best possible characteristics available today in terms of wear resistance thanks to manufacturing procedures incorporating the most advanced tech-niques in moulded steels and in the common steel industry.

PROPERTIES OF THE STEELS
The most important characteristic of MTG Steels is their optimised capacity to
withstand wear and impacts. Parts made from our steel last longer and do not
break.
Wear is a very complex phenomenon. It is affected by many variables which are dif-
fi cult to measure , such as the type of terrain, the geometrical shape of the piece
and the pressure it receives, the angle of attack , the speed, the weather condi-
tions, and even the phenomena of corrosion.
Wear is the loss of material experienced by the teeth and adapters through their
interaction with the terrain.
During use, the MTG steel of the teeth and adapters is subjected to:
• Strong impacts.
• Repetitive mechanical stresses that cause fatigue.
• Friction through contact with the terrain at low angles of attack.
• High temperatures due to friction with the terrain during work.
• Very localised repeat impacts that may give rise to small material detachments
or to very localised cracking.
On a microscopic level there are 4 different types of abrasion mechanisms.
Micro-plowing: this involves no wear in itself; the material simply changes posi-
tion, creating a furrow which is typical of plowing.
Microcutting: the material is ripped and thrown out as chips.
Micro-fatigue: the material detaches through a cycle of continual deformations.
Micro-cracking: it occurs in high-hardness steels, which are therefore more
fragile, and causes the detachment of small pieces of the surface of the material.
MANUFACTURING PROCESS
• MTG has a 5-tonne electric arc furnace with a 4500-KVA transformer.
• During smelting, extensive refi ning processes are conducted with thenecessary
controls and adjustments to obtain the best possible characteristics of the steel.
The controls are exhaustive and are carried out using cutting-edge equipment.
• Mould fi lling.
• Heat treatment.
• The following controls are carried out at the end of the process:
a. Cracking. Magnafl ux control
b. Hardness. Brinell Test
c. Dimensional. Fitting control.
• Other non-metallurgical processes until the fi nal product is obtained.

STEELS
HOW DO MTG STEELS OBTAIN THE MAXIMUM WEAR RESISTANCE?
Through the optimal balance between its principal properties.
The working behaviour of steels for wear material has traditionally only been con-
sidered in terms of one of their properties: their hardness. The greater the hardness
of the steel, the greater the wear resistance and duration.
Evidently, in applications that require high wear resistance, where abrasion phe-
nomena prevail, the hardness of a steel is its most important property. However,
numerous fi eld tests and laboratory trials carried out in collaboration with the
most prestigious universities and institutions demonstrate that in certain service
conditions there are other, more important properties.
In applications (ripping, dragging and some digging) in which wear is produced by
the combined action of friction between the abrasive material and the steel (very
low angles of attack) and repetitive impacts with high pressures (strong impacts),
tenacity takes on greater relevance.
Hardness
This is the measurement of the resistance of a metal to the permanent deforma-
tion of its surface. It is also defi ned as penetration and scratching resistance.
The hardness of steel depends almost entirely on its carbon content, provided that
it is submitted to an effective hardening process.
MTG Steels guarantee a high level of hardness resulting from a carefully studied
composition and a specifi c heat treatment especially developed by MTG.
The most common hardness tests consist of measuring the print left by a penetrating
object when it is applied, with a given load, to the surface of the material. The smaller
the mark obtained under standard conditions, the harder the material tested.
The penetrator in a hardness test is generally a sphere, pyramid or cone made of a
much harder material than the one tested, such as a diamond, for example.
In most standard tests, the load is applied when the penetrating object is pressed
slowly, perpendicular to the test surface, for a given period of time. From the re-
sults obtained, a hardness value can be calculated from the load applied and the
area of the cross section or the depth of the print.
Toughness
This is the capacity for deformation before breaking. It is a mechanical term used
in several contexts; in the broadest sense it is a measure of a material’s capacity to
absorb energy before it breaks. This absorption of energy always takes place at the
expense of a plastic deformation, and consequently, toughness is also a measure-
ment of a material’s capacity for plastic deformation.
The homogeneity of the structure of the steel, as well as the level of inclusions and
their morphology, are factors that determine its toughness.
One of most commonly used tests to measure the toughness of a steel is the re-
silience test, which measures impact resistance. A square section sample with a
carefully machined notch it is used.
This sample is broken by dropping it from a known height. The energy absorbed to
break the sample brakes the pendulum, and the energy needed for the breakage
is obtained by measuring the difference in angles.
MTG Steels are rugged steels that guarantee that parts will not break and will
wear less in high impact situations.
Degree of refi nement
All steels contain, in greater or lesser proportions, undesirable elements in the
form of inclusions that interrupt the mass of the steel and weaken the internal
bonding forces, which has an important effect on the toughness and ductility of
the part.
1. Fragile steel due to continued inclusions at the grain limit.
2. Quality steel. The inclusions are globular with some sharp edges. This steel does not break (it is tough) although the inclusions affect the characteristics of the steel.
3. High quality of MTG Steel: clean steel. The number and size of inclusions, which are small and round, have been reduced.

MTG SYSTEMS RIPMET.
NEW MTG SYSTEM FOR HAMMERLESS RIPPER.
Includes shroud, tooth, weld nose, weldable base, and MTGtwist locking system.
ADVANTAGES OF THE SYSTEM
Greater wear life and optimal penetration
When other rippers on the market must be replaced, the RipMet teeth keep
working with excellent penetration.
The shorter shape of the adapter nose positively infl uences on two decisive factors
which improve performance.
The teeth have a higher percentage of wear material, which increases their wear
life.
The self-sharpening channel maintains penetration until the end of its service.
The adapter protects and optimizes the penetration of the arm in a lasting way,
making the most of the wear material and its central nerve.
The components of the RipMet are fully integrated into the system, improving ma-
terial fl ow and optimizing penetration.
Excellent resistance on the toughest applications
The stability of the fi tting system distributes better the forces when working,
minimizing breakages even on the hardest applications.
The stabilization surfaces of the fi tting systems guarantees improved distribution
of forces while working and it keeps the tooth fi rmly in place. System minimizes
breakages, even on the most extreme applications.
The fi tting system stops the impacts from being transmitted to the locking ele-
ments, preventing the pin from bending or breaking.
Safety and ease when changing teeth
MTG Systems RipMet uses the MTGtwist locking solution which offers the following
advantages:
When changing the teeth or the shroud:
Safety: the fact that no hammer is required prevents accidents due to fl ying metal
particles.
Comfort: less effort is required than for traditional systems with a hammer.
Easier and faster: changing the elements of the system can be completed much
easier and more quickly.
When working:
Excellent retention: the pin retention system always keeps it in its initial position,
completely preventing tooth loss.

MTG SYSTEMS KINGMET.
SYSTEM FOR LIGHT AND MEDIUM CONSTRUCTION.
Robust and resistant system for excavators and loaders which works without
breakages and improves the machine's bucket penetration.
SYSTEMSKINGMET
ADVANTAGES OF THE SYSTEM
It will work without breakages. Robust and resistant system (1)
a. Since there is a greater distance between the contact surfaces of the tooth and
the adapter, the lever effect means that the system works with less stress.
b. The elliptical shape of the nose increases the contact surfaces between the
tooth and the adapter for a better distribution of stresses, increasing the wear life
of the adapter.
c. Resistant to all types of stresses:
1. Fronts: the angle less than 90º of the adapter shoulder means, that in the
event of head-on stresses, the tooth box tends to be pushed into an even
tighter fi t with the adapter.
2. Lateral: the casing of the tooth and the adapter in ear prevents them from
tending to open.
3. Verticals: the double stabilization surface counteracts the force caused by
vertical stresses in such a way that the tooth, adapter, and pin are subjected
to a lower level of stress.
Tooth changing: fast, easy and safe (2)
Less stopping the machine and safety for the operator.
a. Since the system has a vertical pin, less effort is required to insert or remove it.
b. Characteristics of the pin. The vertical pin is made up of two parts:
1. The pin body , made of the highest-quality steel to afford it optimal resistance
and to permit its reuse.
2. The retainer, which is made of two components: Elastomet, which gives it
elasticity and fl exibility, and compact polyurethane.
The combination of a resistant, reusable body and an elastic, fl exible pin provides
great ease of assembly and, in turn, the maximum reliability and guarantees that
the MTG Systems KingMet locking system works properly.
Longer wear life and performance. (3)
Long duration of the tooth.
a. More wear material; since it is a robust locking system, we can make the teeth
longer without the risk of breakage.
b. Made of MTG Steels: technologically the most advanced, they provide greater
durability and fewer breakages.
Longer-lasting locking system
Since it is housed in the adapter, the pin is completely protected from wear and
impacts.
Teeth are always sharp. (4)
Improved bucket penetration
The specially designed profi le of the tooth offers an excellent penetration through-
out its service life.
