Greetings from Osprey!

The second half of 2019 sees a host of exciting titles for Osprey, with new books from authors both old and new. Popular Eastern Front expert Prit Buttar’s Retribution (p.2) follows on from On a Knife’s Edge, continuing the story of the war in Western Ukraine between 1943 and 1944, while Thomas McKelvey Cleaver offers a fascinating insight into the aerial battles of the Korean War in MiG Alley (p.3). Meanwhile, Robert Forczyk’s Case White (p.3) commemorates the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II by analysing the German invasion of Poland, while Robert Kirchubel’s stunning Atlas of the Blitzkrieg (p.1) offers a cartographic overview of the entire blitzkrieg campaign. Angus Konstam explores one of the war’s naval turning points, the sinking of the German battleship Bismarck in Hunt the Bismarck (p.1).

In September, we will be launching our new graphic novel series, Under Fire (p.10), which combines vibrant illustrations and compelling narratives to tell the stories of some of the most dramatic battles in history. The series explores each campaign through the eyes of those who were there, offering both an overview of the course of each conflict and an insight into the human experience of the soldiers on the ground.

Osprey Games builds on its success this year with the much-anticipated Throne of Glass: Embers of Memory (p.23), based on Sarah J. Maas’ best-selling series. The game’s announcement has been met with fantastic enthusiasm from her fanbase, who are eagerly anticipating its release in October. Other new games include the World War II deck-builder Undaunted: Normandy, following the US 30th Infantry’s Normandy campaign (p.25); Judge Dredd: Helter Skelter (p.24) from Martin Wallace, the award-winning designer of London and Wildlands; and Oathmark (p.27), a mass battle fantasy war game by the author of Frostgrave.

Enjoy!

Atlas of the Blitzkrieg1939–41

Robert Kirchubel

A stunning, slip-cased collection of cartography offering a detailed insight into the German Blitzkrieg during World War II.

In August 1939, Nazi Germany launched its infamous Blitzkrieg invasion of Poland, bringing about the outbreak of World War II. Faced with highly tactical and accelerated attacks aimed at disrupting the line of defence and encircling vulnerable troops, Allied forces broke under pressure. Within the space of a year, France had been invaded and occupied, and by 1941, the bulk of Continental Europe was under Nazi control. Though the dominance of the Blitzkrieg method was to be challenged in the latter part of the war, its unparalleled success in the early years of the conflict brought Europe to its knees.

Featuring 107 detailed maps, this impressive atlas shows, in intricate detail, the fighting and physical challenges faced by the German attackers and Allied defenders.

Robert Kirchubel has had a keen interest in the history of World War II for the duration of his adult life. He has already contributed work to World War Two in Europe, World War Two in the Pacific and The International Military Encyclopaedia. He has previously compiled the Atlas of the Eastern Front for Osprey.

AUTUMN HIGHLIGHTS

Hunt the BismarckThe pursuit of Germany’s most famous battleship

Angus Konstam

A brand-new narrative account of one of World War II’s most exciting chase stories, the pursuit of the legendary battleship, Bismarck.

Entering service as Germany’s largest battleship in the summer of 1940, Bismarck was well-armed with eight 15-inch guns and an array of lighter weapons. Her impressive armour earned her the reputation of being unsinkable, a claim which was finally put to the test in May 1941. During Operation Rheinübung, Bismarck sortied into the Atlantic and destroyed HMS Hood, the pride of the Royal Navy. However, damage sustained in the battle limited her ability to roam at will, and the Royal Navy deployed the Home Fleet to avenge the Hood. The stage was set for the greatest chase story in the history of naval warfare. This new account of the epic pursuit intertwines a wealth of first-hand accounts and extensive research to create a fast-paced narrative of tension and daring in the waters of the Atlantic.

Angus Konstam is a well-established historian, and the acclaimed author of over 80 books. Many of these are published by Osprey, including the Campaign title Bismarck 1941 and several New Vanguard titles covering British warships of World War II. His other naval books include Jutland: Twelve Hours to Win the War, Sovereigns of the Sea, and History of Piracy. A former naval officer, maritime archaeologist and museum curator, he is now a full-time author, specializing in maritime and military history.

MacArthur’s Air Force

Bill Yenne

Traces the origins of MacArthur’s air force in the Philippines through to its victory in the skies over Japan and its key role in the Korean War.

General Douglas MacArthur is one of the towering figures of World War II, but his leadership of the second largest air force in the USAAF is often overlooked. When World War II ended, MacArthur was the highest military and political authority in Japan, and the three numbered air forces under his command possessed over 5,000 aircraft. At the outbreak of the Korean War, MacArthur was named as Commander in Chief, United Nations Command. Written by award-winning aviation historian Bill Yenne, this engrossing book traces the journey of American air forces in the Pacific under General MacArthur’s command, from their lowly beginnings to their eventual triumph over Imperial Japan, followed by their entry into the jet age in the skies over Korea.

Bill Yenne is the author of more than three dozen non-fiction books, as well as ten novels. His work has been selected for the Chief of Staff of the Air Force Reading List. He is the recipient of the Air Force Association’s Gill Robb Wilson Award for the ‘most outstanding contribution in the field of arts and letters [as an] author whose works have shaped how thousands of Americans understand and appreciate airpower’.

RetributionThe Soviet Reconquest of Central Ukraine, 1943–44

Prit Buttar

A detailed and engrossing account of the war on the Eastern Front as the German forces were driven back following the Battle of Kursk.

Beginning towards the end of the Battle of Kursk, Retribution explores the massive Soviet offensive that followed the end of Operation Zitadelle, which saw depleted and desperate German troops forced out of Western Ukraine. In this title, Buttar describes in detail the little-known series of near-constant battles that saw a weakened German army confronted by a tactically sophisticated force of over six million Soviet troops. As a result, the Wehrmacht was driven back to the Dnepr and German forces remaining in the Kuban Peninsula south of Rostov were forced back into the Crimea, a retreat which would become one of many in the months that followed. The title makes use of the extensive first-hand accounts of German and Russian soldiers to bring their story to life.

Prit Buttar is an established expert on the Eastern Front in 20th-century military history. Buttar’s previous books include the critically acclaimed Battleground Prussia: The Assault on Germany’s Eastern Front 1944–45, Between Giants: The Battle for the Baltics in World War II and a definitive four-part series on the Eastern Front in World War I, which concluded with The Splintered Empires: The Eastern Front 1917–21.

Case WhiteThe Invasion of Poland 1939

Robert Forczyk

Commemorating the 80th anniversary of the start of World War II, Robert Forczyk tells the story the German invasion of Poland in 1939.

The German invasion of Poland on 1 September, 1939, codenamed Fall Weiss (Case White), sparked the outbreak of World War II in Europe. The campaign has widely been described as a textbook example of Blitzkrieg, but it was actually fairly conventional as the Wehrmacht was still learning how to use its new Panzers and dive-bombers. Meanwhile, the Polish military is often misrepresented as hopelessly obsolete, yet in fact it was well-equipped with modern weapons and armour. Indeed, the Polish possessed more tanks than the British and had cracked the German Enigma machine cipher.

Using a wide array of sources, Robert Forczyk challenges the myths of Case White to tell the full story of the invasion that precipitated history’s greatest conflict.

Robert Forczyk has a PhD in International Relations and National Security from the University of Maryland and a strong background in European and Asian military history. He retired as a lieutenant colonel from the US Army Reserves having served 18 years as an armour officer in the US 2nd and 4th infantry divisions and as an intelligence officer in the 29th Infantry Division (Light).

MiG AlleyThe US Air Force in Korea, 1950–53

Thomas McKelvey Cleaver

An in-depth analysis of the US Air Force’s war in Korea, packed with personal stories based on first-person testimonies from both sides.

Of the many myths that emerged following the end of the Korean War, the prevailing one in the West was that of the absolute supremacy of US Air Force pilots and aircraft over their Soviet-supplied opponents. These claims went unchallenged until the end of the Cold War, when Soviet records of the conflict were finally opened. From that point onwards, a very different story began to emerge. Far from decisive American victories over an unsophisticated opponent, the aerial battles of the Korean War were, at least in the early years, evenly matched affairs, fought to an approximate 1:1 victory-loss ratio. Incorporating first-hand accounts from those involved, both US and Russian, this new history of the US Air Force in Korea reveals the full story of this bitter struggle in the Eastern skies.

Thomas McKelvey Cleaver has been a published writer for the past 40 years, and this work is the product of 25 years of research. He is the author of a number of Osprey titles, including The Frozen Chosen, Tidal Wave, and Holding the Line. He is also a regular contributor to Flight Journal magazine. During his 30 years as a screenwriter in Hollywood, he wrote the cult classic The Terror Within. He served in the US Navy in Vietnam.

The Persian WarA military history

William Shepherd

The enthralling story of the triumph of Greece over the mighty Persian Empire.

The victory of a few Greek city-states over the world’s first superpower was an extraordinary military feat that secured the future of western civilization. All modern accounts of the war as a whole, and of Marathon, Thermopylae and Salamis, the best-known battles, depend on the ancient sources, foremost amongst them Herodotus, but generally quote very little from them. This is the first book to bring together Herodotus’ entire narrative and interweave it with other ancient voices to present the original texts that comprise almost all that is known about this immense clash of arms.

William Shepherd studied classics at Clare College, Cambridge, in the 1960s and then embarked on a career in publishing which finally brought him to Osprey, where he retired as chief executive in 2007. He is author of The Persian War (Cambridge, 1982), translated from Herodotus. He has also written reading books for children, articles in the Osprey Military Journal, of which he was joint editor, and Salamis 480 BC, Plataea 479 BC and Pylos and Sphacteria 425 BC, all for Osprey.

THE CAMPAIGN76

EVENTS1. Alpha strike package from Carrier Air Wing 19 (CVW-19) aboard the USS Ticonderoga (CVA-14)

approaches coast of North Vietnam, ingressing at 350kts at 20,000ft. 2. Flight of four MiG-17 Fresco-Cs of the VPAF’s 923rd Regiment “Yen The” takes off from Kep. On

ground, SAM sites ready for first launches based on tracking information from their Fan Song fire-control radars.

3. Alpha strike leader begins descent to roll-in altitude, jinking and weaving to confound gunners during descent. Alerted by radar warning receivers, Iron Hand sections begun hunting SAM radars, firing on four of them with Shrikes. TARCAP remains high and moves to outside to block MiGs from attacking strike forces.

4. Kep GCI orders MiG-17 flight, now at 10,000ft, to turn south and climb, positioning it to engage strike by attacking from astern – but the MiG attacks are frustrated by the F-8 TARCAP.

5. VA-192 A-4F and VF-194 F-8E strike package reaches 14,000ft roll-in point amid increasingly heavy conventional antiaircraft fire. The package rolls in on Kien An Airbase and drops its bombs at 4,500ft altitude, clearing the target within two minutes, and then climbs back to egress altitude. The Iron Hand and F-8 flak suppressors continue attacking SAM and AAA sites, and F-8 TARCAP frustrates the MiG-17s, which repeatedly attempt to engage strike force.

6. The strike package and escorts disengage, jinking, weaving and climbing to altitude. Iron Hand sections and TARCAP cover their egress and disengage last.

7. GCI vectors MiGs, now at 8,500ft, to return to Kep. They dodge through their own 85mm and 100mm antiaircraft fire.

8. Alpha strike is now all “feet wet” over the Gulf of Tonkin. USS Ticonderoga launches a single RF-8G (VFP-63 Det 14) plus a single F-8E (VF-191) escort to undertake post-strike low-level recce of target.

THE CAMPAIGN60

few months of Rolling Thunder, the Navy introduced the A-6B into the fleet, a dedicated

SAM-killer armed with Shrikes and the longer-range and more capable AGM-78 Standard

ARM, beginning with three deployed with VA-75 aboard Kitty Hawk.) The Navy used as

well VQ-1 EA-3Bs to search for Fan Song signals, with a Shrike-armed A-4 tucked in so

close that DRV radar operators would discern only a single blip. When the Fan Song went

to high PRF (pulse repetition frequency), the EA-3B would pass heading information to

the “Scooter” to shoot. In at least one case, a Fan Song then went abruptly off air, its crew

either killed or intimidated.

BELOW IRON HAND’S FIRST KILL

On December 22, 1965, pilot Captain Al Lamb and EWO Capt Jack Donovan of the 6234th TFW (Wild Weasel

Detachment) led the first successful Iron Hand hunter-killer mission to destroy a SA-2 site. Flying F-100F Super Sabre SN

58-1226, they led Spruce Flight – four 388th TFW F-105Ds piloted by flight lead Captain Don Langwell (Spruce 1), Van

Heywood (Spruce 2), Bob Bush (Spruce 3), and Art Brattkus (Spruce 4). The mission took off from Korat RTAFB at 0900

local time, to support a Rolling Thunder strike on Yen Bai, and air-refueled over Laos before proceeding NNE and turning

E after crossing into the DRV. The flight descended from 16,000ft to 300ft. The F-100 led, with the four F-105s, flying as

two pairs, weaving behind so as not to overrun the slower F-100F. The pairs were separated from each other by 2,000

to 4,000ft, trailing the F-100F by about the same distance.

Donovan detected the characteristic Fan Song signal 100 miles away from the site, and as the F-100F got closer, the signal

grew in strength. The flight descended over the DRV down to 300ft AGL, the F-100F and F-105Ds using terrain masking to

shield themselves, popping up from 300 to 1,300ft to get direction-finding cuts, and using those updates to edge closer.

In the last portion of the flight, the Vector radar warning scope was showing strong strobes reaching 2½ rings, indicating

the Fan Song was at high pulse repetition frequency (PRF) and tracking the flight. Then, in the last seconds, it hit 3 rings,

and the strobes started to curl at their ends, indicating extremely close proximity. Lamb and Donovan climbed to 2,500ft,

rolled inverted, and Lamb spotted the Fan Song fire control van camouflaged to look like a village hut, as well as “three

long, white missiles under a thatched hut.” He rolled upright and fired two pods of 2.75in rockets which landed short, but

then strafed as well with the F-100F’s 20mm cannon, exploding one missile. The yellow-orange blast marked the site for the

F-105Ds which launched their own attacks with 2.75in rockets and strafing, destroying it utterly.

The flight detected a second Fan Song signal, but, being out of weapons, turned for Korat, still at low altitude. They climbed

to 5,000ft over western NVN, then back to 16,000ft over Laos before again tanking prior to the return back to Korat.

After landing, a historic signal was sent to the Pentagon: “Wild Weasel sighted SAM site—Destroyed same.”

the air. The addition of jamming pods, while requiring rigorous formation flying for mutual

support, enabled ingressing aircraft like the Thud to go back up to medium altitudes, above

most conventional AAA.Finally, among the many missed opportunities Rolling Thunder presented for proper air

power application, there was the case of 132 SA-2 loaded canisters spotted in early May

1966 by a SAC reconnaissance drone at a barracks at Gia Thuong, near Gia Lam airport.

The cache was large enough to outfit 11 SA-2 battalions. Not surprisingly, Admiral Grant

Sharp pressed for an immediate attack, noting it would give Hanoi’s air defenders “a severe

blow.” But this time it was the JCS, not McNamara or his minions, who said no. So it went

untouched, and one wonders whose life, or at least freedom, was possibly forfeited by that

fateful decision. One of the beneficial byproducts of the Iron Hand and Wild Weasel effort was the

intimidation of SAM operators. Firing statistics indicate that SAM crews became notably

far less willing to shoot, lest they expose themselves to counterattacks that typically involved

exploding Shrikes, cluster munitions, blasts of 2.75in rockets, M-117 bombs, and even the

SAMs themselves with their large warheads and toxic, corrosive propellants. The presence

of Shrike anti-radar missile shooters resulted in lower SAM firing rates even when clear

opportunities presented themselves. Over the last year of Rolling Thunder, Shrike shooters

fired 1,146 Shrikes, claiming 370 Fan Songs destroyed or damaged: during that same period,

SAM teams fired on average only once for every three firing opportunities. Even SAM

battalion commanders were intimidated, one refusing to launch, claiming that jamming

prevented his seeing any target, even though an American airplane on his scope was plainly

visible to a visiting PAVN senior officer!

but still recognized his positioning to impede the march of the British to Ludhiana as most effective. ‘It is the most scientific move made during the war,’ he conceded, ‘whether made by accident or design.’

Still, Ranjodh Singh had thrown away an opportunity to destroy Smith’s straggling army at Bhudowal, and of then picking off isolated pockets of troops at will. The great siege train marching from Delhi would then have been an easy target. As things stood, the victory at Aliwal had completely changed the face of the campaign. Smith was gratified to hear from his political officer that the Sikhs had mostly withdrawn across the Sutlej. ‘The position of the enemy at Sobraon,’ Major Murchison reported, ‘is now the only one held by the Sikhs south of the Sutlej.’ As such, it would be the next target for Gough.

Smith was unable to move back to the main camp as quickly as he would have liked. The guns captured at Aliwal needed dealing with and that took time. He sent 47 captured Sikh guns to Ludhiana, using the transports of his own artillery for the job (most of the Sikhs’ draught animals had been killed during the battle), and kept five of the most impressive pieces with his army. He was not able to start back towards Gough until 3 February. He left Brigadier Wheeler with a force to secure the area and marched with the 16th Lancers, the 3rd and 5th Native Light Cavalry, a corps of irregular horse, the 31st, 50th and 53rd Regiments, the 47th Native Infantry, the two Gurkha battalions and 200 wounded.

Four days later, Smith was welcomed enthusiastically by Gough. The commander-in-chief was in a good mood, not only due to Smith’s success at Aliwal and his safe return, but because the first elements of the siege train from Delhi had arrived the previous day. His army was now the strongest it had ever been and he was ready to resume his campaign. The enforced period of inactivity had brought its own problems as well, as the camp had steadily

ABOVE LEFTThe 16th Lancers, although winning glory at Aliwal, also suffered the highest losses among the British units engaged, with 142 total casualties, some of which may have been inflicted by friendly fire. (Courtesy of the Council of the National Army Museum, London)

descended into squalor and it was only a matter of time until the traditional camp illnesses erupted. Smith noted with distaste the state of the camp and quietly asked permission to move his men to a new location on 8 February.

The next day, he and the other divisional commanders were summoned to Gough’s tent for orders. The details of the proposed assault did not impress Smith, as he believed the enemy was being attacked at its very strongest point. Gough’s plan seems especially questionable given his knowledge of the inherent flaw in the Sikh lines, with its weak right flank. Smith’s forebodings were to be borne out, as he made clear in a letter to his sister following the last battle of the war.

‘Our last fight,’ he confided, ‘was an awful one.’

SOBRAON

Soon after the Battle of Ferozeshah, the Sikhs had begun gathering boats to make a bridge across the Sutlej. This now joined their two camps, on the northern and southern banks of the river. The north bank was considerably higher, with the southern bank being a shallow sandy slope in many places. By 7 January at the latest, the bridge was complete, but it was initially used only for scouting parties and for spirited cavalrymen who wanted to indulge in a little skirmishing with British scouts. Over the remainder of the month, however, serious work was undertaken to set up a defensive position south of the river.

The British placed an advanced observation post at Rhodewala prior to the Battle of Sobraon, from where Gough was able to enjoy a clear view of the Sikh defences. (Anne S.K. Brown Military Collection, Brown University Library)

EVENTS

1. The initial British artillery barrage is ineffective and short-lived, forcing the

infantry to once more bear the burden of the assault.

2. At 9 a.m., on the British left, the heavily reinforced division of Sir Robert Dick

makes steady progress against the weakest section of the Sikh lines, supported by

three troops of horse artillery.

3. The Sikhs shift men to shore up their western defences.

4. The divisions of Sir Walter Gilbert and Sir Harry Smith stage a diversionary

advance, but it is quickly turned into a full-scale assault.

5. British cavalry establishes dominance over its Sikh opponents on the left flank.

Cavalry then penetrate the Sikh lines and enter the camp.

6. Smith’s men attack the strongest section of the Sikh defences and are repulsed as

many as three times before breaking through.

7. Around midday, the Sikhs begin to withdraw calmly, but the bridge of boats

across the Sutlej has been destroyed and thousands are killed or drowned while

trying to escape.

C H A P T E R T H R E E VIETNAM – OPENING MOVES32

In November 1964 the US government was faced with a deep dilemma

over Vietnam. President Lyndon B Johnson and Defence Secretary

Robert S McNamara received a report from the Vietnam Working

Group, headed by Assistant Secretary of State William Bundy, warning

that the continuation of a non‑communist South Vietnam would depend

on US military action to ‘defeat North Vietnam and probably communist

China’. Such a commitment ‘would involve high risks of a major conflict

in Asia that could not be confined to air and naval action but would almost

inevitably involve a Korean‑scale ground action and possible even the use

of nuclear weapons’.Anxious to avoid such a disastrous outcome, the Group suggested a

negotiated settlement, or sharply increased conventional military pressure,

or a combination of the two. The latter course was adopted and it shaped

the US ‘stop‑start’ policy towards North Vietnam for the following eight

years. A further, apocryphal warning was the CIA’s judgement that the

nature of North Vietnam’s decentralised, agriculture‑based economy and

the Hanoi leadership’s belief that collapse of the South Vietnamese regime

was imminent would render bombing ineffective as a means of altering

North Vietnam’s determination to await its chance of an invasion.

Frustrated by the complexities of the situation, but also unwilling

to withdraw US forces from the country altogether, President Johnson

approved a two‑phase plan which began with armed reconnaissance

RF‑101C‑65‑MC 56‑0068, in full 45th TRS ‘Polka Dots’ markings on bare metal surfaces, is seen heading a line‑up of squadron aircraft during an exercise in the USA in the early 1960s. The Vietnam War made huge demands upon the reconnaissance community, extending the RF‑101C’s service life well beyond 1965, when its replacement by the RF‑4C had originally been scheduled. Their nine years at war also left the combat‑weary airframes with only around five years of useful ANG service before retirement (USAF)

flights against Viet Cong infiltration routes into Laos, combined with

reprisal strikes if US air bases in South Vietnam were attacked. Phase Two

would be a sustained aerial campaign against North Vietnam to force

the communists into a peace settlement that respected the sovereignty of

South Vietnam.By February 1965, provocative Viet Cong attacks on US facilities

at Pleiku AB, near Saigon, made the use of escalating reprisal strikes

politically inevitable. For USAF RF‑101 pilots, this involved one of the

most crucial missions of the war – finding the enemy and conveying that

information to control centres for it to be converted into targets. The

combat environment in which this task was to be performed could hardly

have been more challenging. The Voodoo was one of the first US jet aircraft to participate in the

Vietnam War. RF‑101As of the 17th TRS had visited the area in 1957‑58,

and Voodoos were intended to replace the RF‑84F Thunderflashes of the

67th TRW’s 15th TRS ‘Cotton Pickers’ at Kadena and the 45th TRS

‘Polka Dots’ at Misawa AB on the island of Honshu, Japan, whose aircraft

began to arrive in mid‑1958. A USAF comparative evaluation showed that

the RF‑101’s superior speed and the versatility of its camera equipment

gave it a major operational advantage over the RF‑84F. Nevertheless,

the Thunderflash had a useful camera suite and long range, and in late

1962 Thirteenth Air Force asked unsuccessfully for eight to supplement its

limited RF‑101C numbers. Requests for one or two additional RF‑101Cs

were also denied, as the other USAF commands hung on to their scarce

Voodoos. It was not until 1 April 1963 that two more 45th TRS aircraft

joined the Operation Able Mable team in Thailand, bringing its total

strength to just six Voodoos. From March 1960 the 15th TRS was attached to the 18th TFW, which

was part of the 313th Air Division, while the 45th TRS was assigned to

the 39th Air Division so that the 67th TRW could be deactivated that

same year. Their vast operational area of interest covered Japan, Korea

and Southeast Asia down as far as South Vietnam, so long high‑altitude transit flights were commonplace. Fortunately, the Voodoo’s cockpit was comfortable by fighter standards. Pilots sometimes photographed Soviet bombers, patrol aircraft and intelligence‑gathering ships. Very precise navigation was required, assisted by TACAN, an ARA‑25 direction finder and an AN/ASN‑6 navigation computer, but dependent mainly on piloting skills. In‑flight refuelling became essential for most missions, and RF‑101Cs were well‑equipped for that, having been designed at a time when the USAF was transitioning from drogue‑trailing KB‑50s and KC‑97s to flying boom‑equipped KC‑135A Stratotankers. An extending

C H A P T E R T H R E E

VIETNAM – OPENING MOVESThe 45th TRS decorated some of its aircraft with nicknames, and this habit would eventually become more prevalent during 1969. RF‑101C‑65‑MC 56‑0079 MARY ANN BURNS (inspired by a tribute song to a large lady with a reputation) was assigned to 1Lt Fred Muesegaes (squatting, front left), and it was among the first Voodoos to make an Able Mable deployment to Don Muang RTAFB near Bangkok in June 1960, as seen here. Maj Ken Habst and 1Lt Jack Weatherby (front row) are seen with Capt Ralph de Lucia, Capt Bill Whitten and 1Lt John Linihan (rear, from left to right). When the squadron’s colourful markings were covered with camouflage paint, the pilots preserved them to a degree by wearing polka dot neckerchiefs and helmets or painting reduced versions on the fin caps of a few aircraft (USAF)

C H A P T E R F I V E WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN68

FLYING BANTAMAlthough there was a postwar decline in military aircraft orders, significant funds were devoted to the creation of experimental aircraft, dubbed “X-planes.” The war had generated very adventurous research for high-speed flight, but little time to prove many of those radical designs and theories in the air. Lacking modern computer simulation, for manufacturers the only solution was to build pure research prototypes and allow intrepid test pilots to take them to their limits.

Bell’s rocket-powered X-1 and X-2, with the Douglas D-558, had taken maximum speeds to Mach 1, then Mach 2, and explored controllability at high altitude and high Mach numbers, where searing temperatures required completely new approaches to airframe construction. The Douglas X-3 Stiletto, with tiny wings and a slender, pointed low-drag fuselage almost 67ft in length was also intended to explore the use of jet engines for more sustained Mach 2 endurance. It was impossible to find suitably-powerful turbojets at the time, and the X-3 first flew in 1952, demonstrating a take-off speed of 260mph, extremely difficult handling characteristics, and a severe lack of power, which limited the speed of this impressively-futuristic design to Mach 1.21 in a dive. On several of its 54 flights it did reveal the potentially-fatal problem known as inertia coupling, which would cause an aircraft to lose control completely, sometimes with fatal results.

The twin‑jet N‑24/F‑89 Scorpion was acquired by the USAF as a replacement for the P‑61 Black Widow. Jack Northrop’s last design for his company, and one that kept it alive after his departure with orders for 1,052 aircraft, the Scorpion was persistently underpowered. The F‑89 entered production in 1949 and served for ten years, these particular examples being J‑models of Air Defense Command’s 59th Fighter Interceptor Squadron based at Goose Bay, Canada, in the late 1950s. C H A P T E R F I V E WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN

Northrop constructed the next in the X-plane series, and it extended aspects of the flying wing idea to one of the smallest jet aircraft ever built, although the N-26 X-4 Bantam had a conventional fuselage and vertical tail. It was initially proposed in 1946 as an amalgam of Northrop’s interest in flying wings and the USAAF’s knowledge of the Me 163 tailless rocket fighter, after captured examples were examined. It owed much to the XP-79 series of designs, and its long-term purpose was to study the behavior of airflow over the wing during transonic flight. The resulting Project MX-810, or Project Skylancer, attracted a contract for two swept-wing prototypes.

Like de Havilland in Britain with the similar DH 108, Northrop’s team, led by Arthur Lusk, opted for jet power rather than a rocket motor. The X-4s had split wingtip flap airbrake installations placed inboard and elevon controls like other Northrop flying wings. Two Westinghouse XJ30 turbojets, used in the XP-79, provided a total of 3,200lbs of thrust. This was adequate for lively performance from the tiny X-4 with a wingspan of 29ft 9in., weighing only 5,500lbs when empty.

The two white X-4s, 46-676 and 46-677, were built while Northrop continued to work on the XP-79B. He used a similar magnesium skin for the X-4 wing, but abandoned the prone pilot position and provided a fighter-type bubble canopy. The first aircraft was flown by Charles Tucker on December 16, 1948, and persistent mechanical problems, oil leaks, and excessive maintenance on the early, temperamental jet engines limited it to only ten flights before it had to be cannibalized to keep 46-677 active. Northrop and USAF pilots flew it on 20 occasions, finding that the X-4 tended to pitch up sharply at transonic speeds. A further 82 flights were made under the auspices of NACA after its instrumentation had been squeezed into the second aircraft in place of some extra fuel tank space. Spin recovery parachutes were installed.

Among the early USAF pilots to fly the X-4 was Capt Chuck Yeager, who was impressed by the way the aircraft’s large airbrakes held its speed to 250mph in a near-vertical dive, as well as their proficiency in rapidly-decelerating the jet if it approached dangerous instability at speed. However, when he reached Mach 0.92 the little

Technicians work on the X‑4 at Edwards AFB in November 1948. Unlike several early X‑planes, the X‑4 had an ejection seat and good visibility from the cockpit. The aircraft had a series of red bands painted all over it for early tests. The X‑4s were retired in September 1953, having proved that until better auto‑stabilization systems were available, the tailless configuration was unsuitable for supersonic or high transonic speeds. Both examples survived and were finally displayed at the USAF Academy (46‑676) and the USAF Museum in Dayton, Ohio (46‑677). (USAF)

produced experienced various control failures, so the program was ended

in January 1946. Jack Northrop reported that “in spite of its peculiar

configuration, which departed appreciably from the all-wing ideal, it

had quite good flight characteristics.” One of these was that the JB-1

developed so much lift in ground effect that it was often very difficult

to persuade it to land. The same characteristic was later noted in the

XB-35 and YB-49, which tended to “float” at minimum approach speed,

causing a potential overshoot. Like so many other concurrent designs,

the JB-10 was let down by engines that never developed adequate,

reliable performance, and by a series of control problems.Although World War II had given Northrop the chance to flight-test

many of his innovative projects experimentally, the company’s relatively

conventional Black Widow was its most successful contribution to that

conflict. In financial terms, profits from manufacturing B-17 engine

cowlings exceeded those from the 1,000-unit P-61 contract awarded to

Northrop by the USAAF, and the company’s relationship with Boeing

was to have valuable long-term benefits.

An XP‑79B prone pilot, lying in a very cramped cockpit that was stressed for 12g and peering out through the transparent nose area, controlled pitch and roll with a crossbar that had hand‑grips at each end. He used foot pedals to operate the rudder/airbrakes, which in turn were powered by bellows controls driven by wingtip venturi air inlets that also appeared on the second XP‑56. The pilot’s head was supported by a large chin‑rest. A quadricycle undercarriage replaced skids on the sole XP‑79B from July 1943 to provide adequate stability. (National Museum of the Air Force 110516F‑XN622‑003ain)

Northrop’s JB‑1 (“Jet Bomb”) was a direct derivative of the MX‑324 “Rocket Wing”, with magnesium and aluminum construction and programmable automatic gyro/servo controls. The explosives were housed in two cylindrical shapes, faired into the wing center‑section. A piloted glider version was also built to prove the basic concept. C H A P T E R T W O THE NORTHROP SOLUTION

Northrop’s best hope of success with the flying wing concept arose out

of fears that Britain would be overrun by Nazi Germany, thus requiring

a fleet of massive transatlantic bombers to attack occupied Europe

directly from US territory. This philosophy, based on the theory that

“the bomber will always get through,” was severely tested when the

Eighth Air Force’s daylight attacks on Germany began in 1942. It

gave rise to Boeing’s B-29 Superfortress, with a 3,000-mile range,

in 1940 and its successor after competition with Boeing proposals,

Convair’s 200-ton, 230ft-span B-36 Peacemaker with a 10,000-mile

range. The B-36’s size, weight, and range required up to ten engines,

vast quantities of fuel and heavy defensive armament due to its limited

speed. As a mainly conventional design, its development time was

expected to be fairly short. From the outset, Jack Northrop felt that he could reach the required

specification with a smaller, simpler aircraft. After meetings with AMC

officers, he was invited to propose an alternative all-wing design, the

XB-35, on the understanding that it would take longer to develop and

could perhaps replace the B-36, thanks to its proposed ability to carry

10,000lbs of bombs on two-way Atlantic crossings.Jack Northrop, in close contact with Gen Henry “Hap” Arnold,

Chief of the USAAC, throughout this period, assured the latter that:

“We can build transport or bomber aircraft of any size over 25,000lbs

gross weight which will do the same job as a similar airplane of

conventional design and have a high speed of 75 to 100mph

greater. I think we can obtain the same high speeds as attained with

conventional aircraft with, roughly, half the amount of power.”

C H A P T E R T H R E E

BIG WING – B-35Northrop’s original large flying wing proposal emphasized the cost‑saving possibilities of a one‑piece unit without extra fuselage and tail structures. It also advocated the benefits of even payload weight distribution, rather than having to reinforce one part of an airframe to carry bombs or cargo, and claimed a 20 percent increase in speed over a conventional aircraft with the same powerplants and payload. With the N‑9M, the basis of that concept began to be realized. (Terry Panopalis collection)

Something in the multiverse has shattered, and now the universe is bleeding. Throughout Mega-City One there are reports of invaders wreaking havoc. Celtic barbarians in Ezquerra Block. Russian nobles in Apetown. And rumours of fragments of other universes, waiting to be claimed.

Head to the streets of Mega-City One with Judge Dredd: Helter Skelter, a new miniatures board game combining Martin Wallace’s critically-acclaimed Wildlands rules with the worlds of 2000 AD. Four unique factions bring iconic characters from Sláine, Nikolai Dante, and Strontium Dog crashing into Mega-City One, all intent on finding the shattered fragments of their own universe and crushing anyone who gets in their way.

Things are going to get rough, but one thing is certain: no matter what universe you are from, you still have to answer to the Law!

MEET THE FACTIONS

June, 1944. Through the D-Day landings, the Allies have seized a foothold on the beaches of Normandy. Now you must lead your troops forward as you push deeper into France and drive the German forces back. You will face intense resistance, machine gun fire, and mortar bombardment, but a great commander can turn the situation to their advantage!

Undaunted: Normandy is a deck-building game that places you and your opponent in command of American or German forces, fighting through a series of missions critical to the outcome of World War II. Use your cards to seize the initiative, bolster your forces, or control your troops on the battlefield. Strong leadership can turn the tide of battle in your favour, but reckless decisions could prove catastrophic, as every casualty you take removes a card from your deck. Take charge amidst the chaos of battle, hold fast in the face of opposition, and remain undaunted.

Empires have fallen, and the land is broken. The great oathmarks that once stood as testaments to the allegiances and might of nations have crumbled into ruin. In this lost age, fealty and loyalty are as valuable as gold and as deadly as cold iron, and war is ever-present.

Created by Joseph A. McCullough, designer of Frostgrave and Frostgrave: Ghost Archipelago, Oathmark is a mass-battle fantasy wargame that puts you in command of the fantasy army you’ve always wanted, whether a company of stalwart dwarves or a mixed force with proud elves, noble men, and wild goblins standing shoulder-to-shoulder in the battle-line. Fight through an integrated campaign system and develop your realms from battle to battle, adding new territories, recruiting new troop types, and growing to eclipse your rivals… or lose what you fought so hard to gain and fall as so many would-be emperors before you.

Welcome to Reality’s Edge, a wargame so shiny you are going to need mirror shades. Set in a dystopian cyberpunk future, players take on the role of a data-jack, a mercenary hacker who leads a small team of trusted operatives and disposable freelancers. Funded by shadow backers, the data-jacks accept jobs from faceless clients for profit, glory, and better chrome...always better chrome.

Battles take place in the concrete jungle known as the Sprawl, but data-jacks must remain wary of the threat posed by Cyberspace. Hacking rules are pivotal to the game, with data nodes, robots, machines, and even enemy chrome presenting potential targets for a cunning data-jack. No-one plugged into Cyberspace is entirely safe from intrusion, and the electronic sprites and digital djinn you can deploy alongside your team can be just as dangerous as any mercenary or assassin.

Gameplay focuses on individual characters, with each skirmish offering you the opportunity to earn experience and equipment for your data-jack and operatives. A wide range of items and upgrades are available, from advanced weaponry and synthetics through to cyber-implants, biological enhancements, clones, and much more. This is a world obsessed with whether something can be done, not whether it should.
