When the young Sultan Abdulmecid I. decided in 1843to let build the famous Dolmabahce Palace on the edge ofthe Bosphor in Istanbul, he also thought about a manufactureto produce fabrics for upholsteries and to let knot the carpetsfor his palace.

In 1844 he decided to establish the Royal Manufacture inHereke. Here were knotted the fine Hereke Carpets for usingin the Dolmabahce Palace and after that for the exclusive useof the Ottomon Court and their guests.

The best knot masters and designsers of the whole OttomanEmpire, who were invited to settle in Hereke, developed mostbeautiful and colourful patterns, which were unique in the world.By using silk from Bursa in warp, weft and knot and byestablishing a special knot and weaving technique they wereable to knot finest silken carpets, which even today are the finestsilken carpets of the whole world.
