MAGNETIC PARTICLE INSPECTION

Magnetic crack detection is a non-destructive test method, which is used to detect surface flaws and indications just below the material surface. This method is applicable on ferrous or magnetisable parts and can be done with colour contrast or fluorescent (UV light required) with either a dry or wet method. Magnavis Visible Magnetic Particle Inspection Products

Magnavis is the preferred visible particle inspection method for the detection of fine surface and slightly subsurface

discontinuities in ferrous materials. Magnavis magnetic particles are finely controlled to ensure maximum sensitivity and

to produce vivid indications under daylight conditions where black light and fluorescent particle use is not possible.

Liquid penetrant inspection or LPI is a non-destructive test method where penetrant, due to its capillary function, penetrates in all faults, which are accessible on the surface. This test method is applicable to all solid non-porous materials and can both be applied with color contrast (Red Dye) or fluorescent (UV light required). Autoglo AL-4B Penetrant is a biodegradable, fluorescent, water based penetrant and can be used in many applications

requiring a low sensitivity penetrant, combined with excellent washability. It's superior washability and easy removal from

rough non-ferrous parts and complex shapes makes it ideal for use in the automotive industry. Autoglo AL-4B has been

found to be useful in applications where traditional petroleum solvent based penetrants may attack the test surface, such

as on plastics. It can also be used as a leaker penetrant to detect through leaks in welded tanks and containers. (Use

with plastic parts should be tested to confirm AL-4B compatibility.) AL-4B fluoresces a greenish-yellow colour under UV

light.

Tiede Liquid Penetrant

You can rely on Tiede colour-contrast penetrants to find surface-open flaws and defects in virtually any non-porous

material. They have outstanding penetrating characteristics, producing vivid red indications of faults which can easily be

seen with the naked eye.

Bycotest Liquid Penetrant

Bycotest PT products can cope with temperatures ranging -15° C to + 200°C. With the Bycotest products

Tiede PWL-1 Red Penetrant PWL-1 is a water-washable and solvent-removable red colour contrast penetrant that provides maximum reliability in locating surface-open flaws and defects. Crack comparators assist in measuring the size of LPI indications and used to measure the actual size of indications

Test Blocks LPI

De Looper NDO sells test blocks which allow for the comparing of penetrants used within the LPI inspection process. We

provide different test blocks for use in measuring penetrant performance.

Aluminium Test Block

The Aluminium Test Block is an aluminium test piece that measures 3” x 2” x 3/8” with a 1/8” wide groove that splits the face in half. The test block is used to check the strength of “in-use” penetrants. This is done by processing one half of the block with “used” penetrant, and the other half with fresh penetrant. Stainless Steel Test Block The stainless steel test block offers a simple and convenient comparator for monitoring washability of water-wash or post-emulsified penetrants. The “grit blasted” finish provides a rough surface which will retain background when the removability of a product has decreased when compared to fresh material. Test Panels

Test panels provide feedback on the continuing sensitivity and performance of your penetrant processing system. Ni-Cr

test panels are ideal penetrant sensitivity comparators. They come in pairs, with set crack depths. Ni-Cr test panels allow

"in use" Zyglo penetrants to be compared against "new, unused" product to determine if the penetrant is performing

properly. The test panel is meant to detect "sudden" penetrant system changes and to ascertain that all parts of the

penetrant processing system are functioning in the proper manner.

Timers and Monitoring Devices

Timers and monitoring devices insure that your process dwell times and LPI material concentrations are within

specification. De Looper NDO offers a variety of professional test equipment used for monitoring and controlling the

dwell times and concentration levels of materials used throughout the penetrant inspection process.

Magnaflux Hydrometer Water Based Developers such as ZP-5B Water Suspendable Developer and ZP-14A Water Soluble Developer are designed for optimum performance within a specific concentration range. To control the concentration, the specific gravity is measured using the Magnaflux Hydrometer. If the hydrometer reading is high, the concentration is high and water is generally added. If the reading is low, developer is added to the bath. PN 5857


Refractometer

A refractometer is an easy to use laboratory or field device to measure the concentration of the Hydrophilic Remover (ZR-10B) in water and is required to meet Pratt and Whitney and GE concentration specifications for hydrophilic removers. Penecert Testing

Non Destructive Testing (NDT) specifications require the regular testing of in-use penetrant materials to ensure that

they are maintained in their optimum condition. Magnaflux PeneCertTM offers a speedy and convenient testing

service for all in-use materials. The benefits include:

1. Collect samples for each in-use material to be tested, collect a sample – De Looper NDO are able to

supply bottles for this purpose. If the material is not manufactured by Magnaflux/Bycotest, please also

include a sample of the unused material for use as a testing standard.

2. Label bottles fill out a label (supplied with our bottles) and attach to the appropriate sample bottle(s). Please ensure

that each bottle cap is tightened securely.

3. PeneCertTM menu fill out the PeneCertTM menu sheet, indicating the testing that you require. Include this sheet with your

sample(s). Please use one sheet per penetrant sample, copying the sheet, if necessary, for multiple

samples

4. Send samples send your samples to De Looper NDO, Bukkumweg 24M, NL-5081 CT HILVARENBEEK. For

convenience, please use the pre-printed address labels supplied with your bottles for labelling your

sample package.

5. Results We will endeavour to despatch your results within 14 workdays of receiving your samples. If you prefer,

we can fax or email your results - please indicate your preference on the PeneCertTM menu sheet and

Gloss Meter The Stargloss Glossmeter is essential where an aesthetic appearance of the coating finish is required and to ensure uniformity of the surface finish. The gloss value is determined by directing a light, which has a similar wavelength to the human eye, at the test surface and measuring the amount of specular reflection. Gloss is measured with angles of 60° and 20°. The 60° angle is universal for all applications. The 20° angle gives improved differentiation of measurement on high-gloss coatings above 70 gloss units. Wet Film Gauge (stainless) The Tricomb Stainless Steel Wet Film Gauge ensures the quality control of the paint thickness while the coating is still wet. Applying too much coating can be expensive. Wet film measurements are also useful for coatings where the dry film thickness can only be measured destructively. Measurements are made by firstly zeroing the Gauge on -50µm (-2mils). This is to allow for the film backing. Place the replicated area between the anvils and gently lower the moveable anvil onto the film. The reading can now be taken, giving you the average peak-to-valley height of the blasted profile. Roughness Comparator The ISO Surface Roughness Comparator is a precision Nickel Comparator Plate that conforms to International Standard ISO 8503 and ASTM D4417 for grit and shot-blast surface roughness comparison measurement. When steel has been blast-cleaned, the surface consists of random irregularities with peaks and valleys that are not easily characterised. Experts have recommended that the profile should be identified as dimpled (shot-blast) or angular (grit-blast), and that they should be graded as Fine, Medium or Coarse with each grade being defined by limits specified in ISO 8503. These characteristics are considered to give sufficient distinguishing features for most painting requirements. PN R2006

If they are not removed prior to painting, chemical reactions can result in blister formation and accumulations of rust that destroy the adhesion between the substrate and the applied protective coating. This contamination can be tested quickly and easily using the Bresle Test. STAGE 3: SURFACE CLEANLINESS ISO 8502-3: Assessment of dust on steel surfaces prepared for painting (pressure-sensitive tape method). Dust Test (PS201) Assess the quantity and size of dust particles on steel surfaces prepared for painting. Dust particles on blast-cleaned steel surfaces may reduce the adhesion of applied coatings, and by absorbing moisture may promote the corrosion of the steel surface. Pinhole and Holiday Detectors

Pinhole Detector The Pintech Pinhole Detector is multi-voltage (9V, 67.5V, 90V) and uses the wet sponge principle to detect through-pinholes, cracks and damaged areas on non-conductive coatings on conductive substrates. These flaws would eventually lead to corrosion and premature failure of the coating. Operation is by a wet sponge moistened with a wetting agent, being moved over the coating. The wetting agent penetrates any pinhole and makes a conductive path through to the substrate. The Pintech detects this conductive path and indicates that a pinhole has been detected by sounding an audible alarm and giving a visual warning by a red flashing indicator. Exposure Accessories

Wire type IQIs to EN 462-1:1994 The European standard, which was introduced in 1994, replaces well-known national standards such as DIN 54 109 and BS 3971. The wire diameters and system of numbering follow the previous DIN practice. IE-NDT Ltd manufactures EN 462-1 IQIs in steel, aluminium, copper and models W6, W10 and W13 in titanium. Wire type IQIs to EN 462-1:1994 manufactured by IE-NDT Ltd. comprise seven parallel wires 10, 25 or 50mm long, which are encapsulated in thin, transparent plastic along with a radio-opaque identification plaque. Each IQI is supplied in a wallet. PN 10.24.02

ASTM E-747 Wire type IQIs These IQIs comprise six parallel wires, encapsulated in thin PVC with two radio-opaque identification plaques. Each IQI is batch numbered and is supplied with a Declaration of Conformity in a storage wallet. PN 10.24.20

EN 462-5 ASTM E 2002 Duplex IQI For measuring image unsharpness, it is a particularly useful tool for establishing and monitoring the performance of radioscopic (real-time) systems. The CEN standard, EN 13068 makes its use mandatory in certain cases. The IQI consists of 13 wire pairs embedded in rigid plastic. The wires of platinum and tungsten and are exactly spaced to correspond to the diameter of each pair. PN 10.24.081

ASME/ASTM E-1025 Plaque type IQIs (penetrameters) For all practical purposes, plaque type penetrameters manufactured in accordance with ASTM E 1025 are now acceptable when working to: ASME V, ASTM E 142, ASME SE-142, ASME section VIII, API 650 and API 1104. The penetrameters are characterised by having three holes: 1x, 2x and 4x the thickness (T) of the material from which the penetrameter is made, with minimum diameters of 0.01, 0.02 and 0.04in. They are available in a wide variety of materials: stainless steel, aluminium, aluminium-bronze, brass, copper, cupro-nickel, inconel, magnesium, monel, nickel, phosphor bronze, titanium, hastelloy, Haynes 25 (cobalt) and waspaloy PN 10.24.07

Penetrameters (IQIs) to ASTM E-1742 (MIL-STD) These penetrameters were formerly the subject of MIL-STD-453. In common with the cost cutting measures of many governments, the US military has delegated most standardisation activities to a civilian/commercial body. So, MIL-STD-453 has now become ASTM E-1742. The penetrameter design and numbering system remain the same. The penetrameters have three holes: 1x, 2x and 4x the plaque thickness, a material identification (e.g. FE) and the penetrameter number in lead. The overall length is slightly greater than the ASTM E 1025 types. PN 10.24.11

EN 462-2 Step/hole IQIs The EN 462-2 IQIs manufactured by IE-NDT Ltd comprise six plaques, measuring 5 x 7mm, 7 x 10mm or 15 x 15mm, which are encapsulated in transparent plastic along with an identification monogram in cast white metal. Each plaque has one or two through-drilled holes whose diameter is the same as the plaque thickness. The IQIs are supplied in a wallet with a Declaration of Conformity. PN 10.24.41 / 42 / 43 / 44
