INCREASING DEMAND ON SOUND QUALITY

" Due to major changes in the recording industry, live performance has once again taken a very important place in the music industry.

Today’s artists are often moving from studio to stage and back again far more frequently than in the past, and are expecting to find, in their live performance, if not the exact sound of their records, then certainly the wellbalanced, detailed sound of top quality studio reproduction.

Digital technologies have increased the performance quality of hi-fi installations at home and in the car, as well as of personal players, thus generating a demand for improved sound quality in concert halls.

Sound professionals are facing the challenge of satisfying clients on both sides of the stage: providing the artists with the best conditions for the expression of their talents as well as displaying the musical shading of a live show for the audience.

The new generation of APG products is the result of a thorough knowledge of performance in sound reproduction. Sonic quality is not a subjective notion when considering criteria such as phase, bandwidth, frequency response linearity, and all non distortion-related criteria.

These fundamental considerations have been taken into account and allow APG products to combine work with pleasure every time an APG sound system powers into action.

The demands of professional users are constantly evolving toward products that combine high sonic performance and sophisticated ergonomics that enable them to handle all the constraints imposed by the site with no compromise in performance or handling..

As has been the case for quite some years now, APG continues to provide answers and solutions to these issues, with passion and objectivity, and as always, with no compromise.

It is our ambition to contribute to the technical evolution of our industry, but always with the artistic side of our work in sight."

APG works closely with a select group of prestigious transducer manufacturers, who are capable of guaranteeing the strict manufacturing tolerances induced by the development criteria. Final tuning and proofing of the system is conducted by our beta-testers in real-world situations.

The APG range is entirely devoted to the professionals of the industry. Its diversity allows anyone to find the products and compose the system the most adapted to a specific application and working condition.

The APG product line comprises a comprehensive range of loudspeakers and dedicated processors designed to cover the whole range of professional sound requirements. For those who want to further explore the territories of specific applications, the APG R&D team offers its complete manufacturer’s knowledge to answer your specific requirements.

Scientific research based on mathematical analysis of all the loudspeaker operating parameters has provided guidance for the conception of specific loudspeaker processors, which guarantee flawless reliability of the systems.

The SpeakersThe speaker range is built around three main technologies and arranged in eight series.Coaxial technology equips the multi-purpose DISPERSION series and the MICRO AXIAL range of first class installation loudspeakers.ISOTOP™ technology is used in the MATRIX ARRAY series, in the ISOLINE line array, in the “plug & play” BEAM series and the SECTOR line-source speakers. The D’Appolito principle is used in the MICRO series and the Matrix Array technology.A comprehensive line of SUBWOOFERS provides accurate low frequency reinforcement for the various types of sound and the required coverage in the given configurations.

TECHNOLOGY

If the words « audiophile » and « high fidelity » were not so overused, they would perfectly describe the sonic experience delivered by APG speakers.

The APG range is developed around three technologies: Isotop™ , coaxial, and d’Appolito and is organized in eight series of speakers whose common thread is sonic purity.

Coaxial TechnologyCoaxial technology consists of two loudspeakers on the same diffusion axis, thus resulting in linearity for both amplitude and phase curves and in a perfectly consistency acoustic field even in nearfiled listening.

The coaxial principle has become one of the technological foundations of APG since the launch of the VS1 (first coaxial speaker with integrated horn) in 1991. Since then, APG has developed a unique know-how in the optimisation of this technology which has been implemented directly in the coaxial speakers and indirectly in the development of the Isotop™ driver, APG’s proprietary compression driver.

Isotop™ TechnologyIsotop™ technology comprises a 6.5" cone driver / HF 1" driver which generates a real constant phase wavefront.

The Isotop™ driver provides a real continuous 300Hz to 19KHz bandwidth with highly superior SPL capability and much lower distortion than traditional compression drivers.

The Isotop™ technology equips all FOH systems in Matrix Array, Isoline, Beam Series & Sector Series.

The D'Appolito BaffleThe D’Appolito baffle enables directivity control without the use of a horn. The directivity is controlled lower down in the frequency range while limiting the distortion and the diffractions caused by a physical horn. Furthermore, the close coupling of the two transducers affords a significant gain in efficiency.

K-Horn TechnologyK-Horn technology is a complex acoustic load designed for subwoofers and low frequency speakers.

It consists of loading a double interactive chamber with a K-horn. This exclusive technology provides a significant increase in gain, between 4 and 6 dB, compared to the conventional bass reflex load and direct radiation.

This technology has been designed for the new generation "TB" subwoofer family.

The UL115B is the dedicated bass speaker of the UNILINE system which also comprises the UL210 “line array” speaker. It contains a single high power 15” neodymium driver mounted in a double chamber band-pass speaker enclosure. The front chamber opens onto a K-Horn design. This complex design provides an optimal efficiency gain as well as excellent control over the diaphragm displacement.

This combination results in a superior dynamic capacity and an SPL gain of over 6dB compared to a traditional direct-radiating vented enclosure.

The UL115B subwoofer has been designed for low frequency reinforcement from 45 – 160 Hz. The frequency cross-over with UL210 is tuned between 80Hz and 110 Hz depending on configuration. It is possible to extend LF still further by using the TB118S or TB218S subwoofers.

In applications where the bass speakers do not need to be flown, the UL115B can be replaced by APG TB115S or TB215S subwoofers. In venues or sites where speakers must be flown, it is possible to replace a classical subwoofer by a UL115B bass speaker.

All speakers are K-Horn-loaded, thus ensuring perfect compatibility, whatever the combination.

The ergonomic 4-point rigging system makes it easy to fly or groundstack the UL115B. Cardioid configurations are also made possible thanks to this system, and a SpeakonTM connector on the front makes cabling quick and easy.

The UL210 is the “line array” speaker of the UNILINE system which also comprises the dedicated UL115B bass speaker. UNILINE has been developed as a very high precision and highly modular system. From an acoustic point of view, APG’s Isotop™ technology generates an increasing vertical directivity index sound field in the mid-high range from 450H to 19kHz. This results in flawless line source coupling, which in turn makes UNILINE perfectly adapted to all applications from short to very long throw applications.

The UNILINE can be used in 3 modes. In "standalone" mode, UL210 is ideal for medium power broadband voice and music applications. In "extended" mode, UL210 is combined with UL115B or with a subwoofer for high power music applications. In "complete mode", UL210 is combined with UL115B and infra bass subwoofers for very high power and live music applications.

Handling and transport features are designed to reduce significantly rigging time with still providing maximum security.

UNILINE can be used with only three UL210 speakers for small venues. The rigging system is designed to fly up to twenty-four UL210 speakers to cover (with high power) large venues or outdoor spaces. A wide variety of UL210/UL115B configurations are possible thanks to the modularity of the system, either flown or stacked, which offers a virtually unlimited number of combinations for optimal coverage of just about any site.

A preset bank is available for the digital processors DMS26.

The APG Sector Series is characterized by its outstanding performance in terms of directivity, and atypical acoustic beam generated in the mid/ high bandwidth.

The SC25 is the ideal alternative solution to small size line arrays commonly used in vocal applications.

The SC25 is a line source column speaker. From an acoustic point of view the SC25 loudspeaker features the same vertical arrangement that can be found in small line arrays. It is fitted 6 x ISOTOP™ drivers offering a fixed curvature radius resulting in a 25° vertical acoustic beam in the high frequency band. It is particularly efficient for high precision long throw applications or in difficult acoustic environments.

The application field of this speaker is very wide: vocal reproduction for stadiums, house of worship, cathedrals, large outdoor sites, high precision reproduction for indoor theatres, convention centres, opera houses, etc.

Since it uses the APG ISOTOPTM technology, this loudspeaker can be used as complement (side fill or delay) in FOH systems constituted of MATRIX ARRAY, UNILINE or BEAM speakers.

For low and very low frequency reinforcement, the following subs are recommended: SUB138P, SUB238S and TB115S.

The 3000C is a compact wide band horn-loaded speaker. It has been the subject of intensive development on passive filtering in order to achieve the best sonic performance in a full range mono amplified system.

The 3000C is a 3-way system comprising an 18" cone driver loaded in bass reflex in a significant volume for an extended bandwidth in low frequencies; a 6.5" cone driver for a perfect reproduction of the full mid-range; and a 1" compression driver for clear and precise reproduction of high frequencies.

The 3000C model is ideal for high quality sound reinforcement in mid-size venues. Moreover, the directivity pattern of the asymmetric mid/high horn naturally concentrates the acoustic energy towards the front listening zone without having to incline the loudspeaker itself. Therefore the reverberated energy coming from ceilings is reduced, which increases the intelligibility in difficult acoustical environments.

Its ergonomics make it ideally suited for fixed installations. However, the 3000C can also be used as a mobile system, and has proved itself to be a highly versatile solution for medium power high precision applications. Using the APG IsotopTM technology it is fully compatible as complement (front fill or delay) for large configurations set up with MATRIX ARRAY or UNILINE systems.

For low and very low frequency extension, the recommended subs are SUB238S, TB115S, TB118S and TB215S.

The DX12 is a compact, versatile, coaxial monitor speaker. The coaxial driver alignment offers a perfectly coherent wide acoustic field even in nearfield listening. The result is a very homogeneous conical coverage and a limited feedback effect.

The DX12 speaker combines high acoustic performance with sophisticated ergonomics. The 12”/ 1” couple confers to the DX12 a very high sonic definition and an excellent size/power ratio. The DX12 uses the same 1” driver as the DX15, in order to make the two products compatible and complementary, respecting the same criteria of linearity in frequency, phase and power.

The asymmetric cabinet design enables two different angles as a floor monitor (30° for near-field and 45° for far-field applications), or it may be pole-mounted or flown for use as a FOH, delay or in-fill system. The DX12 meets professional requirements in terms of versatility, compactness, light weight, and handling. It offers a low profile as a stage monitor, simple flying system, ultra-fast setup, and fully protected cables and plugs etc.

In full range use, the DX12 is perfectly suited to vocal applications and stage monitoring, distributed systems or as a FOH complement (delay or front fill). Because of the size of its transducers, the DX12 is also ideal for high precision stage monitoring in jazz and acoustic music. When combined with subwoofers, the DX12 becomes a powerful, compact and easily transportable system ideal for medium-throw FOH applications.

For low and very low frequency reinforcement, the following subs are recommended: SUB238P, TB115S, TB118S, and TB215S.

The MX4N is a fixed installation speaker equipped with coaxial technology. The coaxial alignment of loudspeakers offers a perfectly coherent wide acoustic field. It results a very homogeneous conical coverage even in nearfield applications.

The MX4N is an extremely versatile product suited to a number of different FOH applications, with or without subwoofer. The ergonomics and the multiple optional accessories make it easy to work with architectural constraints: it can simply be put on the floor, suspended alone or in pairs, or fixed to the wall or the ceiling; it can receive special treatment for tropical environments or special colour coatings.

This loudspeaker is characterized by a very advantageous size/power ratio and its high reliability during extreme operation.

As a main speaker system, it is designed for medium range high precision indoor or outdoor applications. Used alone, the MX4 offers high intelligibility and clarity in vocal bandwidths, which is useful in theatres, house of worship or sporting venues. For music applications in full range mode, the use of a dedicated processor is mandatory in order to enhance the musical reproduction. Combined with subwoofers, the MX4N can be used to build a compact front of house system, well suited to clubs, cabarets and mid size concert halls.

For low frequency reinforcement, the recommended subs are: SUB238S, TB115S, TB118S or TB215S.

The TB115S is equipped with a convection cooled neodymium 15" woofer and loaded with a low pass type double interactive chamber. This type of load enables a 3 dB gain on the bandwidth. The front chamber opens onto a K-horn™ design giving it an additional 3 dB gain. Associated with the convection cooled technology used with the neodymium woofer, thermal compression is reduced by nearly 2 dB. All these optimizations naturally lead to a very impressive dynamic and an important max SPL.

The TB115S subwoofer offers both high quality ergonomics and high level sonic performance. It provides an extremely advantageous power/size ratio. Its sound pressure capacity associated to its high quality sound reproduction generates a strong physical kick. The acoustic load provides excellent control over the diaphragm displacement increasing the mechanical reliability while diminishing the harmonic distortion.

The cabinet is specifically designed to enable one person to handle it on his own.

Taking advantage of its asymmetric shape, the TB115S is suitable for various configurations: network line, cardioid source, “sub arc” design, etc.

APG PROCESSING: ADAPTABILITY & VERSATILITY

Scientific research based on mathematical analysis of all the operating parameters of loudspeakers has provided guidance for the design of specific processors, which guarantee flawless system reliability.

In accordance to the expected level of control and reliability, APG produces two types of anaolog processors and one digital processor.

"SP" type Static ProcessorFor any passive speaker models of small and medium power (from MX1 to DX15) APG offers a first level of signal treatment with the "SP" type processors.

These models are designed for optimizing frequency response and providing sub and ultra-sonic protection. They include filters, crossovers, EQs for full range mode and stereo+ sub mono mode.

Static processors are usable for application where the system is not run at its maximum dynamic capacity.

"LP" type dynamic Loudspeaker ProcessorDynamic processors are required for high-power applications and live sound.

The active processors include a real time protection system where an analogue calculator permanently monitors the operational parameters of speakers. They provide loudspeaker protection by the simulation of destructive parameters (displacement of cone, temperature of coil, distortion (clip) of amplifiers) allowing the maximum power capacity of the speakers to be used, with the highest sonic performance and reliability.

They control all the active filtering, equalisation and topology-related settings of the system in 4 using mode: nearfield (stage monitoring) or far field (FOH) either with or without subwoofer.

It is possible to feed the sub channel from an external source provided by a mixing console or a digital processor. Additional EQ function allows the adjustment of clarity of the system.

A selection switch bank allows adapting the subwoofer to the main speakers. Functions allow the phase alignment and optimization of satellite/sub matching, taking the physical distance between speakers into consideration.

Uniline Aiming ToolThe UNILINE Aiming-Tool tm is dedicated to calculate and determine with precision all the mechanical adjustments of the UNILINE clusters according to the simulated acoustic characteristics. It is possible to edit the dimensions of the site, the geometry and inclination of the listening planes (floors and raked seating) and also the place of 3 virtual listening or measurement points (mix, mic1 and mic2)

The software enables to link the geometry and acoustics of the system and predict the angulations and mechanical variables (position of brackets on the bumper).

After editing the model of the site (a pit, raked seating, and two balconies is the maximum configuration that can be simulated), the software gives the visualization of the coverage predicted of a Uniline cluster and the visualization of the simulated acoustic levels per octave band.

Three curves at different frequencies are displayed simultaneously. The algorithms are based on real acoustic measurements to take into account the properties of the waveguides that are used.

The mechanical simulation enables to print out a full report, including a mechanical certification for the structure, together with the geometrical characteristics (position of different moving parts, rigging motor points, size of the system etc.)

Matrix Aiming ToolAPG Matrix Array Systems provide excellent ergonomics and a control of directivity, making it possible to vary both the length of throw and the horizontal dispersion. The purpose of the Matrix Aiming Tool calculator is to study and optimize the acoustic and mechanical aspects of the “cluster” configuration needed to provide the required coverage. It has been shown to halve installation time. The system engineer will be able to print out the configuration, showing the number of columns and lines of enclosures, the type of each enclosure, horizontal and vertical coupling angles etc, and will obtain a full report intended for the technical teams in charge of the rigging.

LSTECHNICAL SUPPORT & APG TOOLS

Whatever the performance specifications of a system, the final quality of an installation is mainly dependent on the acoustic source choice, its positioning and configuration as well as final tuning. APG offers a wide choice of measurement, calculation & prediction tools which allows sound professionals to reach an unprecedented level of results in terms of performances.

Bearing in mind the competence of their clients, APG R&D engineers permanently ensure an advanced level of technical support, so that any solutions are optimally adapted to all the technical and economic criteria of the projects.

APG has developed two different “project validation” tools to have your sound installation project validated by our R&D department. These tools are the “APG Project file” and “APG Project guide” software.

APG Project GuideThe APG Project Guide is a dedicated acoustic simulator.

It provides sound coverage evaluation of an APG based system in a given venue. It is usable as technical sales support as well as a design tool for a touring engineer. Since different types of venues are preloaded, only a restricted number of parameters must be entered in order to get the simulation going. Thanks to a tutorial approach and perfectly intuitive interface, simulating a system is only a matter of minutes, giving access to the requisite information including direct/total level, direct-to-reverb ratio and intelligibility.

EASE SimulationFor complete acoustic studies APG provides Speaker Data for EASE 3 and EASE 4.
