Almarin was established in 2004 in Barcelona with the objective of developing aids to navigation in Spain. Backed by its Portuguese partners, Almarin made in-roads into the Spanish market through innovation and excellence in customer service. Simultaneously, the dis-tribution of boatyard, port and harbour equipment was successfully developed.

Almarin designs and manufactures buoys and beacons and has a close collaboration with the leading manufac-turers of lights and other equipment with which its buoys and beacons are equipped. To strengthen its position, in 2007 Almarin acquired Balizamar, founded in 1981, and in 2008 Almarin became an industrial member of IALA.

Based in Barcelona and competitively manufacturing high quality products in Europe, the success of its na-vigation buoys encouraged the continual development and investment in the aids to navigation business area. This success led to the internationalization of its activity which began in 2012, initially focusing efforts in the La-tin American markets.

Today Almarin is a specialist manufacturer of aids to navigation with an increasingly global scope.

The GUIA range is the top, most ro-bust range of buoys manufactured by Almarin. They are designed to be used in marine navigation where na-tural conditions are demanding, the-re are high volumes of marine traffic or for situations that require using the most rugged product available.

The hull of the GUIA buoys is ma-nufactured using closed cell po-lyethylene foam core, which makes them virtually unsinkable. The core is covered by a polyurethane elasto-mer skin, which makes the assembly flexible and resistant to impacts they may receive from marine traffic. The load bearing structure, usually a tail, transmits the loads from the mooring to the hull and is manufac-tured from hot dipped galvanized steel.

The GUIA buoys are tailor-made, with a modular type build and avai-lable in multiple sizes and shapes.

ServiceAlmarin’s engineers will assist in selecting the correct product and mooring for each application. Almarin offers turnkey supply and installation if required

• Breaking areas

• Areas with very strong surf

Spar buoys are recommended for use where there are breaking seas. Manufactured in the shape of a tor-pedo and with reduced reserve buo-yancy, the buoy will submerge and sink under breaking conditions, offe-ring a low resistance and a minimum pull on the mooring.

The buoys are manufactured in glass reinforced polyester and their inter-nal chamber is partially filled with closed cell polyethylene foam to prevent it from sinking in case of a breached hull.

Almarin manufactures two models: 3m and 6m. The selected model will depend on the depth of the loca-tion where they are to be installed. In both cases a minimum depth is required (which will depend on the swell) to ensure the buoy does not touch the bottom. The installation of this type of buoy will require a de-tailed study of the depths where it is going to operate, since its reserve buoyancy is limited and the design of the mooring is critical for correct operation.

Service Recommendation of using the proper buoy for each appli-cation and mooring calculation

• Narrow channels, inside of ports

• Marking of dredging limits

• Exterior seawall limits

• Turning basins

• Seawalls or submerged obstacles

Articulated navigation buoys have a reduced swing radius. These buoys are recommended for applica-tions that require a highly accurate beacon placement and are typically found in narrow channels or inside the port itself, usually marking the limits of turning basins. These buoys are frequently used for marking the bases of quaysides or moles where there is an abrupt change in depth.

Each buoy is comprised of a tube that extends from a universal joint attached to the sinker to the lamp located at the top. A hull that is lo-cated a few metres below the surfa-ce applies a constant upward force, which maintains the assembly in a vertical position.

This type of buoy requires a detai-led study of the location and will not perform correctly in applications with strong currents or where the variation in water level is high (due to the tide or wave height). The stan-dard operating depth is between 12 and 60m.

The ALBA 2 buoy shown in the pictu-re below is located at the north en-trance to the Port of Barcelona.

The quality control of manufactured products is a priority at Almarin. The company strictly monitors the quality of its workmanship and raw materials used. Traceability is of the utmost importance so as to be able to assess performance throughout the life span of the product. Almarin is ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2004 certified, which shows its commitment to quality and the environment. Re-gular internal meetings monitor and standardize activities and promote a constant improvement of the company’s products.

Almarin has been a member of the International Association of Lighthouse Accessories (IALA) since 2008. IALA provides guidelines and recomenda-tions for the design of aids to navigation; Almarin incorporates the majority of the association’s re-commendations into the design of its products.

Almarin benefits from the Lindley Group’s know-how acquired over 85 years of experience manufacturing products for the marine and port environment. The added value is re-flected in the design and control of solutions for their customers.

The standard, batch produced pro-ducts are periodically reviewed for updating of designs and procedures.

Almarin is continuously analysing materials, ensuring that the most suitable materials are used for each application. Prior to adopting new designs or incorporating new mate-rials, the solutions are tested using a variety of alternative methods: phy-sical tests conducted at our installa-tions or in the marine environment and materials testing in external la-boratories.

All the new designs are created using three-dimensional tools and a sub-sequent structural analysis. The use of state of the art tools and the de-dication of qualified personnel in the Lindley Group are the foundation for high quality products manufactured by Almarin.
