With good knowledge of the industry we will be able to guide your business to the safe and correct choices in Work Wear and Personal Protective Equipment. We will strive to great lengths to help our customers’ achieve their HSE goals in a safe and conducive working environment. Our Asia Regional Head Office is based in Singapore and we have offices in Malaysia and India. We also have distributors in Myanmar, Brunei, & Indonesia. Our Asian stocking facilities for most of the goods are in Malaysia and Singapore. In addition, coveralls will also be stocked in India and Norway. Items which have the Norway flag denote that stocks are kept only in Norway. We will endeavour to keep adequate stocks in Malaysia and Singapore – however, in the event the stocks run out or a special request item, replenishments would be made available within a maximum period of six ( 6 ) weeks.

Nomex :

NOMEX is an aramid fiber manufactured by Dupont. For clothing applications, it is offered as NOMEX IIIA, a blend of 93% NOMEX, 5% KEVLAR, and 2% static dissipative fiber.

Applications

Petrochemicals, utilities, military, auto racing, volunteer and professional fire fighters.

Not Recommended For

Use around any molten substances, welding operations, or in a critical static control application.

Flame Resistance

NOMEX is inherently flame-resistant and this property cannot be degraded by laundering.

Colors

NOMEX is dyeable in a wide range of colors. Colorfastness to laundering varies depending on the shade. The fiber is also available in a solution dyed from where it is dyed in the fiber forming process. This limits color selection, but provides improved color fastness at increased cost.

Effect of Acids and Alkalis

NOMEX is unaffected by most acids, except for some strength loss after long exposure to hydrochloric, nitric, and sulfuric acid. It has generally good resistance to alkalis.

Head Protection

All head protection (helmets) must be CE marked, and can be considered either Complex or Intermediate under the PPE directive.

Safety helmets should satisfy certain performance/test requirements, including resistance to penetration, shock absorption, electrical insulation, resistance to flame and various working temperature.

A suitable safety helmet will mean one which is conforming to international/ national standards.

Noise Reduction Rating ( NRR )

How to Use the Noise Reduction Rating (NRR)

The NRR describes the average sound level reduction (attenuation) provided by a hearing protection device (HPD) in a laboratory test. Since the NRR is based on laboratory testing, it does not take into account the loss of protection that occurs when hearing protectors are not fit properly or when they are not worn for the entire time that the wearer is exposed to noise For most wearers, the NRR identified on the current EPA label (shown here) significantly overestimates the protection of the hearing protector in the workplace. This rating is based on an “experimenter fit” method of measuring HPD attenuation.

Using the EPA Noise Reduction Rating (Experimenter Fit)

The NRR on the EPA label shown to the right is based on the average amount of attenuation provided by an HPD when it is worn by 10 different people during a laboratory test. During this test, the person conducting the test fits the hearing protector on each person. This “experimenter fit” method results in ratings as high as 33 dB.

A New Rating: NRR (SF)

A new “subject fit” method of measuring HPD attenuation will be used in the future to calculate a different rating; the NRR (SF). The people (subjects) in this laboratory test fit their own protector according to the manufacturer’s instructions without the help of the person conducting the test. Compared to the NRR shown on the current EPA label, the NRR (SF) is usually a lower rating that may be closer to the performance of the hearing protector in the real world.

Estimating Noise Reduction for Individual Users

The labelled values of noise reduction are based on laboratory tests. It is not possible to use these data to reliably predict levels of protection achieved by a given individual in a particular environment. To ensure protection, those wearing hearing protectors for occupational exposures must be enrolled in a hearing conservation program. Non-occupational users should have a hearing evaluation by an audiologist, physician, or other qualified professional, on a regular basis.



Hearing Protection

Wear Hearing Protectors, especially if you must work in an excessively noisy environment. You should also wear them when using power tools, noisy yard equipment, or firearms, or riding a motorcycle or snowmobile. Hearing Protectors come in two forms: ear plugs and ear muffs.

TYPES OF EAR PROTECTION

Ear Plugs Can be mass-produced or individually moulded to fit the ear, and they can be reusable or disposable. On the positive side, they are simple to use, less expensive than muffs, and more comfortable in hot or damp work areas. On the negative side, they provide less protection than some muffs, and should not be used in areas having noise levels over 105 dB(A) (A-weighted decibels). They are not as visible as muffs and a supervisor cannot readily check to see if workers are wearing them. They must be properly inserted to provide adequate protection. Ear Muffs Can vary with respect to the material and depth of the dome, and the force of the headband. The deeper and heavier the dome, the greater the low-frequency attenuation provided by the protector. The headband must fit tightly enough to maintain a proper seal, yet not be too tight for comfort. On the positive side, ear muffs can usually provide greater protection than plugs, although this is not always true. They are easier to fit, generally more durable than plugs, and they have replaceable parts. On the negative side, they are more expensive, and often less comfortable than plugs, especially in hot work areas. In areas where noise levels are very high, muffs and plugs can be worn together to give better protection.

Eye and face protection requirements

• Safety glasses come with an assortment of unique features. Some for example include polycarbonate lenses or frames. Still others are fitted or incorporate a full shield for the face if the user is engaged in particularly hazardous work. Still others enable the user to wear their prescription lenses or incorporate prescription lenses into the safety lenses. These safety frames typically are far more durable than conventional prescription lenses.

• Most safety glasses must adhere to standards established by ANSI. These include passing a drop ball test, which includes dropping a ball directly onto the lenses from a designated height. There are actually various standards relevant to the type of safety glasses selected. Some are suitable for high impact activities while others suitable for lesser degrees of impact.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) provides guidelines for selecting the right type of lenses for safety glasses depending on the type of work you are involved in. Protective eyewear standards generally vary from employer to employer. While some work environments may require use of safety glasses still others may require a full shield. Your employer should investigate eye protection and face protection and provide all employees with adequate supplies and training regarding their use to meet with OSHA standards. Remember when it comes to eye safety prevention is key. You can easily protect your eyes from injury by following these steps: • Become aware of any dangers existing in your workplace. • Understand how to use safety glasses. • Decide on appropriate eye protection by consulting OSHA and your employer.

Types of eye and face protection

Welding shields •Constructed of vulcanized fiber or fiberglass and fitted with a filtered lens, welding shields protect eyes from burns caused by infrared or intense radiant light; they also protect both the eyes and face from flying sparks, metal spatter and slag chips produced during welding, brazing, soldering and cutting operations. OSHA requires filter lenses to have a shade number appropriate to protect against the specific hazards of the work being performed in order to protect against harmful light radiation.

Laser safety goggles •These specialty goggles protect against intense concentrations of light produced by lasers. The type of laser safety goggles an employer chooses will depend upon the equipment and operating conditions in the workplace.

Face shields •These transparent sheets of plastic extend from the eyebrows to below the chin and across the entire width of the employee's head. Some are polarized for glare protection. Face shields protect against nuisance dusts and potential splashes or sprays of hazardous liquids but will not provide adequate protection against impact hazards. Face shields used in combination with goggles or safety spectacles will provide additional protection against impact hazards.

Safety spectacles • These protective eyeglasses have safety frames constructed of metal or plastic and impact-resistant lenses. Side shields are available on some models.

Goggles •These are tight-fitting eye protection that completely cover the eyes, eye sockets and the facial area immediately surrounding the eyes and provide protection from impact, dust and splashes. Some goggles will fit over corrective lenses.

INTRODUCTION :

• Hands and fingers are subject to an army of hazards in the work environment. This fact sheet reviews the hazards associated with exposure to chemicals. Generally, exposure means contact through the skin or respiratory system, and ingestion. Research reveals that at least 80% of total body exposure to chemicals is to the hands.

• Once exposed, the person could be adversely like effected developing skin dermatitis or a burn from a corrosive chemical. Chemical can also be absorbed through the skin and into the body, causing a reaction that can lead to acute poisoning. General symptoms often associated with mild exposure to chemicals include headache, fatigue, dizziness, loss of appetite, stomach cramps, and diarrhea. Severe exposure to highly toxic compounds can lead to loss of coordination, seizures, and unconsciousness.

• When working with chemicals, no single glove will protect your hands completely. Gloves made from polymers and other materials have their strengths and weaknesses in terms of preventing resistance and physical properties like resistance to tearing and abrasion. Since no protect-all polymer exists, selecting the right glove for the job is imperative to your safety.

HAND PROTECTION

The type of chemical being used is the key factor for choosing of what material the glove should be

made. When possible use the farm chemical as the basis for the selection. With emulsifiable concentrates, volatile solvents (like toluene and xylene) and non-volatile solvents (like alkylated naphthalene and petroleum oil) correct glove selection is critical. Some of the more common glove materials are:

Butyl - a synthetic rubber with good resistance to weathering and a wide variety of chemicals.

Rubber - a highly flexible and conforming material made from a liquid tapped from rubber plants.

Neoprene - a synthetic rubber having chemical and wear-resistance properties superior to those of natural rubber.

Nitrile - a copolymer available in a wide range of acrylonitrile (propane nitrile) content; chemical resistance and stiffness increase with higher acrylonitrile content.

polyethylene - a fairly chemical-resistant material used as a freestanding film or a fabric coating.

polyvinyl alcohol - a water-soluble polymer that exhibits exceptional resistance to many organic solvents that rapidly permeate most rubbers.

polyvinyl chloride - a stiff polymer that is made softer and more suitable for protective clothing applications by the addition of plasticizers.

polyurethane - an abrasion-resistant rubber that is either coated into fabrics or formed into gloves or boots.

Viton® - a registered trademark of DuPont, it is a highly chemical-resistant but expensive synthetic elastomer.



Use the following steps in selecting the proper gloves when handling chemicals.

1. Refer to manufacturer’s Chemical Resistance Guide and Physical Performance Chart and select the glove type with the highest rating for the chemical and physical conditions. Also refer to the chemical label and the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), which may recommend a specific glove type. The information contained in these guides is advisory only. The purchaser must determine, by testing the product’s suitability for use with the specific chemical.

2. Select unsupported gloves for extra dexterity and sense of touch. An unlined glove is recommended to minimize exposure from contamination.

3. Select a palm finish to provide the grip needed for the job - smooth, dipped, or embossed type of palm coating / finishing.

4. Choose the glove length by the depth to which the arm will be immersed and by allowing for protection against chemical splash (see picture below).

5. Select thin-gauge gloves for jobs demanding sensitive touch and high flexibility. If greater protection or durability is wanted, choose a heavy-duty style.

6. Choose the glove size or internal material that will assure optimum wear, dexterity, working ease, comfort, and employe satisfaction.

Always inspect your gloves before using them. Of principal concern are cuts, tears and punctures.

Discoloration or stiffness may indicate non-uniformities in the rubber or plastic or chemical attack

resulting from previous use.

Visual inspection should be done every time you use the gloves to detect pinholes or other defects. One way to accomplish this is when they are still wet after having been washed, fill the glove with water and tightly roll the gauntlet toward the fingers and examine for leaks. Dispose of gloves that have been damaged or show signs of chemical degradation.

Proper handling of chemicals requires your wearing the gloves on the inside of your shirt sleeves. The exception is when you are working overhead and when your hands are in an upward position. In that case, put your shirt sleeves inside the gloves and turn up the cuff of the glove to catch any material that may run down your arm.

It is extremely important to avoid secondary exposure to the chemical after application. Before removing the gloves, thoroughly wash gloves with soap and water, or a detergent and water, and then rinse with a lot of running water. The gloves may now be removed. As the gloves dry in a decontaminated area, thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water. Make this a strict practice after every chemical application. Place dry gloves in a sealed plastic bag or other container and store away from possible contamination.

SCOPE

• This standard applies to all kinds of protective gloves in respect of physical and mechanical aggressions caused by abrasion, blade cut, puncture and tearing.

DEFINITION AND REQUIREMENTS

• Protection against mechanical hazards is expressed by a pictogram followed by four numbers (performance levels), each representing test performance against a specific hazard.

a. Resistance to abrasion Based on the number of cycles required to abrade through the sample glove. b. Blade cut resistance Based on the number of cycles required to cut through the sample at a constant speed. c. Tear resistance Based on the amount of force required to tear the sample. d. Puncture resistance Based on the amount of force required to pierce the sample with a standard-sized point.

Glove giving protection from thermal hazards

SCOPE

• This standard specifies thermal performance for protective gloves against heat and/or fire.


• The nature and degree of protection is shown by a pictogram followed by a series of six performance levels, relating to specific protective qualities.

• The ‘heat and flame’ pictogram is accompanied by a 6-digit number:

a. Resistance to flammability (performance level 0 - 4) Based on the length of time the material continues to burn and glow after the source of ignition is removed. The seams of the glove shall not come apart after an ignition time of 15 seconds.

b. Contact heat resistance (performance level 0 - 4) Based on the temperature range (100-500 °C) at which the user will feel no pain for at least 15 seconds. If an EN level 3 or higher is obtained, the product shall record at least EN level 3 in the flammability test. Otherwise, the maximum contact heat level shall be reported as level 2.

c. Convective heat resistance (performance level 0 - 4) Based on the length of time the glove is able to delay the transfer of heat from a flame. A level of performance shall only be mentioned if a performance level 3 or 4 is obtained in the flammability test.

d. Radiant heat resistance (performance level 0 - 4) Based on the length of time the glove is able to delay the transfer of heat when exposed to a radiant heat source. A performance level shall only be mentioned if a performance level 3 or 4 is obtained in the flammability test.

e. Resistance to small splashes of molten metal (performance level 0 - 4) The number of molten metal drops required to heat the glove sample to a given level. A performance level shall only be mentioned if a performance level 3 or 4 is obtained in the flammability test.

f. Resistance to large quantities of molten metal (performance level 0 - 4) The weight of molten metal required to cause smoothing or pin holing across a simulated skin placed directly behind the glove sample. The test is failed if metal droplets remain stuck to the glove material or if the specimen ignites. • Gloves must achieve at least performance level 1 for abrasion and tear.

SCOPE

• This standard applies to any gloves to protect the hands against convective and contact cold down to –50 °C.


• Protection against cold is expressed by a pictogram followed by a series of 3 performance levels, relating to specific protective qualities.

• The ‘cold hazard’ pictogram is accompanied by a 3-digit number :

a. Resistance to convective cold (performance level 0 - 4) Based on the thermal insulation properties of the glove which are obtained by measuring the transfer of cold via convection.

b. Resistance to contact cold (performance level 0 - 4) Based on the thermal resistance of the glove material when exposed to contact with a cold object.

c. Penetration by water (0 or 1) 0 = water penetration 1 = no water penetration.

All gloves must achieve at least performance level 1 for abrasion and tear.

Gloves giving protection from radioactive contamination and ionising radiation

SCOPE


• This standard applies to gloves to protect from ionising radiation and radioactive contamination

• The nature of protection is shown by a pictogram relating to the specific protective qualities.

• To protect from radioactive contamination, the glove has to be liquid proof and needs to pass the penetration test defined in EN 374.

• For gloves used in containment enclosures, the glove shall pass in addition a specific air pressure leak test.

• Materials may be modelled by their behaviour to ozone cracking. This test is optional and can be used as an aid to selecting gloves.

• To protect from ionising radiation, the glove has to contain a certain amount of lead or equivalent metal, quoted as lead equivalence. This lead equivalence must be marked on each glove.

SCOPE

DEFINITION

• This standard specifies the capability of gloves to protect the user against chemicals and/or microorganisms.

Penetration • Penetration is the movement of a chemical and/or micro-organism through porous materials, seams, pinholes

or other imperfections in a protective glove material at a non-molecular level. Permeation • The rubber and plastic films in gloves do not always act as barriers to liquids. Sometimes they can act as

sponges, soaking up the liquids and holding them against the skin. It is therefore necessary to measure breakthrough times, or the time taken for the hazardous liquid to come in contact with the skin.

REQUIREMENT

• The minimum liquid-proof section of the glove shall be at least equal to the minimum length of the gloves specified in EN 420.

• Penetration: A glove shall not leak when tested with an air and water leak test, and shall be tested and inspected in compliance with the acceptable quality level.

• This standard defines the general requirements for glove design and construction, innocuousness, comfort and efficiency, marking and information applicable to all protective gloves. This standard can also apply to arm guards.

• The key points are given below. Some gloves designed for very specialist applications, such as electrician’s or surgical gloves are, governed by other stringent job-specific standards (details are available on request).


General requirements for protective gloves

DEFINITION

• A glove is an item of personal protective equipment which protects the hand or any part of the hand from hazards. It may also cover part of the forearm and arm.

• A performance level is a number (between 0 and 4) which shows how a glove has performed in a specific test, and by which the results of that testing may be graded. Level 0 indicates that the glove is either untested or falls below the minimum performance level. A performance level X means that the test method is not suitable for the glove sample. Higher numbers indicate higher levels of performance.

REQUIREMENTS

Glove construction and design

• Gloves have to offer the greatest possible degree of protection in the foreseeable conditions of end use. • When seams are included, the strength of these seams should not reduce the overall performance of the glove.

Innocuousness

• The gloves themselves shouldn’t cause any harm to the user. • PH of the glove should be between 3.5 and 9.5. • Chromium (VI) content should be below detection (< 3 ppm). • Natural rubber gloves shall be tested on extractable proteins as per EN 455-3.

Cleaning instructions

• If care instructions are provided, the levels of performance should not be reduced after the maximum recommended number of cleaning cycles.

Electrostatic properties

• Anti-static gloves that are designed to reduce the risk of electrostatic discharges shall be tested as per EN 1149. • Obtained test values are to be reported on the instructions for use. • An electrostatic pictogram shall NOT be used.

Water vapour transmission and absorption

• If required, gloves shall allow water vapour transmission (5mg/cm2.h). • If gloves exclude water vapour transmission, it should be at least 8 mg/cm2 for 8 hours.

• Ordering the right size is the best way to assure that gloves are comfortable. One way to determine the size needed is to use a dressmaker’s cloth tape to measure around the hand. Measure above the thumb and below the fingers. The circumference of the hand (rounded to the nearest half inch; 1 inch = 2.54 cm) is numerically equal to the worker’s average glove size.

• Measuring the hands in this way will not account for all possible variations in hand size. Some workers, for example, may have long fingers, while others will have short fingers. Workers may find gloves that are one-half or even a full size larger or smaller than the measured hand size fit more comfortably.

Limitation of use: Filters for respiratory protection may be used everywhere, except for some inherent limitation e.g. containers or confined spaces. Principally, the following conditions must be known: • Type, property and composition of contaminant. • Oxygen content of the inhalation air must be sufficient [> 17 vol.-%] • Local or national restrictions or conditions should be observed. For all gases and vapors which may be present in combination with particles [dust, smokes, mist, spray] a combined filter [protection from gases and particles] must be used. The filter recommendations are based on pure substances. With mixtures, by products, or decomposition products, the impurities must be taken into account. For compounds with a boiling point below 65°C, AX Filters must be used. If the above list mentions a particle filter [e.g. A–P2] for a specific substance, particles are commonly found with the gas or vapor.
