Panzer Sicherungs-Kompanien and

Panzer-Abteilung 208 - I. / Panzer-Regiment FeldherrnhalleItaly 1943-44, Hungary-Slovakia-Moravia 1944-45

Three Panzer-Sicherungs-Kompanien (armoured security companies) were created from existing units during the summer of 1943 to be employed in case of Italy’s exit from the war. From September 1943, they were used to disarm the Italian Army and later to fight partisans in areas of northern Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. In the spring of 1944, the three companies became part of a newly created tank unit, Panzer-Abteilung 208 (armoured unit number 208). This unit remained in northern Italy until the end of the year, when it was re-equipped with new weapons and sent to the Hungarian front.

From late December 1944, the Abteilung was engaged in heavy defensive battles west of encircled Budapest, and in February 1945 it was involved in one of the last successful German offensives, conducted against the Gran Soviet bridgehead. In March 1945, the Abteilung was renamed I. Abteilung/Panzer-Regiment „Feldherrnhalle“ and fought its last battles in Hungary, Slovakia and Moravia as part of Panzer-Division „Feldherrnhalle“ 1.

On 232 pages the book recounts in detail the little-known history of these units, based on extensive archive research and contributions from former unit members. It contains 380 extremely rare photographs (most not published before), document reproductions, graphics and maps.

In addition, specific chapters also deal with related units: Panzer-Abteilung „Adria“, Panzer-Abteilung 212 in Italy, and Panzer-Einsatz-Kompanie „Ligurien“.

The Kübelwagen is a legend. While there have been several publications covering this vehicle over the decades, this present book is different as it offers a fresh look and a unique approach: For the first time, a large amount of high-quality wartime photographs were available for the detailed research of production batches and individual components. This has allowed the first-ever, reliable production batch identifier to be published. In addition, the photos displayed are mostly unpublished and come from private photo albums of soldiers that drove in and worked with the Kübelwagen on a daily basis, rather than being well-known propaganda shots. This book starts where other publications end, with the moment the first Kübelwagen was delivered to the Wehrmacht in mid-1940, and it takes the reader through the war years and to all frontlines.

In 256 pages this book is illustrated with 475 black and white photographs, 16 graphics and illustrations, 33 colour photographs and 12 colour profiles. Complete English text.

DRAGON WAGONTank Transporter M25Reflecting on the development and active wartime service of the M25 makes it clear why the Dragon Wagon finally made it into the hall of fame for trucks and why it became a legend: It was the first mass-produced (1,372 in armoured and unarmoured versions) tank transporter and the first vehicle in its class solely developed to haul tanks and to recover them from the battlefield. All other heavy trucks that also served this purpose were either built in smaller numbers, were technically not that well advanced, or were not so well suited for either task. The M25, either with the armoured M26 or unarmoured M26A1 tractor truck, was the first of its kind at a time when tank transport was still in its infancy, certainly compared to what eventuated after World War Two. While the wartime M25 can be considered the ancestor of all modern tank transporters, the post-war M26A1 with M15A1 semitrailer would set the ultimate standard. All post-war designs are principally based on technical parameters the Dragon Wagon set, and indeed the overall design is still valid today, if the development of engines is taken into consideration. This publication closes one of the major gaps in the Dragon Wagon’s bibliography: it is a technical high-quality photographical walk-around of excellently restored M26 tractor trucks and M15 / M15A1 semitrailers.

In diesem Buch werden die Aerosans der sowjetischen Streitkräfte sowie die Entwicklung und der Einsatz finnischer und deutscher Propellerschlitten bis zum Ende des 2. Weltkrieges dargestellt. Dies ist das vollständigste Werk zum Thema militärischer Aerosan, das jemals veröffentlicht wurde. The Aerosan (Russian for “Aero-Sleigh” or propeller-driven sleigh) was used by Russian forces during the First World War, the Civil War following the 1917 Russian Revolution, by the Red Army during the Russo-Finnish “Winter War” of 1939-40, and in the winter months of the Second World War on the Eastern Front. Aerosans proved particularly effective in the combination of snowbound northern climate and poor road infrastructure that afflicted the Soviet Union, where tracked as well as wheeled vehicles were frequently confined to roads by heavy snowfalls.This publication covers the Soviet development of the aerosans from the early 20th century to the end of World War 2. Added are chapters of aerosans in Finnish Army and German Wehrmacht service, both of Soviet design and domestic developments. In den 1970er Jahren begann man bei den US Streitkräften mit der Suche nach einem geeigneten Mehrfarb-Tarnanstrich um den bis dahin gebräuchlichen olivgrünen Einheitsfarbton zu ersetzen. Dieses Bestreben führte zu drei wesentlichen Erprobungsvorhaben, die zum großen Teil auch in Deutschland durchgeführt wurden: MASSTER, MERDC und DUALTEX. Diese drei Tarnanstriche prägten das Bild der Manöver in Zentraleuropa und besonders auch auf deutschen Straßen bis Ende der 1980er Jahre. Diese Publikation erzählt die Entstehungsgeschichte der drei Tarnschemen und zeigt diese anhand aussagekräftiger zeitgenössischer Fahrzeug-Farbfotos und computergenerierter Farbmuster ausführlich auf. Dies ist die erste umfassende und durchgehend bebilderte Abhandlung zu dieser Thematik.

In the 1970s the US Armed Forces intended to replace the olive drab mono-colour camouflage with a new modern multi-tone camouflage pattern. These efforts led to three major trials that were carried out to a great deal with US units on West German soil. The multi-tone camouflage schemes MASSTER, MERDC and DUALTEX would up till the late 1980s dominate the look of US Army vehicles on Central European roads. This publication tells the background story of these three camouflage pattern trials underlined by contemporary indicative colour photographs and modern computer-enhanced colour samples. This is the first comprehensive and fully illustrated documentation on the subject.

Seine Robustheit, die Zuverlässigkeit und seine überlegene Geländegängigkeit machten ihn in den ersten Kriegsjahren zur Legende. Diese Publikation zeichnet die Entwicklungsgeschichte, den Beschaffungshintergrund und die zahlreichen Varianten des Einheits-Diesels in vielen unveröffentlichten Fotos detailliert nach.

With the transition from the Reichswehr to the Wehrmacht intentions grew to create a standardised truck design for the army. The result was the ‘Light, Off-road-capable Standardised Truck 6x6 Type HWA 526 D’, or short ‘Einheits-Diesel’ that was built by almost all German truck manufacturers based on one unified design. In the early war years its robustness, reliability and superior off-road-capabilities made it a legend. This publication shows the development history, background of purchase as well as the numerous variants of the Einheits-Diesel in many hitherto unpublished photographs.

After a long planning phase the Canadian Army decided to purchase the German Leopard 1 main battle tank in the C1 version. From 1978 this new tank replaced the ageing Centurions and served in the sabre squadrons of the Canadian regiment deployed to West Germany up till the withdrawal of the Canadian units in 1993. This publication highlights the use of the C1 and its variants in the Germany of the Cold War with many exercise photographs and additional technical details of this unique Leopard version.

JACKAL High Mobility Weapons PlatformCOYOTE Tactical Support Vehicle - LightAufgrund ihres langen Einsatzes in Nordirland verfügte die British Army zwar über große Erfahrung in der Guerillakriegsführung, und besaß auch die für einen solchen Konflikt benötigte Fahrzeugausstattung, allerdings kam diese nun in Afghanistan unter extremen Witterungsbedingungen in einem riesigen Einsatzgebiet mit Wüsten und Gebirgsregionen zum Einsatz, wobei sie großer Hitze und Staubentwicklung ausgesetzt war. Ausrüstung und besonders Fahrzeuge waren hierfür einfach nicht entwickelt worden. Abhilfe schaffte eine komplett neue Fahrzeuggeneration, die für den Kampfeinsatz in Wüstenregionen maßgeschneidert wurde. Zu den modernsten Entwürfen gehören hierbei das geländegängige Feuerunterstützungsfahrzeug JACKAL 1/2/2A High Mobility Weapons Platform und das taktische Logistikfahrzeug COYOTE Tactical Support Vehicle – Light. Vorliegende Publikation stellt diese beiden Fahrzeugtypen erstmals in Wort und detailliert im Bild in Einsatz und Technik vor.

Due to its involvement in Northern Ireland, the British Army had a lot of practical experience in fighting a counterinsurgency, plus it owned the vehicles to do so. However, in Afghanistan these had to be used in deserts and mountainous terrain, under harsh environmental conditions with extreme heat and loads of dust. The kit, and especially the vehicles in service, was just not designed for this. The solution came in the form of a completely new generation of military vehicles, built to the most modern specifications and demands. Among these were the JACKAL 1/2/2A High Mobility Weapons Platforms procured to fulfil the requirement for an improved medium-mobility fire support vehicle, and the COYOTE Tactical Support Vehicle – Light acquired as a ‘mother ship’ tactical logistic vehicle. This publication provides an exclusive and detailed look onto the development, technology and use in a war zone of these two outstanding British vehicle designs.
