PINTA, the first Contemporary Latin American Art Fair to be held in New York City, ispoised to become the center of an annual celebration of Latin American creativity.Designed as a boutique fair that will include the participation of thirty-four carefullyselected art galleries, PINTA places an emphasis on contemporary art in the firstplace, and on modern art in the second. In this first edition, we will be accompaniedby prominent galleries from different countries, and by several based in the host city,New York, all of them with a strong interest in Latin American art.The aim of this Fair is to showcase the production of artworks by young creators fromLatin American countries and encourage American contemporary art galleries to incor-porate a Department of Latin American art, thus opening a new window for our artists.PINTA´S Program includes the creation of a Museum Acquisitions Fund that will con-tribute significant funding to support the purchase of works by Latin American artistsat the fair, thus involving the commitment of all the institutions that have an interestin the growth of art in the region. With a view to the future, the PINTA Research Fund has been created. The proceedsfrom its fund-raising activities will finance research projects by NYU (New YorkUniversity) Art students through scholarships granted to gifted students of LatinAmerican Art History in this academic institution. As part of the project, PINTA is hosting a prominent artist as special guest. On this occa-sion, the artist selected has beenWaltércio Caldas, a distinguished creator who lives andworks in Rio de Janeiro, and whose work is linked to the Neo-concrete movement. We hope that this promise will become a reality and that Pinta will entail new andwell-deserved opportunities for the artists from our region.

When two years ago, I learned that my friend Diego Costa Peuser had a dream – toorganize a contemporary Latin American art fair in New York – I innocently asked himwhy nothing similar had ever been implemented. His reply was swift and conclusive:“Because nobody has dared to do so yet”. We looked at each other for a second andthen considered doing it ourselves. Why not? PINTA had been born. There followed many months of hard work and dreams, of strategies and tactics, ofnegotiations, frustrations and joys, but also of a consistently unshakable energy andcommitment, until finally our project has become a reality. Many people are responsible for this to be happening, and I want not only to mentionthem but also to thank them very specially. I refer, mainly, to our friends and investorpartners Sergio Aisenberg, Juan Ball and Alfredo Ginocchio, who believed in this ideafrom the outset, and without whose financial support and unfailing enthusiasm thisendeavor would have been much more arduous. The incorporations of Mauro Herlitzka, Liana Pérez and Mariangela Capuzzo to theteam were invaluable at the time of adding the most talented and passionateexperts and surrounding the project with the best know-how available. They have, indeed, my deep gratitude.Lastly, my deepest appreciation goes to the brands that accompany us as sponsors inthis first edition, with all the risks that such an innovative endeavor implies for them.Their trust in us speaks eloquently of the value of PINTA as a project.PINTA is meant to be a long lasting project. We are already thinking about 2008 andabout what follows. The art of our region is being increasingly valued in the leadingworld markets, but it still has a long way to go in terms of visibility and positioning. There is a strong interest in art in Latin America, but there is also a growing numberof collectors in the expanding and thriving Hispanic community in the U.S.A., andamong the lovers of artistic expressions in general living in this country. This effort is aimed at all of them.

Since the Museum of Modern Art of New York presented in 1993 the exhibition enti-tled Latin American Artists of the Twentieth Century, there has been a growing inter-est in Latin American art in the academic and museum milieus, among art dealers andcollectors from this city and from others in the United States, among them Austin,Houston, Los Angeles and Miami. This fact, accompanied by what is also a rising phenomenon –the growth of the pop-ulation of Latino origin in this country–, has contributed to a greater knowledge ofLatin American art and to an expansion of the market for Latin American artworks, which in turn has incremented their participation in the global market. However, there is still a great deal to be learned about the Latin American culturalstructures and productions, both inside and outside this region. The whole system, comprised of artists based both in Latin America and in the UnitedStates, historical research, the critical corpus and the market has still much to offer, and finding the mechanisms that permit the materialization of this possibility is one ofour goals. For all the reasons mentioned, PINTA, New York’s Contemporary Latin American ArtFair, which is featuring its first edition, comes to fill a gap in the system, creating anindispensable space in this city.We know that art fairs and the art market are essential dissemination elements thatallow the public’s approach to a portion of artistic production, and that they motivatethe development of projects, and trigger other related activities. We are aware of what a fair can achieve, and for this reason we have implementedprograms that allow the disseminattion of art and the expansion of its market, in thiscase through the Pinta Acquisitions Program, whose aim is that different museumsmay acquire works for their collections, and also through the Pinta Research Fund forgifted students of Latin American Art History at New York University, which willenable future researchers, critics, journalists and curators to have access to scholar-ships allowing them to complete their studies.PINTA can and must motivate projects like the above-mentioned, challenge itself andimprove, which will further a more efficient integration of the Latin American artisticcontribution into the global art system.

In its first edition, PINTA, New York´s Contemporary Latin American Art Fair is pay-ing homage to the prestigious Brazilian creator, Waltércio Caldas, in recognition of hisvast and prolific trajectory, and above all, of his fundamental contribution to contem-porary art in Latin America. One of the main objectives of Caldas´s poetics is that his works become “texts”susceptible of being read and internalized, not merely contemplated. Rather thanworks to be “viewed”, his sculptures, objects and installations are expandedfields of eccentric geometry, which must be read as “music scores”, in the artist´sown words. For Waltércio, the infinite is not an empty space, a void, but rather aseries of connoted enclaves. There are many things unknown to us that exist, however, in the space around us, and although we cannot see or feel them, weknow they are there.Waltércio´s works transcend the universe of sensible appearances to warn us ofthe fact that there is a reality the eye fails to glimpse, but with which the mind isundoubtedly familiar. That is, his works fully transcend the boundaries of retinal“information” and appeal to knowledge. In his rich and multifaceted language, populated by notational elements, the color of the sculptures projects itself intothe territory of lightness and immateriality, refined and elegant, even moreungraspable and hidden from sight. Throughout his aesthetic and conceptual tra-jectory, Waltércio has called into question the notion and the boundaries of con-temporary art. In this respect, he proposes, through works such as TheloniousMonk (1998), Yellow (1998), Purple (1998), Skin for Ingres (1998), Half MirrorSharp (2007), Dream (2001), Object of the third type (1997), Pills (1981), The view(1996), the Venice series (1997), the varied series of Sculptures for all non-trans-parent materials (1985), the exploration of completely unusual “new materials”:white rabbit hair, rocks, xerographic prints coexisting with glass, acrylic, whiteCarrara marble, granite, bronze, copper, tightly spun woolen yarn, site specific

These latter monochromatic interplays can be seen in theinstallations titled Cadmio (1994) and AB (1999), as well as in the maquette-likesculptures like Rodchenko (2004), Giotto whispering (1998), Malva sombra azul(1987), outlining the passage from the specificity and visual impact of color to sculp-ture transformed into “idea”. This is obviously what Duchamp denominated “men-tioned colors”, that is, the difference between the pure materiality of a color andthe term that designates it. In Caldas´s works, the names of the colors are trans-formed into pure plastic shapes, and he has dedicated to this a whole series inwhich space is a suspended entity. Color, formerly emotional and unstable, is herea mental and Cartesian instrument, a flash of light affixed to the ´body´ of the sculp-ture. This implies trying not to see in order to “look” more in depth, within a systemof symbolic transfigurations to which the artist adds a very ostensible biting and

For, in fact, the obviousis sometimes deceptive”.
