Smart Solutions that Deliver ReliablePower Everyday --- Everywhere
Through our commitment to research anddevelopment, we continue to develop smartsolutions for safe, reliable, environmentally friendlyelectrical power delivery. This Specifiers Guidecontains all the information necessary to order whatyou need to complete your projects for 5 kV 35 kV
electrical distribution systems.
Let our Legacy Speak For Itself
From the Electric Century to theInformation Age
Even a visionary like Thomas A. Edison could nothave imagined the sophistication required of electricaltransmission and distribution equipment a little morethan a century after the invention of the incandescentelectric light bulb and the beginning of the ElectricCentury. Nor could he have anticipated all of thecomplex issues facing the electrical industry today.
Since its beginning, Cooper Power Systems hascontinued the commitment of its forebears toinnovation. Our research and development lab,the Thomas A. Edison Technical Center, embodiesEdisons philosophy of finding a better way withinnovative products that promote better power quality, reliability, safety, performance, and environmentalstewardship. Were proud to trace our heritage backto the industrys pioneer.
Thomas A. Edison, Incorporated, one of ThomasEdisons original companies founded in 1910 and withcorporate roots that go back to 1889, combined withMcGraw Electric Company in 1957 to form McGraw-Edison. In 1985, McGraw-Edison became part of
Cooper Power Systems. When RTE was acquired byCooper Industries in 1988 and merged with McGraw-Edison Power Systems, Cooper Power Systems wasformed. Coopers product offerings expanded againthrough the acquisition of Kearney in 1997. WhenRTE received a patent on the 15 kV loadbreak elbowdesign in 1966, its potential growth was probablyunrealized at the time. It is estimated that there arewell over 10,000,000 such elbows in service today. As a leading innovator in the industry, Cooper PowerSystems continues to introduce new products forunderground distribution systems. Other innovativecompanies have played key roles in the developmentof modern distribution systems, and they have
helped Cooper Power Systems become a leadingmanufacturer of electrical distribution equipment.

Part Number Selection Process for CableSensitive Products
The Cooper Power Systems 200 A and 600 A connectorproducts are designed for applications on XLPE, EPR or otherolid dielectric insulated underground electrical cables. Inrder to maintain a reliable termination, the cable accessories
must be sized correctly with the cable conductor size andable insulation diameter.
The cable conductor size is used to determine the compression
onnector used. Proper sizing is important to ensure reliableurrent transfer from the underground cable conductor tohe elbow connector. Conductor diameters are dependentn the conductor size in AWG or kcmil, and conductor type
stranded, compressed, compact or solid).
The cable insulation diameter (the diameter over the insulation)s critical because it is important to maintain a tightly sealedt between the cable insulation and the elbow housing athe cable entrance. As the insulation thickness changes,o must the range of the cable accessory. Cable insulationiameter can be determined from the cable manufacturer'specification, or by referring to pages 8 (for cable made to the
AEIC Standard including the 0.030 inch tolerance) or 9 (forable made to the ICEA Standard) for minimum and maximum
iameters.
EXAMPLE:PROPER ELBOW PART NUMBER SELECTION
Select a Cooper Power Systems 15 kV 200 A LoadbreakElbow with optional integral jacket seal and test point for anAEIC standard tape-shielded 15 kV cable with 133% insu-lation and 1/0 compact stranded conductor with an outerjacket diameter of 1.07".
Step 1 Base Part Number Selection
Select base part number of LEJ215from page 11 for 15 kVvoltage class. Note that on page 11 reference is also made totables CR1 and CC1.
Step 2 Determine Insulation Outside Diameter Range
Since cable is made to AEIC Standards, refer to page 8.133% 15 kV cable corresponds to 220 mil insulation wallthickness. The AEIC table gives a range of 0.805" to 0.865"for 1/0 compact 220 mil cable.
Step 3 Elbow Cable Range Selection
Refer to CR1 Table on page 13 and select a cable rangecode of "AB" with a range of 0.610" to 0.970" to cover0.805" to 0.865".
Step 4 Elbow Connector Selection
Refer to CC1 Table on page 13 and select a conductorcode of "05" which applies to the specified 1/0 compactconductor.
Step 5 Optional Test Point Selection
In accordance with note 1 on page 11, for an elbow with testpoint, add a "T" after the cable range and conductor code.
Step 6 Optional Ground Strap
Tape-shielded cable requires a ground strap and bleeder wireto terminate. Add "GS" after test point option.
Step 7 Ordering

200 A Loadbreak Connectors
Our 200 A 15, 25, and 35 kV Loadbreak ElbowConnectors and Accessories are submersible, fully-hielded and insulated plug-in terminations, ideal foronnecting underground cable to transformers, witchgear, sectionalizing cabinets and junctions.
These connectors are molded using high-quality,peroxide-cured EPDM insulation for reliable fieldperformance.
5 kV and 25 kV loadbreak elbows are availablewith an integral jacket seal for use with concentric
eutral and other types of shielded cables.
All 200 A loadbreak connectors meet the electrical, mechanical, and dimensional requirements of IEEEStd 386standard and are designed to be fullynterchangeable with other major manufacturersurrently complying with IEEE Std 386standard.
25 kV POSI-BREAK Elbow and CapOur POSI-BREAK Elbow and Cap is an engineeredolution that increases strike distance and improveseliability. The added features solve problems, such as:
n Partial Vacuum Flashovers Under certain conditionsduring 25 kV switching, a partial vacuum can decreasethe dielectric strength of the air inside the elbow/bushing
or cap/bushing. This increases the possibility of aflashover from the elbow or caps probe along thebushing interface to the grounded collar on the matingbushing product. The POSI-BREAK design eliminatesthe possibility of partial vacuum flashovers duringswitching because of the increased strike distance.
n Contamination The field-proven interface sealprevents the ingress of moisture or contaminants. However, contamination introduced during installationor switching operations can reduce the strike distancealong the interface. The increased insulation of thePOSI-BREAK design counteracts the effect ofcontamination, increasing system reliability.
25 kV POSI-BREAK Elbow and CapSpecification Information
To capitalize on the benefits of thePOSI-BREAK Elbow and Cap, includethe following information for boththe 25 kV 200 A Loadbreak Elbowand Insulated Protective Cap in yourspecification:
n Both elbow and cap must fullycomply with IEEE Std 386standard.
n Strike distance from energizedcomponent to ground shall beat least 5.6" at 1/2" interfaceseparation.
n
Both elbow and cap shall have aninsulated probe and conductiveFaraday Cage for relief of electricalstress and prevention of partialdischarge.
nSemi-conductive insert shall becompletely surrounded with EPDMinsulating rubber.
35 kV Elbow and Accessories Specification Information
To capitalize on the benefits of our 35 kV Large Interface Elbow include thefollowing information in your specification:
n The 200 A Elbows and Accessories shall be 21.1 kV/36.6 kV three-phaserated, meeting the requirements of IEEE Std 386standard interfaceNo. 1A (large 35 kV class interface).
35 kV Large Interface Elbow Bushing System*Our 35 kV 200 A Large Interface Elbow Bushing System is areliable, field proven design. This system has over 25 years of field
experience while being used on large 35 kV distribution systems. Featuresof the Large Interface System include:
n Increased strike distance to provide greater reliability and overallperformance.
n Reliableloadbreak switching and fault closure capability.n Full line of large interface accessory products.

Our 600/900 A Deadbreak Connector Systems are designedo fill the demand for a deadfront underground installation 600/900 A main and lateral feeders. They provide aompletely shielded, deadfront, fully submersible cableonnection for high-voltage apparatus such as transformers, witchgear, large motors, etc., and can also be used to makeplices, junctions, taps and deadends for main underground, stribution feeders. They provide the same high degree ofperating flexibility and reliability as our 200 A products. Allomponents fit together easily and assembly variations are
vailable.hese connector systems are designed for installation onarious types of cables. The entire system can be applied tooncentric neutral cable, and with our CS & SA Series Shielddapter Kits to almost any other type of cable.
ll of our Deadbreak Connectors meet the electrical, mechanical and dimensional requirements of IEEE Std 386tandard and are designed to be fully interchangeable withhose currently available from other major manufacturers.
00 A RATING
900 A continuous rating can be achieved with BOL-T,T-TAP and T-OP II Systems when used with a coppertopompression connector and all copper mating componentscluding apparatus bushing or junction. (See note 1 on page
9 for details when selecting a system.)
OL-T Connector System
Our BOL-T Deadbreak Connector System is designed forse on applications where the terminations would not beperated after installation, would not need a 200 A interface
or grounding or arrester provisions, and would not requirerect conductor testing or the use of a hotstick. It is a boltedesign that is interchangeable with other manufacturersolted 600/900 A systems and requires no special tools forstallation.
T-TAP Connector System
Our BT-TAP Deadbreak Connector System includes a 200 Aoadbreak tap instead of the standard insulated plug. The
ther components of BT-TAP are the same as BOL-T, makingan ideal option to retrofit existing BOL-T (or other bolted
ystems that use unthreaded compression connectors)ystems with a 200 A loadbreak tap for testing, grounding, orvervoltage protection.
-OP II Connector System
Our T-OP II Deadbreak Connectorystem also has a 200 A loadbreak tap andas all the advantages of the BT-TAPystem. In addition, the T-OP II isngle-person hotstick operable, makingideal for terminations that may
equire moving or sectionalizing tochieve a visible open or visible
round. The T-OP II design offersdded reliability (900 A rated allopper alloy current path and copperop connector) and has severalssembly/operating advantages.
USH-OP Connector System
Our PUSH-OP Deadbreak Connectorystem is essentially a T-OP IIermination with a non-bolted designor use on any deadfront apparatuswhere the terminations may be
perated frequently. The PUSH-OP00 A deadbreak probe and finger
contact design eliminates cross-threading and normal threadwear during repeated sectionalizing operations. It is the onlyavailable system that allows operators to move the terminatorwhile it is fully grounded. The PUSH-OP System providesstainless steel bracketry and a mechanical lever for the fastestand easiest one-person hotstick operation possible. ThePUSH-OP System requires special apparatus bushings, whichmakes it suitable for new installations only.
U-OP Connector System
Our U-OP Deadbreak Connector System is used with T-OP IIand designed to provide a visible break and visible groundwithout having to move large 600 A cable. The U-OP Systemrequires special apparatus bracketry, which makes it suitablefor new installations only.

BOL-T Connector SystemThe BOL-T Deadbreak Connector System is designed forse on applications that will not be operated, do not need
grounding or arrester provisions, and do not require directconductor testing or the use of a hotstick. It is a bolted designhat is interchangeable with other manufacturers bolted 600 Aystems that require no special tools for installation.
The capacitive test point on the insulating plug provides ameans of confirming an energized circuit without disturbinghe bolted connection. In addition to the capacitive test pointeature on the insulating plug, we offer a capacitive test pointon the T-Body. This allows the use of our Type TPR SeriesFaulted Circuit Indicators, and provides a means of confirm-ng that a circuit is energized when used with high impedanceoltage sensing devices designed for test points.
Refer to Figure 1 for BOL-T Connector Kit Components.
nstallation of BOL-T on a 600/900 A BushingThe BOL-T Connector is installed on any 600/900 A bushingsing a standard 1-inch socket. No special tools are required.
BT-TAP Connector SystemThe BT-TAP Deadbreak Connector System is designed foruse on applications where a 200 A interface is required fortesting, grounding, or overvoltage protection. It is primarilyused in retrofit applications of existing 600 A or 900 A BOL-Tinstallations (or other bolted systems that use unthreadedcompression connectors).
The BT-TAP Connector System uses the standard unthreadedcompression connector, which makes it ideal for retrofittingexisting BOL-T installations into a system with a 200 A tap.
The BT-TAP provides the following features:
n Visible ground and visible breakn 200 A Interface for:
addition of our M.O.V.E. Arresters for overvoltageprotection
addition of our Grounding Elbows access for direct conductor phasing and testing hipot testing of switch or cables
Refer to Figure 2 for BT-TAP Connector Kit Components.
Installation of BT-TAP on a 600 A BushingThe BT-TAP Connector is installed on an apparatus bushingusing a 600 A Torque Tool.BOL-T Specification Information

T-OP II Connector SystemThe T-OP II Deadbreak Connector System is designed for useon applications where a 200 A interface is required for testing, grounding, or overvoltage protection. It is single person hotstickoperable and is ideal for terminations that may require moving toachieve a visible open or visible ground. One person can movethe T-OP II Deadbreak Terminator from the apparatus bushingto a standoff bushing using a hotstick and Operating Test andTorque Tool (OTTQ6_5).
The T-OP II Connector System uses a threaded coppertop (bi-metal) compression connector for a threaded connection. It alsohas an alignment segment and internal rotating nut feature in theloadbreak reducing tap plug which, along with the extended lengthstud, eliminates cross threading and ensures proper torque.
The T-OP II system provides the following features:n Single person hotstick operablenMechanical assistn Copper alloy current path and copper-top connectorn 900 A continuous current ratingn Visible ground and visible breakn 200 A Interface for:
addition of our M.O.V.E Arresters for overvoltageprotection
addition of our Grounding Elbowsaccess for direct conductor phasing and testinghipot testing of switch or cables
Refer to Figure 3 for T-OP II Connector Kit Components.
Installation of T-OP II on a 600/900 A BushingThe T-OP II Connector is installed on an apparatus bushingusing a T-Wrench and a 600 A Torque Tool.
U-OP Connector SystemThe U-OP Connector System is used to provide a visible and visible ground on 600 A distribution systems without havto move the heavy cable. The U-OP Connector is a deadbrsystem rated for operation on 15 or 25 kV class equipmenincluding transformers, switches, switchgear, and other apratus.
Under normal operating conditions, the current path is throthe apparatus bushing, through the U-connector, through
two-way 600 A deadbreak junction, and through a T-OP II 6A Connector (sold separately) to the underground cable. Wisolating underground cable, a grounded standoff bushing cbe put in the parking stand (with the system de-energized)U-connector can then be removed, rotated 90, and re-insover the apparatus bushing and grounded standoff bushingground the apparatus bushing.
A grounding elbow can be installed on the 200 A interfaceof the T-OP II Connector to ground the cable. A 600 A U-OProtective Cap can then be put on the upper bushing of tdeadbreak junction to insulate that bushing. Since all bushinof the connector system are then insulated or grounded, aif the cable is grounded on the other end, it is safe to perfowork on the underground cable. See Figure 4 for a typicaU-OP Connector configuration.

Our Metal Oxide Varistor Elbow (M.O.V.E.) and Parking Stand Arresters are usedn pad-mounted transformer and entry cabinets, vaults, switching enclosures andther installations to provide shielded deadfront arrester protection. These arrestersre designed for use with 200 A loadbreak interfaces to limit overvoltages tocceptable levels, protect equipment and extend cable life.
The gapped structure of our VariGAP M.O.V.E. Arrester provides excellentemporary overvoltage (TOV) characteristics while the MOV disks offer rapid front-f-wave response with virtually no power follow current. Extensive laboratory testingnd over 15 years of field history have proven the hybrid VariGAP design offers the
ollowing advantages over standard ungapped MOV arresters:Lower Discharge Voltage Characteristics
Increased Thermal Capacity
Improved Front-of-Wave Response
Higher Temporary Overvoltage Capability
